Superman's Guy Gardner

One of the more intriguing characters in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film is the brash yet endearing Green Lantern known as Guy Gardner, and bringing that beloved character to life is the ever-talented Nathan Fillion. Fans have seen several glimpses of Gardner in the trailers, and Fillion’s take on the character is catching their attention. That will likely only increase when the film actually releases, but you might be surprised who inspired his take on the character. Fillion was speaking with the DC Studios Showcase Official Podcast, and that’s when he revealed which sitcom legend inspired his version of Guy.

Hosts Frankey Smith, Tyler Coates, and Coy Jandreau had a few questions for Fillion regarding bringing Guy Gardner to the big screen, including how he blends Gardner’s braggadocios nature with his more endearing qualities. That’s when Fillion revealed that he looked to Golden Girls’ Sophia for inspiration, who was brought to life by the amazing Estelle Getty.

“You know, I took my inspiration from the oldest cast member from Golden Girls, where she just, whatever she wanted to say, just there was no filter. She just said, Thank you, Estelle Getty. Thank you. Just whatever it is, there it is, he’s just gonna say it. Part of his origin was he was at one point hit by a bus, and was in a coma. So I just say that’s the thing that flipped the switch. That’s the thing that caused a little bit of brain damage. Now he’s just…off a little bit,” Fillion said.

The crew also asked about Gardner’s trademark bowl haircut, which Fillion was intent on bringing to the big screen. “There was some talk about different hairstyles. There was some talk about some different types of things we were going to go. I was team bowl cut the whole way. It’s canon. It’s set. I said, If we don’t do a bowl cut, we’re going to hear about it,” Fillion said.

Fillion was also asked if there were higher stakes in playing a character that is’t as mainstream, and Fillion actually felt the opposite. “I think if anything else there’s a freedom. I think the real stakes and that kind of stress would probably be on David. You know, you’re playing Superman. Good luck. People have a lot of expectations. But if you’re coming in with something that’s a little fresh for some people, it’s all on you. Like, hey, I get to decide how this is gonna go,” Fillion said.

Smith then asked a question all of us Lantern fans want to know, and that’s about the constructs Guy will use in the film. When Smith asked if we’ll see any constructs in the film, Fillion said, “Absolutely”, but when asked what they are like, Fillion had to tease things a bit more vaguely. “Exactly what you’d expect from Guy Gardner. I mean, if you said, ‘Hey, there’s an emergency. We need a Green Lantern,’ Guy Gardner is the guy you hope you don’t get,” Fillion said. “There’s thousands of them out there, all over the universe. ‘God, please not Guy. Not Guy.’ You got Guy. ‘Damn it! Damn it!'”

Superman soars into theaters on July 11th.

Superman being arrested in Superman

Superman director James Gunn has debunked recent rumors concerning the film’s run time. On the social media platform Threads, a fan asked the filmmaker about headlines claiming Superman is 122 minutes long (2 hours, 2 minutes). Gunn cleared things up by confirming that is not the movie’s official running time. According to him, there are still a handful of VFX shots to finish before the final picture is locked and ready to go. The plan is for that work to be completed this coming weekend, meaning Superman will be ready to hit the big screen in the near future.

“That is not correct,” Gunn said when asked about the Superman run time. “It’s almost totally locked – meaning we’re just finishing a couple VFX shots over the weekend – but that’s not the running time.”

Speculation about Superman‘s run time started to spread earlier this week when it was claimed that international distributors had learned the information ahead of tickets going on sale soon. The reported run time was noteworthy because it would have made Gunn’s reboot the shortest Superman film in nearly 40 years. Superman IV: The Quest for Peace is only 90 minutes long.

As the first theatrical release in the DC Universe franchise, Warner Bros. has been busy giving Superman a major marketing push. The studio recently unveiled a new official trailer that established some of the film’s themes and teased some hard-hitting action sequences. Looking to build off spring box office hits such as A Minecraft Movie and Sinners, WB is very excited for Superman, which is arguably the studio’s most important release this year.

The rumored Superman run time raised some eyebrows considering all that’s on the film’s plate. Serving as the introduction to the DC Universe for most of the moviegoing audience (save for the people who watched Creature Commandos on Max), Superman will laying a lot of foundation for the shared universe moving forward. The titular Kryptonian is just one superhero appearing in the film, and some of those other characters are set to return in future DC Universe projects (see: the Peacemaker Season 2 trailer). A lot can be accomplished in two hours (which is how long it took Gunn to make viewers fall in love with the Guardians of the Galaxy), but an argument can be made Superman needs a little more breathing room in order to properly establish all of its key elements. It’ll be interesting to see what the final run time actually is.

It would be surprising if Superman is shorter than what the rumors indicated. Even though Gunn is eschewing the classic Superman origin story and just jumping right into the action, the film still has to acclimate viewers to a whole new universe and different iterations of famous characters. Running under two hours would run the risk of short changing things, though a protracted run time presents its own hurdles. Ultimately, what it boils down to is how well Superman is paced and constructed on a storytelling level. Gunn has knocked multiple comic book adaptations out of the park in his career, so Superman will hopefully be a continuation of that trend.

Whether it’s horn-rimmed glasses worn by George Reeves’ Clark Kent in The Adventures of Superman or the bumbling, mild-mannered disguise adopted by Christopher Reeve in Superman: The Movie, the Man of Steel knows what it takes to protect a secret identity. But in James Gunn’s Superman movie starring David Corenswet in the title role, there’s another character with a well-guarded mystery identity: the Hammer of Boravia, one of several villains making their way into the DC Universe.

The gold-armored avenger of Boravia has been identified as such in everything from the film’s toyline to a Daily Planet newspaper photographed on the set, but curiously, there’s no word on who’s portraying the hi-tech terrorist seen trading blows with Superman in the trailers. The same goes for Ultraman, yet another masked mystery man clad in an identity-concealing costume who appears to be in league with General Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo) and Superman’s nemesis Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult).

And like the Hammer of Boravia, the identity of the actor playing Ultraman is being kept under wraps. But a Funko figure appears to reveal a SPOILER: the Hammer of Boravia and Ultraman are one and the same.

A new look at the second wave of Superman Funko POP! figure series — exclusively revealed by ComicBook — shows the Hammer of Boravia and a limited-edition chase variant Ultraman displaying the number 583, suggesting that the two figures are the same character, just in different suits. (Meanwhile, Mr. Terrific is 584, and the Guy Gardner Green Lantern is 585.)

The latest Superman trailer hinted that the Hammer of Boravia is a precursor to Ultraman: he can be seen unleashing what Daily Planet reporter Clark Kent described as an “ocular laser strike” on the LordTech building, which resembles Superman’s heat vision. In the comics, Ultraman is, essentially, an evil Superman with similar powers, including his red-eyed heat vision. Ultraman can also be seen accompanying Luthor and another powered meta-human, Angela Spica/the Engineer (María Gabriela de Faría), as they invade Kal-El’s Fortress of Solitude in the arctic, implying that Luthor is also behind the so-called Hammer of Boravia.

No surprise there: Gunn has already confirmed that Superman’s archoe is the movie’s main villain. “The primary protagonist of Superman is, shockingly, Superman. The main villain of Superman is, shockingly, Lex Luthor,” the writer-director shared on Threads in response to rumors that Ultraman is Superman’s evil clone.

Superman — starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Nathan Fillion as the Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, with Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, María Gabriela de Faría, Wendell Pierce, Alan Tudyk, Neva Howell, Pruitt Taylor Vince, and Frank Grillo — is only in theaters July 11.

We may have just gotten a big hint about Metamorpho’s appearance and powers in the upcoming Superman movie thanks to a new toy available for pre-order, but this is far from a cute doll. The shapeshifter is depicted with all four limbs mismatched in terms of size, color, and texture. His left hand has been replaced altogether with a hammer head, but that’s not the part that has fans the most distressed. Here, Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan) wears a pair of gray gym shorts, but nothing else. Fans have to wonder what is being covered up here, and how the garment survives his constant changing. Still, many commented their plans to pre-order the figure from McFarlane Toys.

McFarlane’s new Metamorpho figure is reasonably accurate to comic book depictions of the character — both classic and recent. It shows the four quadrants of his body shifted into four different compositions, as his powers allow him to transmute himself into different elements at will. However, the unwieldy shape of the character is different from his usual proportions, at least in his resting state between attacks and movements. Many wondered if the movie would depict Metamorpho as having less control, or simply make him larger at all times.

On top of that, the loose-fitting shorts are throwing some fans off. Metamorpho is most often depicted wearing nothing but briefs and a belt with his emblem on it. Even this is generally regarded as a display of his own creation. In some ways, shorts are more modest and look more natural in a modern setting, but in others they draw more attention and raise more questions.

Either way, we don’t know for sure whether this is what Metamorpho will look like in the new Superman movie. we’ve seen glimpses of him in the trailers where his proportions are smaller and more human-like, with a defined neck and shoulders. It may be that he only swells up like this on occasion when it will help him in a fight, or perhaps he doesn’t have as much control as in other stories. His inclusion in this movie is one of the big question marks hanging over the story and the future of the DCU.

Metamorpho will be played by Carrigan, and is expected to have a role in the DCU beyond this first movie. He is typically depicted as a hero in the comics — if a tragic one — though he seems to have a more ambiguous role in this movie. Hopefully the story will give him time and space to master his powers and rise to the ranks of the DCU’s superheroes.

Superman hits theaters on Friday, July 11th.

You’ll believe a man can lie. When David Corenswet answered the call to play the Man of Steel in James Gunn’s Superman reboot, he was skeptical that the co-chief of DC Studios — and the director of Marvel’s blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and 2021’s The Suicide Squad — was actually on the other end of the phone. The actor was in the middle of shooting Twisters and had screen tested for the Superman role in a process that came down to three contenders: Corenswet, Tom Brittney (Grantchester), and Nicholas Hoult (the X-Men movies), who would ultimately be cast as Superman’s nemesis, Lex Luthor.

“I was at home in Philadelphia, I was on a break from Twisters. It was the end of June, beginning of July of 2023. I was already on another phone call — it was exciting, full of intrigue and suspense — when I saw an unknown number pop up with a 310 area code,” Corenswet told Hoult in a joint interview for Wonderland Magazine. “And I said, very politely, ‘Uh, pardon me, I think I need to take this phone call.'”

NICHOLAS HOULT as Lex Luthor and DAVID CORENSWET as Superman in Warner Bros. Pictures’ “SUPERMAN,” a Warner Bros. Pictures release.

While Hoult admitted he will “never answer if there’s an unknown number,” Corenswet said he’s “since adopted that practice.”

“I hadn’t been explicitly warned, but we’d just screen-tested for Superman a couple of weeks earlier, so I was hoping I’d hear something one way or another,” Corenswet said.

“The context makes sense. As for why they didn’t cast me [as Superman] — I kept screening ‘no caller ID’ numbers and they didn’t leave a voicemail,” Hoult joked. (Hoult previously auditioned for The Batman role that ultimately went to Robert Pattinson, and had been cast in the Mission: Impossible villain role that went to Esai Morales when Hoult was forced to drop out.)

“I stepped away and answered the phone, and James Gunn said, ‘David, it’s James Gunn.’ And I said, ‘Can you prove that?’ Because I was in a suspicious mood,” Corenswet continued. When Hoult asked whether Corenswet really said that, he confirmed, “I really said that.”

“I never think I’m being pranked. But in the moment, it occurred to me, ‘How am I supposed to know?’” he explained. “People knew I was screen-testing for Superman, so somebody could’ve pulled [a prank].”

Corenswet shared the news with his inner circle — his mother, aunt, uncle, sister, and his wife — before Gunn confirmed the casting news on June 27, 2023. Gunn also announced that Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) came out of the screen tests with the Lois Lane role over Phoebe Dynevor (Bridgerton) and Emma Mackey (Barbie).

“The last person I got to tell, a few hours after it was available publicly, was my high school theater teacher, who was the one to convince me to audition for The Juilliard School and is a very close friend,” Corenswet recalled. “He texted back, ‘I’m doing a radio show for this theater thing I’m involved with in Philly. I’ll call you back.’ So, when he was done, I called him and asked, ‘How’s it going?’ He replied, ‘Oh, it’s great! I was talking about this and that David, you know how it is…’ I then said, ‘Oh, did you tell them what it feels like to have your high school theater student playing the next Superman?’”

“And the phone just went dead. Then he exclaimed—I don’t really remember what he said, but it was a really great phone call,” Corenswet said.

As for his own reaction to being cast as Superman, Corenswet said that “confidence was definitely not the feeling. I’d compare it to an astronaut who’s been one for a while but finally gets the call they’re going to the moon. You’re thinking, ‘Well, I’ve still got to go to the bloody moon now!’ So, there’s excitement.”

“Actually, my first feeling … is usually relief when I get a part,” the Superman actor added. “It’s rarely excitement or pride, just relief because I know what I’m doing next.”

Superman — starring David Corenswet as Kal-El/Clark Kent/Superman alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, with Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, María Gabriela de Faría, Wendell Pierce, Alan Tudyk, Neva Howell, Pruitt Taylor Vince, and Frank Grillo — is only in theaters July 11.

Mr. Terrific is about to gain a whole new audience thanks to Superman. The film is part of James Gunn’s new DC Universe and is another attempt to find a winning formula for the Man of Steel on the big screen. However, Superman isn’t the only DC hero to appear in the film. Joining Superman are Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, Metamorpho, and Mr. Terrific. This won’t be the first time we’ve seen Mr. Terrific in live action, with the hero also appearing in Arrow. The general audience may not be familiar with Mr. Terrific, so DC is providing more context with a Year One comic.

DC released preview pages for Mr. Terrific: Year One #1 by Al Letson, Valentine De Landro, and Marissa Louise. The comic will jump between the past and present, showing how the death of Michael Holt’s wife and unborn son led him down the path to becoming Mr. Terrific, one of the smartest characters in the DC Universe.

The preview begins with Mr. Terrific filling the reader in on his history, from being a member of the JSA to leading his own superhero team in The Terrifics. A member of the Terrifics, Metamorpho, is also in Superman. While Mr. Terrific may not be a metahuman, he counts his mind as his superpower. We also travel back to the DC All In Special, where Darkseid attacked the new Justice League Watchtower. Darkseid’s death opened a dangerous interdimensional rift that Mr. Terrific has made his job to investigate.

Our final pages travel back in time to the early days of Mr. Terrific, where he’s woken up from his sleep by someone close to him. Mr. Terrific has been holed up in his apartment since his wife and unborn son were killed. After their deaths, Mr. Terrific sold his company to Athena Prescott, an inventor, entrepreneur, and CEO of Prescott Industries. Having Mr. Terrific: Year One jump back and forth from the present to the past is an excellent way to craft the story, and allows readers to see how Mr. Terrific’s choices in the past are affecting him to this day.

Edi Gathegi portrays Mr. Terrific in Superman. He’s a gold medal-winning Olympic decathlete who also has multiple PhDs. He’s part of a long line of legacy heroes, with the original Mr. Terrific using the catchphrase “Fair Play,” which is something that appealed to Michael Holt. Along with his depiction in Arrow, played by Echo Kellum, Mr. Terrific has also appeared in the Justice League animated series

Mr. Terrific celebrated an anniversary in April, with Superman director James Gunn sharing a behind-the-scenes photo of Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific. “Happy Anniversary to Mr. Terrific, who has long been one of my favorite characters,” Gunn wrote in his Instagram post. “It’s been a joy bringing him to the big screen for the first time with my pal Edi Gathegi.”

“THE SECRET ORIGIN OF SUMMER’S BREAKOUT SUPERHERO!” a description of Mr. Terrific: Year One #1 reads. “Brilliant young inventor Michael Holt’s life was destined for greatness… yet everything screeched to a halt when his wife Paula and unborn son were killed in a car accident. The Holts once shared ambitious dreams of using their technology to help others, but after the tragedy, Michael retreats from society and sells Holt Industries to mysterious and craven tech billionaire Athena Prescott. The domino effect of Michael’s actions set off an explosive chain of events that take a not-so-ordinary man from the depths of despair to the heights of heroism! Meanwhile, in the present day, Mr. Terrific continues his research into what became of Darkseid after the events of the DC All-In Special…and comes to realize that his past and the present might be inextricably linked…”

Mr. Terrific: Year One #1 goes on sale Wednesday, May 28th. Let us know your thoughts on the comic in the comments below!

David Corenswet as Superman in Superman

As the first theatrical release in the rebooted DC Universe franchise, James Gunn’s Superman has a lot on its plate. However, that doesn’t mean the film will have an epic run time. Based on the latest rumors, it sounds like fans won’t have to set too much time aside to watch the Man of Steel’s latest cinematic adventure. Per the X (formerly Twitter) account DC Film News, Superman has a run time of just 122 minutes. According to them, “international distributors have just received the update” ahead of tickets going on sale at some point in the near future.

If true, Superman would be the shortest Superman movie in decades. Some of the recent films starring the character have been quite lengthy. For example, Man of Steel ran for 143 minutes and the theatrical cut of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is 152 minutes. Superman Returns is 154 minutes. The last Superman film to be shorter than Gunn’s reboot was 1987’s Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. The theatrical cut of Justice League is 120 minutes, but that’s more of an ensemble film than a Superman movie.

Interestingly, Superman seems to be going in the opposite direction when compared to this summer’s other major comic book adaptation, The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Marvel’s blockbuster is reportedly the longest Fantastic Four movie to date, with a run time of 140 minutes. Superman is more in the ballpark of Thunderbolts*, which clocked in at 127 minutes. It’s also of similar length to Gunn’s first Guardians of the Galaxy, which was 121 minutes.

Superman is set to hit theaters in July, ushering in a new era for DC films. Warner Bros. is very excited about what Gunn accomplished, praising the director for “understanding the assignment.” The studio is now in the midst of a big marketing push for the film, releasing a new trailer, showcasing looks at toys, and unveiling news images that harken back to classic Superman films.

At first glance, it might be surprising to see Superman has a run time that’s the shortest the character has seen in years. As showcased in the trailers, audiences aren’t just meeting David Corenswet’s Superman for the first time in the film; there are several DC characters appearing in the movie, including multiple heroes who will have roles in future DC Universe projects. If Superman is “only” two hours, that means there might not be as much time to flesh out the film’s various elements. However, if Gunn could make audiences fall in love with a bunch of C-list Marvel characters in two hours, he shouldn’t have too much trouble getting viewers on board with Superman. If 122 minutes really is the run time, it means the movie should be well-paced, continuously moving forward with the right sense of momentum. Not every blockbuster needs to be two and a half (or three) hours — that can run the risk of overstaying your welcome.

A more efficient run time for Superman could also benefit the film at the box office. Coming in at around two hours means theaters will be able to book more showtimes each day, giving fans numerous opportunities to catch the film on the big screen. Warner Bros. obviously has a lot riding on Superman‘s success, so the studio needs it to be a hit. A shorter run time puts it in a better position to earn more money. That’s not to say this is the only reason Superman clocks in at two hours, but WB is probably very happy this is the case. There will be tough competition from Jurassic World Rebirth and The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July, meaning Superman needs every advantage it can get.

Peacemaker‘s acclaimed opening dance sequence is changing in its upcoming second season, with series creator James Gunn revealing that the distinctive intro will feature an unexpected new character in addition to the new cast. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly with Gunn and lead star John Cena, the co-head of DC Studios also revealed that the revamped sequence will receive its public debut at Comic-Con this July. Peacemaker‘s opening in the first season helped the series go viral after the first episode. Featuring the entire primary cast, the sequence was set to Wig Wam’s “Do Ya Wanna Taste It,” with actors performing a synchronized robotic dance, all while maintaining impeccably straight faces. This deadpan delivery, combined with the vibrant glam metal anthem, perfectly encapsulated Peacemaker‘s distinctive surreal humor, helping set the tone for the series.

“I’ll give you an exclusive: You get to see Eagly try to dance for the first time,” Gunn stated. “So that’s really something. He is not the best at it, but he tries to really join in the dance sequence at the end. He’s got a little pose this time.” In addition to Peacemaker’s sidekick pet, the new opening sequence will feature the entire new cast for Season 2, as Gunn felt forced to change the opening after the events of Season 1. “We killed everyone in the season, so we kind of had to [shoot a new opening]. Everyone died! Also, we have a lot of new cast members — Tim Meadows is Langston Fleury, Sol Rodriguez is Sasha Bordeaux, and Michael Rooker’s in the cast, Judomaster is a bigger character this time — so I knew that I needed to do a new dance.”

“This time around, everybody looked at it through a different lens, knowing how much the audience enjoyed the first one,” Cena added. “[We knew] this is going to be a cornerstone of the show, so let’s dive in. Everyone gave their best in season 1, but I just think people now know the importance of it, and hopefully it shines through in season 2.”

What to Expect When Peacemaker Season 2 Returns

The second season of Peacemaker will find its characters navigating a dramatically changed environment, as Gunn has confirmed a time jump of “a couple of years” will separate the new episodes from the first season’s finale. This multi-year gap is expected to have profoundly reshaped the lives of Christopher Smith nd the 11th Street Kids, particularly after Leota Adebayo’s (Danielle Brooks) public disclosure of Project Butterfly and Amanda Waller’s (Viola Davis) covert A.R.G.U.S. operations. The ramifications of this global exposé are already influencing the broader state of the new DC Universe, as seen in the animated series Creature Commandos, in which Waller struggles to keep her power. In Season 2 of Peacemaker, Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. will be the new head of A.R.G.U.S., pushing this narrative further.

As the father of Rick Flag Jr. (Joel Kinnaman), killed by Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad, Rick Flag Sr. will become a powerful adversary with both institutional backing and a deeply personal motivation to hunt down Smith in Season 2 of Peacemaker. This vendetta will inevitably endanger the entire returning team, including Vigilante (Freddie Stroma), Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), and John Economos (Steve Agee). The psychological burdens on Peacemaker are also set to continue, with Robert Patrick anticipated to reprise his role as Auggie Smith, Peacemaker’s deceased and virulently racist father.

Season 2 is also primed to introduce new characters. Rooker is slated to appear as Red St. Wild, a character Gunn has described as the “world’s foremost eagle hunter” and a specific antagonist for Eagly. The ensemble will further expand with Sol Rodríguez cast as Sasha Bordeaux and Tim Meadows as an A.R.G.U.S. agent. Finally, the Quantum Unfolding Chamber (QUC) technology, a plot device from the first season that will also feature in the Superman movie, is expected to be central to the new season’s narrative, possibly leading Peacemaker to a bizarre encounter with an alternate version of himself.

Peacemaker Season 2 is scheduled to premiere on Thursday, August 21st, on HBO Max.

John Cena in Peacemaker

James Gunn has confirmed a significant time jump will occur between the first and second seasons of the hit Max series Peacemaker, clarifying that the narrative will pick up “a couple of years” after the events of the initial season. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn underlined that creating a flexible timeframe echoes DC Studios’s broader strategy for building a cohesive and enduring cinematic universe, aiming to avoid the continuity pitfalls arising from rigidly defined timelines. This revelation comes as anticipation builds for the show’s return, which will see John Cena’s titular character officially integrated into the new DC Universe spearheaded by Gunn and Peter Safran. Peacemaker Season 2 is positioned as a key early installment in this revamped DCU, following the animated series Creature Commandos and Gunn’s own theatrical release, Superman, with those stories influencing Christopher Smith’s world.

“I see how difficult, after all my time at Marvel, it is to make things truly fit together, so it’s an unspecified amount of a couple of years,” Gunn stated. This intentionally inexact gap is a strategic choice informed by the director’s extensive experience with Marvel’s interconnected storytelling. Instead of locking DC into specific dates that could become narrative straitjackets down the line, an “unspecified amount of a couple of years” provides crucial breathing room. This approach allows future DCU projects to develop organically without tripping over rigidly established continuity points, a challenge that long-running universes often face. It grants writers and directors the freedom to tell the best stories without making every single timeline detail meticulously align across multiple productions, sidestepping potential plot holes.

The first season of Peacemaker concluded with Christopher Smith and the 11th Street Kids successfully thwarting the global threat posed by the Butterflies. However, Peacemaker himself was left to grapple with the haunting specter of his abusive father and his own violent past. Meanwhile, Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks) made the shocking decision to expose Project Butterfly and Amanda Waller’s (Viola Davis) A.R.G.U.S. operations to the world. This act, while righteous, shifted the forces of the DC Universe, as we began to see in Creature Commandos. A couple of years passing suggests significant changes for the characters, both in their personal lives and in how the world perceives them after Adebayo’s revelations.

Everything We Know About Peacemaker Season 2 in the New DCU

While the core narrative of Christopher Smith’s journey from the first season will carry over into Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe, certain elements, like the original Justice League cameo, will be adjusted to align with the fresh continuity. Gunn himself penned all eight episodes of the new season and directed three, including the premiere. The returning main cast includes Brooks as Leota Adebayo, Freddie Stroma as Vigilante, Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt, Steve Agee as John Economos, and Nhut Le as Judomaster. Robert Patrick is also set to reprise his role as Auggie Smith, Peacemaker’s deceased father, who is expected to appear in visions or flashbacks that continue to delve into his profound psychological impact on his son.

A formidable new adversary enters the fray in the form of Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr., the father of Rick Flag Jr. (Joel Kinnaman), whom Peacemaker killed during the events of The Suicide Squad. As the new head of A.R.G.U.S., Flag Sr. is positioned as a primary antagonist, leading an operation to capture Peacemaker. His character arc is woven through multiple DCU projects, beginning in the animated series Creature Commandos and continuing with an appearance in Superman before his significant role in Peacemaker. Adding another layer of threat, Michael Rooker joins the cast as Red St. Wild, described by Gunn as the world’s foremost eagle hunter and a specific nemesis for Peacemaker’s beloved animal sidekick, Eagly. The ensemble expands further with Sol Rodríguez portraying Sasha Bordeaux, Brey Noelle as the Batman villain White Rabbit, and veteran comedic actor Tim Meadows as A.R.G.U.S. agent Langston Fleury, alongside David Denman in an as-yet-undisclosed role.

Season 2 will find Peacemaker, post-Butterfly-threat, believing he deserves greater recognition and should be regarded as a true superhero. He even goes as far as interviewing for membership with a superhero group featured in Superman, only to be met with mockery, reinforcing his status as a punchline within the metahuman community. Furthermore, the Quantum Unfolding Chamber (QUC) technology, which played a part in Season 1 and will be further explored in Superman, is teased to be central to the storyline of Peacemaker Season 2, leading him to meet an alternate version of himself.

Peacemaker Season 2 premieres Thursday, August 21st, on HBO Max.

James Gunn’s Superman will open the curtain on the upcoming DCU this summer, but the Man of Steel’s new adventure also looks strikingly similar to the DCEU’s second chapter, Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Gunn’s Superman sees David Corenswet take up the mantle of the new cinematic Man of Tomorrow, with the movie’s first proper trailer presenting a glimpse into the conflict he will find himself in with Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor. Outside of these details, there is surprisingly little that is known about the story Superman will tell, which naturally leaves the door open to plenty of fan theorizing. What it has also left the door open to is comparisons with Henry Cavill’s preceding Superman, something that is only becoming more widespread by Superman’s trailer and the story it points to, the movie telling.

To be sure, Superman was always going to face comparisons to Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, and the overall DCEU – not only as the succeeding DC cinematic franchise, but also the circumstances of how the DCEU was ended in favor of the DCU’s beginning. Judging from Superman‘s trailer, it seems that will be an even bigger point of discussion for the new movie with how much it increasingly mirrors Batman v Superman.

Superman’s Plot Bears Some Shockingly Close Parallels to Batman v Superman’s Story

Nicholas Hoult and David Corenswet in Superman

In the newest trailer for James Gunn’s Superman, some key reveals about the movie’s story are made. These include David Corenswet’s Man of Steel incurring the wrath of the U.S. government by intervening in a military conflict on foreign soil, dealing with a significant public backlash in light of his actions, while Lex Luthor hatches a plot involving Kryptonian technology to bring down the Last Son of Krypton. Additionally, the movie’s version of Superman also exists in a world in which other metahuman heroes are present, with Kal-El also taking significant physical and emotional abuse, and finding himself facing an existential crisis of a world sharply divided on his heroic actions, with Superman forced to grapple with the consequences, good and bad, that come with even deeds as noble as his. On top of these challenges, Superman also finds himself battling a monstrous beast at one point in the film.

If that sounds surprisingly similar to Batman v Superman, it should, as Henry Cavill’s Superman faces all of the above in his movie. Indeed, the only major elements from Batman v Superman that seem to have no direct parallel in Superman are the absence of the Dark Knight and the general likelihood that Superman will not die in the movie. Nonetheless, if Superman‘s first teaser indicated some similarities between Zack Snyder and James Gunn’s Supermen, the movie’s first trailer comes incredibly close to positioning it as an unofficial remake of Batman v Superman, minus Batman. With the caveat that there’s surely more to Superman‘s overall storyline than what the marketing has thus far shown, Superman (2025) being so directly comparable to Batman v Superman could have an unintended side effect of making the latter’s shadow an even greater presence of all things DC than it already is.

Why Superman’s Similarities to Batman v Superman Could Compound WB & DC Studio’s Snyderverse Problem

It’s no secret that the DCU is kicking off with a burden most superhero franchises would rather not shoulder, that being its immediate predecessor (in this case, the DCEU) being unceremoniously cut off with a not-insignificant portion of its audience less-than-thrilled by that outcome. To be sure, the DCEU was subject to what can be called, in hindsight, a great deal of terrible mismanagement, nearly all of it stemming from Warner Bros. panicked reaction to the polarized response to Batman v Superman. That infamously led to Warner Bros. hurriedly reshooting and morphing Suicide Squad and Justice League to distance both films from the dark and gritty tone of Zack Snyder’s DCEU plans, only to see their efforts blow up in their faces with neither movie winning over detractors, and Justice League outright bombing in theaters.

The subsequent tale of the DCEU was a serious of back and forths between Zack Snyder’s Justice League finally being released after the grassroots #ReleaseTheSnyderCut campaign, Warner Bros. downplaying its release and saying no to release the Ayer cut of Suicide Squad and the explosion of #RestoreTheSnyderVerse calls (1.5 million in a day on Twitter on March 25, 2021), Warner Bros. having no alterative plan to Snyder’s leaving the DCEU without any visible road map, and eventually culminating in Henry Cavill’s Superman comeback in Black Adam being cancelled with James Gunn’s Superman taking its place (along with Gunn’s own DCEU projects like Peacemaker Season 2 being the only things seemingly spared a similar fate).

If Gunn’s Superman ends up falling into the classification of “Batman v Superman with Guardians of the Galaxy humor”, the looming spirit of the Snyderverse could become an even bigger issue for the burgeoning DCU than it already is. To begin with, Gunn isn’t severing ties with the DCEU altogether, with the aforementioned Peacemaker Season 2 carrying over plot points and characters along with offering some kind of explanation of the DCEU-DCU continuity connection/transition (presumably, the scene in Peacemaker Season 2’s trailer of two Peacemakers meeting a room with multiple doorways has something to do with this). Additionally, Gunn and Snyder themselves have already made a teasing acknowledgment that the Snyderverse will never die, via Gunn’s friendly social media photo with Snyder at DC Studios, which (Gunn’s denials to the contrary notwithstanding) any rational person reading the situation easily recognizes as something Gunn and Snyder both fully knew would spark widespread theorizing of the Snyderverse’s possible resurrection. In short, both Superman and the DCU are arriving not only with the Snyderverse hovering right over them, but with the captain of the ship actively reminding the audience of its presence.

Adding in Superman‘s story parallels with Batman v Superman, the movie itself will inevitably enter the conversation around Gunn’s film as a far more direct point of comparison than it was already going to be (a glance at social media discussion of the Superman trailer very quickly shows that the movie’s Batman v Superman parallels have hardly gone unnoticed). If the general story and template of Batman v Superman is enough to launch a new DC Universe, the question of “What was the point of even rebooting?” is likely to become a part of Superman‘s discussion, especially if the biggest difference is a lighter tone and more humor. Above all, Superman having such similarities with Batman v Superman could not only drag the latter front and center into the DCU’s debut, but also bring plenty of #RestoreTheSnyderVerse chatter with it. Now, with all of that said, the nine years between Batman v Superman‘s release to the impending release of James Gunn’s Superman have demonstrated the staying power of the former, even if Gunn’s Superman film is nothing like Batman v Superman.

Batman v Superman Has Stood the Test of Time (& Superman Is Probably Going to Add to Its Longevity)

Batman v Superman squaring off

“Divisive” is a word often used to describe Batman v Superman, and while no doubt spot on, the movie’s detractors have often severely underestimated just how much impact Snyder’s polarizing movie has had in the long run. Going back to the behind-the-scenes troubles of Justice League, the fact that Batman v Superman has accrued just as many fans as it has haters no doubt provided a great deal of fuel to the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut campaign, the movement driven in part by Snyder’s version of Justice League being in sync with Man of Steel and Batman v Superman compared to the mish-mash of the theatrical cut. More generally, love it or hate it, Batman v Superman is talked about, discussed, and debated on a daily basis to an extent that most superhero movies would die to inspire. Nine years since its release, Batman v Superman feels every bit as relevant and immediate as a brand new blockbuster with the amount of energy that is still poured into it by fans and detractors alike. Catwoman? Superman Returns? Jonah Hex? Green Lantern? All DC movies of that past alternately bombed, were received with indifference or outright rejection, and not one has struck the kind of nerve that Batman v Superman has, or has built up a fanbase dying to see the conclusion of their intended stories. In short, Batman v Superman, much like the Snyderverse, is radically different from any other abandoned superhero franchise.

Additionally, the generally positive reception of Zack Snyder’s Justice League upon its 2021 release also kicked off a gradual but noticeable reappraisal of Man of Steel and Batman v Superman by their critics, with many coming to appreciate both more after seeing their planned (albeit belatedly released) pay-off in the Snyder Cut. Wherever one stands on Batman v Superman, what cannot be denied is that the movie has maintained a strong relevance in the public consciousness. The irony is that, in WB’s repeated efforts to move away from the Snyderverse both tonally and continuity-wise, they’ve instead only made it more omnipresent in the DC lexicon.

In turn, Gunn’s Superman movie could inadvertently add to Batman v Superman‘s longevity with an unexpectedly similar story that also tacitly endorses a lot of the themes of the movie and the questions it asks about Superman’s place in the world. Even with Warner Bros. trying and failing repeatedly to make the Snyderverse a thing of the past, James Gunn’s Superman might end up making it even more relevant than before with the kindred spirit it seemingly has in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (especially if the movie itself isn’t as good as Man of Steel).

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is available to stream on HBO Max, and James Gunn’s Superman will be released in theaters on July 11th.

John Cena's Peacemaker and David Corenswet's Superman

Peacemaker is one of the few titles from the old DCEU franchise adopted into the new DC Universe continuity, and according to James Gunn, it’s tied into the story tightly, naturally, and seamlessly. Gunn was already the showrunner on Peacemaker when he took the job as co-CEO of DC Studios and began spearheading the entire DCU. All these new responsibilities delayed Peacemaker Season 2, but in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn explained that this also allowed Peacemaker to become more connected to the rest of the franchise. The DCU hits the big screen with Superman on July 11th followed closely by Peacemaker Season 2 on August 21st, and Gunn said the two are “very much connected.”

“Once I was done with Peacemaker, I had to do Guardians 3, and then when I was about ready to jump [back] into Peacemaker, I got hired to be the head of DC,” Gunn explained. “As soon as I got that job, I made a couple of calls, and the first one was to [Marvel’s] Kevin Feige telling him that I’m taking the [job as] head of DC. The second one was to John Cena, and I said, ‘I’m getting this gig, and I still want to do Peacemaker, but it’s going to have to wait. We’re going to have to get Superman working first.'”

Gunn is not only an executive for DC Studios, he’s a driving creative force behind this first batch of DCU titles. He’s the writer and director of Superman, the creator of Creature Commandos, and the showrunner of Peacemaker. He joked that in order to get back to Peacemaker, he just had to “get through this other little movie, this little side project first.” However, working on the two projects back to back also allowed him to forge them together.

“As soon as I was done writing Superman, I was able to write Season 2 of Peacemaker,” Gunn said. “I know it seems like a long time for other people, but for me it all seems awful short because there was so many things I did in between.” The result is that Gunn was perfectly positioned to see how Peacemaker Season 2 could slot into the continuity and establish itself within the DCU.

“I developed it along the way, in conjunction with the other DC projects that we’re doing, so it’s very much connected to Superman and it’s very much connected to what comes after,” he said. “I had a rough idea of what I was going to do, but it was actually quite different than what the show ended up being.”

At the same time, Gunn assured fans that Peacemaker Season 1 is still very much canon, and it will have an impact on the story to come. The series returns on Thursday, August 21st on HBO Max. Season 1 is streaming there now.

David Corenswet’s Man of Steel isn’t the only superhero soaring into the new DC Universe in Superman. The James Gunn written and directed DC Studios film is set to introduce the Element Man Metamorpho (Barry‘s Anthony Carrigan) and, as members of the corporate-sponsored Justice Gang bankrolled by LordTech mogul Maxwell Lord (Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Sean Gunn), superheroes Mister Terrific (For All Mankind‘s Edi Gathegi), the Guy Gardner Green Lantern (Firefly‘s Nathan Fillion), and the high-flying Hawkgirl (The Last of Us season 2 breakout Isabela Merced).

“Kendra is reincarnated, but she’s reincarnated from an alien,” Merced said on the DC Studios Showcase Official Podcast. “So she has all those memories. The story is actually really dark, it’s actually so f-cked up that I wonder how they’re going to handle that when it comes to addressing that.”

While it sounds like Kendra’s backstory won’t be addressed in Superman, Merced added, “She carries all of the memories and the traumas and the mistakes of her past lives in her body wherever she goes, so she has a little bit of a grumpy demeanor.” (Merced will next reprise the role in Peacemaker season 2 opposite Fillion’s Green Lantern later this year on HBO Max.)

LEFT TO RIGHT: GREEN LANTERN GUY GARDNER (NATHAN FILLION), HAWKGIRL (ISABELA MERCED), MISTER TERRIFIC (EDI GATHEGI)

Merced is playing the Kendra Saunders version of the winged warrior, who debuted in the pages of 1999’s JSA Secret Files #1. The grandniece of Shiera Sanders Hall (introduced alongside Hawkman in 1940’s Flash Comics #1 before taking flight as the first Hawkgirl in the Justice Society of America-fronted All Star Comics #5 in 1941), Kendra is also related to another golden age adventurer: she’s the granddaughter of Cyril “Speed” Saunders.

A 19-year-old Kendra assumed the Hawkgirl mantle in the James Robinson and David Goyer-penned JSA run, where her grandfather equipped Kendra with her great-aunt’s wings. Haunted by strange dreams of ancient Egypt and other planets like Thanagar, it was later revealed that Kendra attempted suicide after her parents were murdered.

In 2001’s JSA #21, written by Goyer and Geoff Johns, the fallen guardian angel Zauriel explained Kendra’s history: she didn’t survive her second suicide attempt, and that the visions in which she died over and over again in different time periods were her past lives. Speed then confirmed that the green-eyed Kendra died when she overdosed on pills, and that the brown-eyed Shiera — herself a reincarnated form of the Egyptian princess Chay-Ara — was inhabiting Kendra’s body. (Prince Khufu Kha-Taar of ancient Egypt would one day be reincarnated as Carter Hall: Hawkman.)

“I love it. Honestly, it gives me so much backstory and it’s super helpful,” the Madame Web star added of Kendra’s complicated history in the comics. “But then, also, with the James Gunn twist, you know, that self-awareness and the comedy of it all … It gives me [the] opportunity to sort of make light of my trauma.”

Ciara Renée played the reincarnated Kendra Saunders in live-action on the Arrowverse series The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow, while Sahar Biniaz briefly appeared as the Shayera Hall version of the character (a portmanteau of Shayera Thal/Shiera Hall) on Smallville. Most famously, Maria Canals-Barrera voiced the Shayera Hol Hawkgirl in the animated series Justice League and Justice League Unlimited.

Superman — starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, María Gabriela de Faría, Wendell Pierce, Alan Tudyk, Neva Howell, Pruitt Taylor Vince, and Frank Grillo — is only in theaters July 11.

Nicholas Hoult in Superman

Nicholas Hoult will soon portray the DC Universe’s Lex Luthor in James Gunn’s Superman, meaning now is the perfect time to catch up on his best movies. Over the years, the British actor has worked with acclaimed directors and shared the screen with other talented performers. Hoult’s filmography includes titles of all genres from horror to action to dark comedy. In the realm of comic book franchises, Hoult previously played Hank McCoy aka Beast in 2011’s X-Men: First Class and three subsequent X-Men movies. Still, Hoult’s talent is best exhibited in standalone original films like The Menu, Nosferatu, and more.

The following five movies feature Hoult in prominent roles, and they are well worth watching before Superman comes out.

1) Mad Max: Fury Road

Nicholas Hoult in Mad Max: Fury Road

2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road ranks among the best action movies of the last decade. The fourth installment of director George Miller’s franchise introduces Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky, who engages in an exhilarating road war against Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne), the ruler of the film’s post-apocalyptic wasteland. In Mad Max: Fury Road, Hoult plays Nux, a War Boy who fights alongside Max, Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron), and their allies. The movie’s action sequences are absolutely riveting, depicting clashes of vehicles and characters armed with various unique weapons. Visually gorgeous and full of interesting characters, Mad Max: Fury Road could easily be considered the franchise’s best entry. The film’s entire cast delivers exceptional performances, and Hoult’s layered interpretation of Nux’s arc from villain to hero stands out.

2) The Menu

Nicholas Hoult and Anya Taylor-Joy in The Menu

Dark humor and savvy social commentary come together perfectly in 2022’s The Menu. Directed by Mark Mylod, the movie follows young couple Tyler Ledford (Hoult) and Margot Mills (Anya Taylor-Joy), who travel to famous chef Julian Slowik’s (Ralph Fiennes) private island for a lavish multi-course meal alongside other affluent guests. From beginning to end, The Menu is funny, intelligent, and unpredictable. The film features tons of excellent performances, and Hoult does well portraying Tyler’s underlying villainy as their experience gets wilder with each passing course. The Menu creatively explores themes of artistic value and perfection in one’s craft, incorporating notes of humor and over-the-top violence. To date, the movie remains one of Hoult’s greatest projects.

3) Nosferatu

Nicholas Hoult in Nosferatu

Hoult’s most recent movie is none other than Robert Eggers’ brilliant 2024 adaptation of Nosferatu. Set in early-1800s Germany, the horror tale revolves around a reclusive vampire known as Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård), whose spirit calls out to Thomas Hutter’s (Hoult) wife Ellen (Lily-Rose Depp) and seduces her, Meanwhile, Thomas’ job as a real estate agent takes him to Orlok’s castle, where he is subjected to unimaginable terrors. Eggers nails the eerie atmosphere of a gothic horror film, and each character is well-written and well-performed. Orlok is creepy enough to send shivers down anyone’s spine, and Nosferatu‘s set design provides great detail to the story. Hoult’s portrayal of Thomas convincingly conveys the fear he feels amid encounters with Orlok during his stay at the castle, which noticeably alters his demeanor for the rest of the movie. Another superb title on Hoult’s resume, Nosferatu will likely propel the actor to many great roles in the future.

4) The Favourite

Nicholas Hoult in The Favorite

2018’s The Favourite, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, fictionalizes real-life British royalty in a dark comedy setting. The plot takes place in the early-1700s in Great Britain and centers on two cousins, Abigail Hill (Emma Stone) and Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz), competing to be the foremost companion of Queen Anne (Olivia Colman). Hoult plays Robert Harley, 1st Earl of Oxford and Earl Mortimer in The Favourite. The character wears a long wig and a full face of makeup, easily becoming one of the more fashionable roles Hoult has played. Hoult doesn’t appear on screen as much as The Favourite‘s main trio, however he doesn’t waste a second of his time in front of the camera, imposingly portraying Harley’s callous and ambitious personality as the Queen’s political leader.

5) Juror #2

Nicholas Hoult in Juror #2

Another standout movie from 2024, Clint Eastwood’s Juror #2 stars Hoult as Justin Kemp, a journalist who’s called for jury duty in the trial of a man charged with murdering his girlfriend. As the trial unfolds, Justin realizes that the circumstances of the event line up with one night he spent out at a bar. Juror #2 fascinatingly explores Justin’s moral dilemma as he realizes the alleged murderer might be innocent. Hoult delivers a captivating portrayal of the main character, who weighs the value of revealing the truth versus preserving his current life with his wife soon-to-be-born child. An engrossing crime story with plenty of twists, Juror #2 is a must-see for those who love thought-provoking mysteries.

All of these titles are available to stream across various platforms. Superman opens in theaters on July 11th.

Zachary Levi has directly addressed the persistent questions surrounding his future as Shazam within the new DC Universe being crafted by James Gunn and Peter Safran. In a recent interview with Variety, the actor expressed his affection for the role and his willingness to return, while also making it clear that any such decisions are currently out of his hands. This comes as the DC Studios’ new strategy for an interconnected cinematic universe gains momentum, with key superhero roles being recast and the projects currently on schedule for release underlining how the previous DC Extended Universe (DCEU), which starred Levi, is dead.

“Absolutely. I loved playing the role,” Levi stated unequivocally when asked if he wished to return as the magically powered hero, a character he first brought to the screen in 2019’s Shazam! and reprised in the 2023 sequel, Shazam! Fury of the Gods. However, regarding any actual plans for his character’s inclusion in the new DCU, Levi was equally clear about his current standing, admitting, “No idea. It’s all well above my pay grade”.

Despite Levi’s enthusiasm, his return as Shazam is unlikely. While the initial Shazam! film was a critical darling and a box office success, earning $367.8 million worldwide against a $100 million budget. Its sequel pulled only $134.1 million globally, marking it as a considerable financial disappointment for Warner Bros. Discovery. In addition, Levi has been at the heart of multiple controversies in recent years. These included a January 2023 tweet where Levi stated, “Hardcore agree,” in response to a query asking if Pfizer posed a “real danger to the world,” leading to accusations of promoting vaccine skepticism. In addition, during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, comments he made at Manchester Comic Con calling the rules preventing him from discussing his past work “so dumb” also drew backlash, for which he later clarified he supported his union but was frustrated by certain limitations.

More pointedly, after the death of Broadway actor Gavin Creel, Levi shared an article about Creel’s passing with a cryptic caption about “the truth,” which many, aware of Creel’s prior openness about a myocarditis diagnosis and Levi’s perceived vaccine skepticism, criticized as an insensitive attempt to politicize the tragedy. Levi also publicly shared and commented on reports and fan theories suggesting that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson had actively worked against the Shazam franchise’s success and crossover potential with Black Adam, further fueling online dissent.

The DCU’s Extensive Plans Don’t Include Shazam (So Far)

The current plans for the DCU are steering away from badly-received superheroes and actors from the DCEU era, such as Levi’s Shazam. The new DCU officially started with the animated series Creature Commandos, which premiered on Max in late 2024. This seven-episode first season, written by Gunn, introduced a black-ops team of monsters and included numerous Easter eggs and mentions of established DC entities and locations, such as Themyscira,  A.R.G.U.S., and even the Justice League. However, Shazam is not yet part of the canon.

Following Creature Commandos, the DCU’s theatrical launch is spearheaded by James Gunn’s Superman, starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult. On the Max streaming side, Peacemaker Season 2, starring John Cena, will follow Superman. In 2026, DC Studios is officially releasing the Max series Lanterns, the DCU film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and a film centered on Clayface, written by Mike Flanagan. All these projects are focused on expanding the universe and explaining how classic heroes inhabit the world, maybe even hinting at a new version of Shazam.

Superman is scheduled to fly into theaters on July 11th.

Superman is evolving with the times in a new motion poster released on Thursday. It shows Clark Kent changing into Superman in a flash — an iconic change that has been a staple of Superman movies since the 1970s. There’s no phone booth, revolving door, or cheeky pay phone this time around — instead, the new ad leans on the prevalence of short-form videos and animated GIFs to get the point across. It already has fans speculating about how we might see David Corenswet change his outfit in this new movie. Superman hits theaters on Friday, July 11th, rebooting the character once again while kicking off the new DC Universe continuity.

It’s no surprise that DC Studios has been pulling out all the stops to advertise its first DCU movie, and its hotly-anticipated reboot of the Superman character on the big screen. We’ve already seen two trailers, some teaser images, and a lot of other promotion for this movie, and it’s still over a month away. “Motion posters” have been used quite a lot in this ad campaign, bringing the epic feel of Superman into the modern era of mobile screens and social media.

Superman’s outfit change has been a central feature of his stories from the comics to cartoons to the big screen, and every other medium in between. In part, this is likely due to the sharp contrast between his two personas, as audiences need to see the unassuming Clark Kent turn into the unstoppable Superman to really feel the impact of the transformation.

On a more pragmatic level, the transformation has left creators a lot of room to have some fun. Nearly a century ago, it was perfectly natural for Superman to find a phonebooth nearby any crime scene and change in a hurry. These public spaces were already more common in Metropolis than in real-life U.S. cities, and they continued to appear conveniently in comics throughout the 1970s.

This culminated in a meta joke in Superman: The Movie in 1978, when Clark Kent (Christopher Reeve) takes a lingering look at an open-design pay phone, realizing it won’t help him change at all. Instead, he rushes into a revolving door as Clark and comes out as Superman. Since then, other creators have had fun with this reference, finding unique ways for Superman to change and leaning heavily on his superspeed to get it done.

It seems pretty likely that this year’s new movie will have its own take on this bit, but we’ll probably have to wait and see it in theaters. Superman premieres on Friday, July 11th.

Nicholas Hoult and David Corenswet in Superman

As Warner Bros. revs up the Superman promotional campaign ahead of the film’s release this July, the studio is reportedly dealing with another lawsuit regarding the movie’s premiere. According to Puck, the lawsuit from Superman co-creator Joe Shuster’s estate has been re-filed in New York state court. As was the case previously, the lawsuit is looking to block the release of Superman in a handful of international territories (the U.K., Ireland, Canada, and Australia), claiming copyright infringement. With under two months until Superman‘s scheduled debut, attorney Marc Toberoff is hoping to get the matter resolved swiftly.

“Last week, a New York Supreme Court judge ordered Warners to submit opposition papers by Friday [May 23rd], and appear in court on June 4 to explain why an injunction shouldn’t be granted,” Eriq Gardner wrote in the Puck newsletter.

The first lawsuit concerning Superman‘s international release was filed back in January. Shortly after, Warner Bros. and DC Comics moved to have it dismissed, pointing out that plaintiff Warren Peary’s mother had “signed away all rights to the Superman character” after Shuster passed away. In April, the case was dismissed. Judge Jesse M. Furman cited “lack of jurisdiction over the case” in the ruling.

Superman is poised to be WB’s major tentpole release this summer, serving as the first big-screen title in the DC Universe franchise. The studio is very excited by what director James Gunn has in store and recently unveiled the official trailer. The trailer’s release is part of a big marketing push for the movie, as fans have also gotten looks at tie-in merchandise, such as toys that tease action set pieces.

Since the lawsuit has already been dismissed once, it doesn’t sound like Warner Bros. needs to be too concerned about this latest filing. It’s important to keep in mind that when the studio moved to have the case dismissed, the argument was that “the issue has already been extensively litigated,” citing instances where the courts had previously rebuffed Peary. Assuming there’s no new evidence that’s come to light, Superman should be able to enjoy its full theatrical rollout later this summer. Based on everything that’s come out concerning the lawsuit, Peary doesn’t have much grounds for the courts to side with him.

Superman is obviously a very important part of WB’s film slate this year. Though concerns about it possibly deciding the future of the studio as a whole have subsided thanks to successes like Sinners and A Minecraft Movie, the DC Universe franchise is dependent on Superman being a hit. Gunn and Co. have several other projects in development, looking to build a shared universe across movies and TV shows. So any money Superman can make from various international territories will help the studio realize its goal. If the film’s release was blocked, it would make a negative impact on its box office prospects, but fortunately, this shouldn’t be an issue.

The big marketing push for James Gunn’s Superman continues with the release of a new still image depicting star David Corenswet as the titular character. In the photo, Kal-El strikes a classic pose in what appears to be the Fortress of Solitude. There isn’t much context provided for the shot, so Superman’s reasons for being there are unknown. Based on his expression, one possibility is he is preparing himself for a fight against an unseen enemy that’s lurking somewhere off camera. Another is that Superman is visiting the Fortress of Solitude for reflection during a trying time.

The image was shared as an exclusive by Fandango as part of the outlet’s summer movie preview. You can check it out in the space below:

David Corenswet Superman Fortress of Solitude Fandango image

With just under two months remaining until Superman hits theaters this July, Warner Bros. has kicked off a promotional blitz. A new official trailer for the film was released earlier this month, setting the stage for some of the story beats and themes Gunn is exploring. There was also recently an announcement for early Superman screenings taking place a few days before its theatrical debut, which are available only to Amazon Prime members.

Positioned as WB’s big summer tentpole this year, the studio is very excited with what they have in Superman. Executives Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy praised Gunn for “understanding the assignment” as he lays the foundation for the DC Universe franchise. WB obviously has a lot riding on Superman‘s success, hoping to build a massive shared universe.

While it remains to be seen how Corenswet’s performance in the final film turns out, the early looks in marketing have emphasized that he has the right look and spirit to portray the character. In the past, Gunn has explained the decision behind casting Corenswet in the role, praising the actor for having the right demeanor and traits necessary for Superman. This image is just another example of how Corenswet looks the part, and many people in the replies on Fandango’s tweet expressed enthusiasm for how good the actor looks in the costume. If Superman lives up to these glimpses, fans could be in for a treat.

Perhaps unsurprisingly given its importance to the source material, the Fortress of Solitude has been highlighted throughout the marketing campaign. The most notable instance was the five-minute sneak peek that was attached to A Minecraft Movie screenings. There was also an action figure set that hinted at a showdown between Superman and a yeti-like creature in the Fortress. It’ll be interesting to see how the iconic location factors into the film and how much action takes place there. The above photo could be from right before Superman battles against the alien monster.

Milly Alcock, star of DC Studios’ upcoming Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, has confirmed the highly anticipated movie has finished filming. The actress, who steps into the role of Kara Zor-El, shared the update during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The confirmation echoes an earlier social media post from DC Studios co-head James Gunn, who had told fans that principal photography on Supergirl was complete. As a significant piece of the new DC Universe architected by Gunn and Peter Safran, the movie’s progression into post-production marks a crucial step towards its theatrical debut. Helmed by director Craig Gillespie, recognized for his work on I, Tonya, and penned by Ana Nogueira, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow now enters a lengthy phase where visual effects, sound, and the final edit will be meticulously assembled.

“We can say that I’m Supergirl,” Alcock stated on the show, confirming her status as the Woman of Steel while artfully dodging any further revelations. While Alcock and Fallon exchanged some friendly banter about the upcoming DCU movie, she remained determined to keep specific details about the film’s narrative under wraps, respecting DC Studios’ commitment to secrecy.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow draws inspiration from a comic book series by the same name, a celebrated run by writer Tom King and artist Bilquis Evely. That particular story arc is noted for its distinct portrayal of Kara Zor-El, presenting a hero shaped by profound loss and a more hardened worldview, a depiction Gunn has previously characterized as “much more hardcore” compared to other versions of the character. As the co-head of DC Studios puts it, Supergirl’s formative years were spent witnessing the destruction of her home on a fragment of Krypton, a stark contrast to the upbringing of her cousin, Superman, which will help give them distinct personalities. In addition, the comic narrative launches Kara, accompanied by Krypto the Superdog, on an interstellar quest for justice with a young alien girl, Ruthye Marye Knoll, giving the story a unique space-western flavor. As leaked set images for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow have already revealed, the movie will take some liberties with the original material while keeping its emotional core. The ensemble for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow also includes Jason Momoa, who is anticipated to appear as the Czarnian bounty hunter Lobo.

The DCU Will Make Its Theatrical Debut With Superman

Before Milly Alcock’s Supergirl takes flight in 2026, the new DC Universe will make its grand theatrical entrance with Superman. This foundational film, which Gunn both wrote and is directing, will introduce audiences to David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel and Rachel Brosnahan as the intrepid reporter Lois Lane. Superman is designed to be the cornerstone of the DCU’s new cinematic chapter, establishing the overarching tone and direction for the interconnected stories to follow. In this continuity, Clark is already operating as Superman while pursuing his career as a journalist at the Daily Planet, skipping the Man of Steel’s origin story. In addition, the film intends to portray a Superman who champions truth and kindness, even when those ideals seem out of step with the world around him. Audiences will also see Clark Kent navigating his dual identity, balancing his Kryptonian origins with his upbringing in Smallville, Kansas, by his adoptive parents, Jonathan Kent (Pruitt Taylor Vince) and Martha Kent (Neva Howell).

In addition to its titular character, Superman will also introduce multiple fan-favorite DC characters, including Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), and Nathan Fillion as the Green Lantern, Guy Gardner. This established presence of heroes means that Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will unfold in a DC Universe where the extraordinary is not entirely unknown, providing a dynamic backdrop for Kara Zor-El’s own story.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is scheduled to fly into theaters on June 26, 2026. Before that, Superman arrives on July 11, 2025.

What aspect of the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic are you most excited to see adapted for the big screen? Let us know in the comments!

James Gunn’s Superman movie trailers left DC fans asking a fair amount of questions, and one of the biggest has been the identity of what looks to be the most powerful foe that Superman (David Corenswet) will face in the film. Every Superman trailer has featured a sequence of the Man of Steel having a superpowered throwdown with a masked mystery villain in a black suit, with a metallic “U” insignia on his chest. That suit led to a whole lot of speculation about which famous DC bad guy Gunn has included in the film. However, all that speculation is over now, since the identity of Superman‘s mystery villain has been confirmed – in the most unexpected way.

….Unless you’re a longtime fan of comic book movies. In that case, this is once again par for the course.

The merchandising line tied to Superman has revealed an action figure that seems to be based on the mystery brute from the film, and that figure is labeled as “Ultraman,” which confirms the most popular theory that fans have had since first seeing the DC Universe version of Ultraman onscreen. The comic book version of Ultraman has a long history in the DCU, as he’s an alternate-universe version of Superman who turned evil instead of embracing the nobler sentiments of humanity. And while the version of Ultraman we’re seeing in Superman has (so far) appeared to be a kind of generic brute henchman, it doesn’t mean that Gunn isn’t setting up some of the deeper, larger DC lore that comes with the character.

Who Is DC’s Ultraman?

Nite Owl, Deathstorm, Power Ring, Johnny Quick, Ultraman, and Superwoman standing over the fallen Aquaman

Ultraman was a version of Superman from Earth-3 of the DC Multiverse – a world controlled by evil variants of the Justice League known as the “Crime Syndicate of America.” Ultraman (evil Superman) led a squad that originally included Superwoman (evil Wonder Woman), Owlman (evil Batman), Johnny Quick (evil Flash), and Power Ring (evil Green Lantern). In various DC comic storylines (and one great animated film), the Justice League of the prime Earth have been brought to Earth-3 to fight the Crime Syndicate – or had the villains invade their own world, making for some of the most high-stakes and compelling battles within the all-too-famliar “evil mirror image” comic book trope.

Again, the new DCU franchise has yet to make it clear if it will include a character like Ultraman as a mere mindless brute villain who has an Easter egg for a name (like Marvel tends to do), or if Ultraman’s appearance in Superman is Gunn playing chess three or four moves ahead, laying the groundwork for a larger story about the DC Multiverse, and what could be lurking out there. Other scenes from the Superman and Peacemaker Season 2 trailers certainly back up that theory.

Superman will be in theaters on July 11th.

Director James Gunn debunked a fan theory about his upcoming Superman movie on Threads, leaving some fans disappointed but grateful for the clarification. It started with a screenshot from the most recent trailer, and a shot where Superman is flying so fast, he’s hard to make out. A fan tried altering the brightness on the image, speculating that this might not be the Man of Steel at all, but perhaps a surprise character we haven’t even heard will be in this movie. Considering the colors and the supersonic flight, they figured this could be Bizarro, but Gunn responded promptly to say it is not.

“Haha it’s Superman. It’s real photography of David [Corenswet],” the filmmaker wrote. A few fans considered that he might still be deflecting from the truth to try and cover up his secrets, but most took him at his word. Gunn is very straightforward with fans on social media, and while a few would have preferred to ponder this theory a bit longer, others were glad he corrected their course so they wouldn’t go too far in the wrong direction.

Superman is already packed to the gills with heroes and villains, so a secret character this late in the game would be a real shock. We’ll meet the DCU’s new Lex Luthor in this movie, and it looks like he’ll be working with Angela Spica, The Engineer from The Authority, as well as Creature Commandos’ Rick Flag Sr. Sean Gunn is also making his debut appearance as Maxwell Lord, and there’s a mysterious masked figure in the trailer that many fans suspect is Ultraman, or a version of him.

There are just as many heroes to introduce in this movie — we’ll meet the Green Latern Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, and Metamorpho. We can’t assume they’ll all be perfectly aligned with Superman, though we know that they’re definitely not villains either. This movie is also expected to introduce Supergirl before she gets her own movie next year.

The stacked cast has many fans and critics low-balling their estimations of the worldbuilding and story content of this movie, wondering how it will bring all these elements together in a compelling story. We don’t know much about the plot so far, and it’s safe to say there’s some kind of surprise ahead when it comes to the narrative. We’ll find out for ourselves soon enough — Superman hits theaters on July 11th in the U.S.

The latest trailer for James Gunn’s highly anticipated Superman has offered new glimpses of the Man of Steel (David Corenswet) in action, his allies, and the world he’ll inhabit. However, amidst the grand spectacle, eagle-eyed viewers have spotted a subtle but significant CGI alteration to Superman’s costume compared to what was previously seen. The discovery of an updated cape for Superman in a key romantic scene with Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) was highlighted by Reddit user BatmanNewsChris on the r/DC_Cinematic subreddit, showcasing a refinement that many feel improves the hero’s iconic look. This minor tweak demonstrates the filmmaking team’s impressive attention to detail in the post-production process as they prepare for the film’s 2025 release.

In the initial teaser trailer for Superman, a memorable shot featured Superman and Lois Lane embracing while hovering above the ground. At the time, some fans observed that Superman’s cape appeared unusually long and defied the expected physics of such a scene. BatmanNewsChris provided a side-by-side comparison using images from both trailers, clearly showing the cape’s adjusted length and drape in the newer footage. The cape now appears shorter and hangs with a more natural sense of gravity, as if being gently pulled downwards. This change underscores how Gunn and his team keep working hard behind the scenes to ensure each frame of Superman is perfect.

The fan reaction to this discovered tweak, as seen in the r/DC_Cinematic thread, has been largely positive, with many appreciating the improved look. User Wrothman commented, “If you watch in motion, the teaser cape looks weird, because it’s curving into the direction that they’re rotating… Trailer cape is behaving far more like you’d expect a cape to in that scenario.” This sentiment regarding the enhanced realism was shared by ds0005, who added, “I think you’re right, the new one behaves more fluid and has inertia with it, it does lag behind while rotating, the teaser one looks fake like, it’s too stiff.” Other users, like advester, suggested the initial version was likely part of a less polished render, stating, “The previz probably didn’t have the full physics sim.”

Everything We Know About Superman After the Latest Trailer

The latest trailer for James Gunn’s Superman has not only refined capes but also significantly expanded our understanding of this new iteration of the DC Universe’s flagship hero. Gunn, who is both writing and directing, is aiming to present a Superman who embodies truth, justice, and a better tomorrow, with a strong emphasis on kindness in a world that may view such qualities as old-fashioned. The film will explore Clark Kent’s journey as he reconciles his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing in Smallville, Kansas, under the guidance of his adoptive parents, Jonathan Kent (Pruitt Taylor Vince) and Martha Kent (Neva Howell). This Clark Kent is already established as Superman and works as a young reporter for the Daily Planet, where his relationship with star journalist Lois Lane is a central element of the story.

One of the most striking takeaways from the new footage is the clear depiction of a DC world already populated by numerous superheroes. The trailer provided the best look yet at Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, showcasing a remarkably comics-accurate, patchwork appearance for the Element Man. Viewers also got more dynamic shots of Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, utilizing her wings and what appears to be Nth metal weaponry. Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific was glimpsed with his signature T-Spheres in action, and Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner made a more prominent appearance using green constructs to dispatch of enemies. Finally, María Gabriela de Faría’s The Engineer unleashed her liquid metal nanotechnology powers in what looked to be a significant action sequence involving Krypto the Superdog.

Superman is scheduled to fly into theaters on July 11th.

The DCU has an upswell of positivity behind it lately. The upcoming release of Superman has the DCU on everyone’s mind, which is very a good thing. DC Studios head James Gunn’s Superman has a lot to overcome, and it looks like it’s going to fly the DCU into a great future. This is something that honestly didn’t seem like it was ever going to happen for DC fans. The DCEU, the last attempt at DC superhero movies, was rife with bombs and failed to connect with anyone but the most fervent fans of director Zack Snyder, who basically abandoned it after Snyder left. The DCEU was a mitigated failure, and the fact that the DCU has so much positivity behind it is a huge change of pace.

The failure of the DCEU didn’t come from just one factor, but a big part of the problems with the DCEU was the worldbuilding. The DCEU failed to take advantage of the best parts of DC Comics, and it turned off a lot of fans. The DCU has built a lot of anticipation, but it can still fail if it makes the same kinds of mistakes that the DCEU has made. Worldbuilding is one of the most important parts of a franchise as large as the DCU, and it needs to make up for the mistakes of the past.

The DCU Needs to Remember the Key to Worldbuilding Is Storytelling

The biggest worldbuilding mistake that the DCEU made, and it’s honestly one that seems like it could be a problem looking at Superman, was that it rushed everything. Man of Steel wasn’t a massive hit, but it did well at the box office and with critics. Warner Bros. wanted some of that Marvel Cinematic Universe money and moved forward with using Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice as a way to do all of the work that Marvel Studios had done in Phase One in one movie.

The DCEU’s worldbuilding didn’t work because they crammed too much of it into one movie. Instead of organically introducing characters, the DCEU tried to debut a bunch of them in one scene of a movie that was already introducing Batman, Lex Luthor, and Wonder Woman. Introducing three characters is a big job and an argument can be made that Batman v Superman did a good job with establishing who those characters were. However, everyone else? The movie would have been better off not even trying to introduce characters like the Flash, Cyborg, and Aquaman. Warner Bros. wanted to get to The Avengers without ever doing the movies to build those characters up.

Right off the bat, it’s plain to see the similarities between Superman and Batman v Superman. Multiple DC characters are also making their first appearance in Superman, and it can be easy to paint this as a mistake sight unseen. However, the biggest problem with Batman v Superman‘s inclusion of characters like Flash, Cyborg, and Aquaman wasn’t that they appeared, it’s that their appearance didn’t matter to the story. To make this sort of thing work, new characters have to be a part of the story. That’s why Batman worked in Batman v Superman, because he was a part of the story.

Superman in particular and the DCU in general need to remember that worldbuilding is actually, well, building. It’s fine to introduce a bunch of characters, but the way to do it isn’t a bunch of weird little cameos that have little to no bearing on the actual story. Worldbuilding is storytelling. Characters like Mister Terrific, Hawkgirl, Guy Gardner, and Metamorpho all seem to be playing a role in the story of Superman, and that’s the way to go. They aren’t just there to show that this is a universe; that’s good worldbuilding. That’s the lesson that the DCEU didn’t always learn.

The DCU Needs to Embrace the Strengths of DC Comics

There’s another problem with the worldbuilding of the DCEU as well, and it’s that the DCEU never seemed to embrace what DC really is. The DCEU started out as a darker superhero alternative to the MCU, but that ignored the fact that DC Comics aren’t dark. Superman is a character defined by hope, who likes to rescue cats from trees for kids. Batman started his war against crime in order to make sure no one dies ever again, not so that he could kill criminals. DC stories aren’t always ponderous affairs about the nature of superheroes and gods — although DC does this very well — they’re more often fun superhero adventures about characters who smile and have fans who love them. The DCEU could never find a way to hit the right tone, and it suffered gravely for that.

The DCU has a tough job in front of it. DC hasn’t had the best name in superhero media until the last few years, and even then, many fans are still reticent about DC. If the DCU actually wants to be as successful as the MCU, it needs to sidestep the worldbuilding mistakes that the DCEU made. It needs to take the mistakes that the DCEU made and learn from them. Worldbuilding is storytelling as much as it is introducing characters, and if the DCU can get it right, then success should follow.

Superman will premiere in theaters on July 11th.

“In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight. Let those who worship evil’s might beware my power…Green Lantern’s light!” So goes the oath that every Green Lantern takes before wielding their own will-powered emerald power ring granted by the Guardians of the Universe, who have appointed the Green Lantern Corps to patrol 3,600 sectors across the galaxy. But of the many Green Lanterns throughout the history of the DC Universe, only one man has worn the ring of both Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner in live-action and animation: Nathan Fillion.

The Firefly star voiced the Hal Jordan Green Lantern in six DC animated movies between 2011 and 2019, and he’ll make his live-action Green Lantern debut as the hotheaded and bowlcut-haired Guy Gardner in James Gunn’s Superman.

“Being a part of the new Superman movie is a dream beyond my wildest,” the actor wrote on Instagram, attaching a photo of his slabbed copy of Guy Gardner’s first appearance in 1968’s Green Lantern #59. “I collected comics as a kid. Imagine telling that young boy that as an adult, he’d be flying around with Superman, wielding the power of a Green Lantern!”

“I’m so fortunate, not only to be enjoying this childhood vision realized, but also to have wonderful friends who support and celebrate these joys along with me,” Fillion continued. “One of them was kind enough to gift me with Guy Gardner’s first appearance back in March of 1968, never touched by human hands. What a rare treasure – both the comic, and you, Bill Roe. You sure know how to make a fella feel special. Love ya.” (Roe is a longtime collaborator of Fillion’s, having directed the actor in dozens of episodes of Castle and The Rookie.)

Superman marks the sixth time that Fillion has collaborated with Gunn, having appeared in his directorial debut, 2006’s Slither, and then in the filmmaker’s 2008 comedy series PG Porn and the Rainn Wilson-fronted 2010 superhero comedy Super.

After playing minor roles in the Gunn-directed Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and T.D.K./The Detachable Kid in 2021’s The Suicide Squad, Fillion will have an ongoing role in the new DC Universe overseen by Gunn and his DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran.

He’ll first appear in Superman as a member of Maxwell Lord’s (Sean Gunn) Justice Gang — a corporate-sponsored superhero team that includes Mister Terrific (For All Mankind‘s Edi Gathegi) and Hawkgirl (The Last of Us‘ Isabela Merced) — and can be seen heckling Justice Gang hopeful Christopher Smith (John Cena) in Peacemaker season 2 later this year on HBO Max. Fillion will then reprise his role in HBO’s Lanterns, the True Detective-style drama series following Green Lantern Corps new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) as the intergalactic cops are drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Fillion first voiced Hal Jordan in the DC Universe Animated Original Movies-branded Green Lantern: Emerald Knights in 2011, and again in 2012’s Tower of Babel adaptation Justice League: Doom, 2013’s Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, and 2015’s JL: Throne of Atlantis. He donned a Green Lantern costume while appearing as himself in a 2012 skit on The Daly Show, and Fillion would go on to voice Jordan in 2018’s The Death of Superman and its 2019 sequel, Reign of the Supermen.

Superman — starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, María Gabriela de Faría, Wendell Pierce, Alan Tudyk, Neva Howell, Pruitt Taylor Vince, and Frank Grillo — is only in theaters July 11.

Superman will be in theaters faster than a speeding bullet — but the wait just got shorter. Warner Bros. and Amazon have partnered for exclusive advance screenings of the first DC Studios film from writer and director James Gunn, with Amazon Prime Early Screenings of Superman set to take place on July 7.

The promotion will be open to Amazon Prime members via the online retailer’s Superman store offering merchandise from and inspired by the new movie, which soars into theaters nationwide on July 11.

Warner Bros. previously teamed up with Amazon and Atom Tickets to host early showings of Aquaman in 2018, with the sneak peek netting nearly $3 million in ticket sales from over 1,200 theaters. The studio also made history with Walmart’s premiere night presentation of 2013’s Man of Steel, which marked the first time that a studio partnered with a retailer for an early movie premiere.

DC Studios’ first feature film is written and directed by Gunn (the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, The Suicide Squad) and stars David Corenswet (Twisters) as the Man of Steel with Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult (the X-Men movies) as Lex Luthor.

The film also stars Edi Gathegi (For All Mankind) as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan (Gotham) as Metamorpho, Nathan Fillion (The Suicide Squad) as the Guy Gardner Green Lantern, Isabela Merced (The Last of Us) as Hawkgirl, with Skyler Gisondo (The Righteous Gemstones) as Superman’s pal, Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio (At Midnight) as Eve Teschmacher, María Gabriela de Faría (The Moodys) as Angela Spica/the Engineer, Wendell Pierce (Thunderbolts*) as The Daily Planet chief Perry White, Alan Tudyk (Andor) as the voice of Robot #4, Neva Howell (Greedy People) as Martha Kent, and Pruitt Taylor Vince (Bird Box) as Jonathan Kent.

Look for Superman in theaters on July 11.

Peacemaker as depicted in the first season of his solo TV show (2022)

The full trailer for Peacemaker Season 2 revealed that two crime-fighting characters from Superman would be appearing in this John Cena-headlined program. Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl and Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner/Green Lantern show up briefly in the trailer, mocking Peacemaker, thus establishing how this Suicide Squad character is firmly an underdog in the DC Universe. It’s also another sign that the various TV show and movie characters in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new multimedia take on the DC Comics mythos were profoundly intertwined.

Fillion’s Green Lantern will even show up in HBO’s Lanterns TV show alongside Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart. For the DC Universe, there will be no barrier between the big and small screen. This saga is hitting the ground running as something that transpires across streaming and movie theaters. However, if there’s any DC Universe detail that already suggests problems for this franchise, it’s this emphasis on shared continuity between movies and television.

Juggling Movie & TV Mythology Asks Too Much of the Audience

It’s one thing to ask people to remember who plays Batman and Superman in massive theatrically-released motion pictures. Such high-profile projects dominate pop culture so thoroughly that just being cognizant of whose faces are showing up on superhero movie promotional billboards is enough to keep track of key continuity details. Plus, these projects typically range from 120-150 minutes. Compare that to the eight or ten hours of material crammed into an average season of television. Such material also doesn’t tend to get nearly as much promotion as a movie, which can render those characters more obscure to the general public.

Those two details alone demonstrate the struggles of balancing movie and TV continuity, particularly in having TV storytelling inform what directions motion pictures go in. Asking people to constantly keep track of every player in lengthy seasons of television is too daunting a task. After all, TV has been defined throughout history as a relaxed form of storytelling where you can chill with your best pals on Seinfeld, Community, or other sitcoms. Dramas like ER or Law & Order provide concise problems that get solved every week in a tidy fashion. Utilizing this medium to lay the groundwork for movies runs antithetical to either the most escapist or artistic goals of television.

Plus, when it comes to the heightened world of DC Comics characters, the budgetary confines of television just don’t seem ideal. Lanterns, for instance, will take the uber-cosmic world of Green Lantern and ground it in a murder mystery set in Nebraska. Forget all the gloriously colorful outer space domains from the Green Lantern comics or endearing weirdo aspects of Green Lantern lore like Tomar-Re, Kilowag, or the Pink Lanterns. Fitting into the confines of what an HBO program “should” look like means the Green Lantern world is being whittled down into uber-ground cost-conscious material. Why emphasize televised storytelling in the DC Universe if it just sounds like it’ll deprive these characters of their most distinctive traits?

Marvel’s Television Woes Provide a Cautionary Tale for the DCU

secret-invasion-nick-fury-super-skrull.png

If anything crystallizes the perils of the DC Universe immediately embracing serialized storytelling across movies and television, it’s the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s creative woes in the 2020s. Starting in 2021, Marvel Studios began delivering a slew of streaming programs to Disney+ that quickly hampered the franchise in countless ways. For starters, making movies like The Marvels and Multiverse of Madness so reliant on pre-existing television storylines made those features incoherent to general audiences. Meanwhile, ramping up the small screen output with shows like Secret Invasion diluted the quality track record of Marvel Studios.

Most troublesome, though, was how the Disney+ shows instantly removed the special nature of Marvel superheroes. In the 2010s, these were grand characters that could only be witnessed in delightful communal experiences at your local movie theater. Bringing Wanda Maximoff, Nick Fury, Hawkeye, and other MCU staples to Disney+ just diluted their specialness. Now they were just something you could watch on your couch while scrolling on your phone. Once these figures returned to the big screen, the damage was done. Audiences understandably wondered why they should pay movie ticket prices to see characters populating their televisions.

In trying to make sure the DC Universe is omnipresent in culture (not to mention supplying sister companies to DC Studios like HBO and HBO Max with programming), this franchise is threatening to imitate the MCU’s Phase Four and Five problems in its earliest days. This relaunch of the DC characters in live-action needs delicate character, not immediately slathering big-screen superheroes all over the small screen. If Gunn and Safran want to make the DC Universe’s most prominent characters feel special and coherent to general audiences, then this multimedia shared universe approach must cease. The risk is too great and the rewards far too minimal to sabotage the DC Universe by stretching its storytelling across both Max and multiplexes.

Peacemaker Season 2 begins airing on HBO Max on August 21st.

DC's Superman and Lex Luthor

DC and James Gunn revealed the long awaited second trailer for Superman, and there were a multitude of elements and moments that caught people’s attention. One such moment was during a quick cut to Lex Luthor (played by Nicholas Hoult), and it happened to hit after Lois says “Did you consult with the President” to Clark. That led to a debate about whether that meant that Lex was actually the President in the film, but James Gunn took to Threads to clear things up.

When the question of whether Luthor was President came up on Threads, another fan said it appeared there are no origins in the movie. Gunn then replied to the post, and while he did confirm there are no origins in the movie, he also squashed the Lex theory, writing, “There are no origins but Lex is not President.”

We get several new looks at Lex in the newest trailer, including one particular sequence that takes place in the Fortress of Solitude. Lex and the Engineer are able to invade the Fortress, taking out some of Superman’s robotic allies but getting met head-on by Krypton. Luthor also couldn’t be happier about some of the backlash Superman is receiving in the governmental and political realm, which we learn about in the first few sequences in the trailer.

A Ruthless Lex

Hoult gave fans some context regarding his take on Lex Luthor at a previous Q&A, and he couldn’t be more excited to bring this ruthless version of Lex to this new DC movie universe. “The thing about this Lex, I think that was most exciting to me was being in a James Gunn universe. Like you said, so emotionally raw and powerful, but huge in the scope of the world and what he’s creating,” Hoult said.

“And I think with this Lex, I mean, obviously he’s smart and ruthless and he has to outmaneuver Superman on certain levels because he can’t match him in others,” Hoult said. “But there’s also something about this character, hopefully from my standpoint, where even though you perhaps don’t agree with his process, there’s an element where you can understand on some levels where he’s coming from and why perhaps what he’s pushing as his ideology is perhaps better for humanity.” You can find the official description for Superman below.

“Superman, DC Studios’ first feature film to hit the big screen, is set to soar into theaters worldwide this summer from Warner Bros. Pictures. In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.

The film stars David Corenswet (Twisters, Hollywood) in the dual role of Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult (the X-Men movies, Juror #2) as Lex Luthor. The film also stars Edi Gathegi (For All Mankind), Anthony Carrigan (Barry, Gotham), Nathan Fillion (the Guardians of the Galaxy films, The Suicide Squad), Isabela Merced (Alien Romulus), Skyler Gisondo (Licorice Pizza, Booksmart), Sara Sampaio (At Midnight), María Gabriela de Faría (The Moodys), Wendell Pierce (Selma, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan), Alan Tudyk (Andor), Pruitt Taylor Vince (Bird Box) and Neva Howell (Greedy People).”

Superman soars into theaters on July 11th.

Superman looking upset in a crowd.

Despite being a symbol of hope and justice, Superman is a pretty controversial superhero. He’s hard for some to relate to because of his Boy Scout attitude, and it doesn’t help matters that he rarely has to break a sweat because he’s almost always more powerful than his opponent. The lack of interest in the hero forces DC to constantly push out alternate takes, such as Injustice: Gods Among Us, which sees the Man of Steel break bad and use his power to force his beliefs onto others. However, there’s an even more notable Superman project that pushes the hero to his limits and makes him abandon his morals: Man of Steel.

Zack Snyder’s version of Superman, while different, is unbelievably polarizing, and the dark cloud around him is probably partly to blame for the DC Extended Universe never finding its footing. James Gunn can’t afford to follow that franchise up with anything but hopefulness, and the second trailer for Superman proves that’s exactly what’s on the menu.

The DCEU’s Superman Never Feels Confident

batman-arkham-knight.jpg

Unlike most Superman stories, Man of Steel features the character hiding from his heroic tendencies. He picks up odd jobs all over the world after losing his father, who struggled to support his son’s need to help people. Without a clear direction, Clark Kent seeks out the truth of his heritage, and after coming across a Kryptonian ship, he finds all the knowledge he needs. Unfortunately, his discovery invites the evil General Zod to Earth, and he plans to take it for himself. Clark won’t just stand by and let it happen, so he fights Zod and ends up taking his life. Zod leaves Clark no choice, but it doesn’t get Superman off on the right foot.

When Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice rolls around, Superman is much more active but rarely feels good about his actions. He returns to Metropolis to find news outlets and the government questioning his actions, and it really eats at him. Lex Luthor only pours more fuel on the fire by kidnapping his mother, Martha, and pitting him against another hero, Batman. Superman can’t take it anymore, and as he goes off to fight Batman, he doesn’t even believe his heroic alter-ego deserves to exist. Of course, Superman dies shortly after during his battle with Doomsday, and only then does the world realize his value. Things are different when the hero comes back to life in Justice League, but no matter how many appearances he makes, it’s hard to get the stink off the character.

James Gunn Wants Superman to Fight Back Against His Critics

The latest trailer for Gunn’s Superman movie isn’t all that different from the one for BvS. Lois Lane begins to hit the hero with hard questions about whether meddling in world affairs is really his place. Instead of just standing there and taking it, though, Superman fires back by saying that he’s going to save people if he thinks they’re in danger. He believes his moral code is strong enough to push him in the right direction, no matter what other people say. And he puts his money where his mouth is throughout the new look at the movie, throwing himself into danger without a second thought and confidently speaking to villains who mean to do harm. The new Superman refuses to brood, and it’s going to help him in the long run.

Obviously, a lot is riding on Superman. It’s the beginning of a new franchise, one that hopes to be around for a long time. However, even if it isn’t the jumping-off point that Iron Man was for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as long as the titular hero stays true to himself, never wavering in the face of adversity, it will be a major win for Gunn and Co. They can ride the wave he leaves in his wake to new and exciting places.

Superman hits theaters July 11, 2025.

Despite calling Earth home, Superman is an alien. He hails from the planet Krypton, and despite not remembering his time there, his heritage shapes so much of who he is. So, when the time comes to face a threat in the stars, he never hesitates, even if his opponent has the Anti-Life Equation or is a fellow Kryptonian hellbent on revenge. However, Superman’s missions can take him even further than a few planets away, with the hero frequently visiting alternate Earths and points outside of space and time. The Man of Steel even has access to a dimension that he uses as a prison in the comics, and James Gunn may be borrowing it for his latest movie.

The second trailer for Superman shows a lot in just a couple of minutes. There are quick shots of Guy Gardner in action, Clark Kent with his parents, and Lex Luthor just being the worst. The most interesting clip, though, features Lois Lane and Mister Terrific exiting a portal into a place that feels eerily familiar.

Superman Might Not Waste Any Time Bringing the Phantom Zone to the DCU

The world that Lois and Mister Terrific visit in Superman appears to be pretty desolate, and based on the expressions on their faces, it’s not somewhere they’re happy to be. That description fits the Phantom Zone pretty well, as it’s a wasteland that houses the worst of the worst from the galaxy. In the comics, Superman’s father, Jor-El, stumbles upon the “pocket universe” and hands the knowledge off to his son. Things don’t change much in live-action, with Jor-El imprisoning General Zod and his allies in the Phantom Zone in Richard Donner’s Superman before the Kryptonian high council does it all over again in Man of Steel.

General Zod is unlikely to play a major role in Gunn’s movie after a multiple-film run in the DC Extended Universe, but he’s not the only reason the Phantom Zone would appear. There’s a chance that Lex Luthor beats Jor-El to the punch in the DCU and throws the Man of Steel into the dimension, forcing Lois and Mister Terrific to retrieve Earth’s greatest hero. Maybe Superman sends his friends there to grab someone even stronger than whoever he’s up against. In any case, Gunn’s take on the Phantom Zone is sure to be memorable.

Without hard confirmation from Gunn, though, there’s a small chance that Lois and Mister Terrific’s destination isn’t the Kryptonian prison. That opens up a world of possibilities, as DC Comics has no shortage of strange locations.

Superman Could Be Sending Lois Lane and Mister Terrific to an Alternate Reality

Even if the Phantom Zone appears in Superman, it won’t be the first DC pocket dimension Gunn has introduced. In the first season of Peacemaker, the titular anti-hero’s father, White Dragon, has a door in his home that leads to a room full of other doors that lead to different pocket dimensions. While the show doesn’t spend much time explaining anything because there are more pressing matters with the Butterfly invasion, Season 2 will circle back. The trailer for the next outing shows Peacemaker going through one of the doors and coming face-to-face with another version of himself. It’s unclear how those events will play out, but based on the alternate Peacemaker’s attitude, he’s not looking to make friends.

Lois and Mister Terrific may find themselves staring down an alternate reality that has seen better days, which would reveal a lot about Lex Luthor. Nicholas Hoult’s version of the character clearly has a vendetta against Superman and will do anything to knock him down a peg. There’s no reason to doubt that, if he comes across pocket dimensions, he will use them to his advantage by unleashing all kinds of hell on the world. After all, a massive kaiju finds itself in Metropolis at some point in the movie, and it’s hard to believe that Luthor or anyone else could grow that in a lab.

Superman hits theaters on July 11th.

Does the suit make the (super) man? The Easter egg-packed Superman trailer that was released on Wednesday revealed the herculean tasks facing David Corenswet’s Man of Steel in the new movie, including saving Metropolis from a skyscraper-sized Kaiju, battles with the mysterious Ultraman and armored terrorist the Hammer of Boravia, a Fortress of Solitude showdown with the nanobot-blooded Engineer, Angela Spica (María Gabriela de Faría), and last but not least, the multitude of challenges from the envious and xenophobic Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult).

“Super… man,” Luthor intones over footage of armored LuthorCorp guards pummeling a captured Superman, weakened by the green Kryptonite-armed Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan). “He’s not a man. He’s an ‘it.'”

The Superman movie toyline has already revealed a (minor spoiler alert!) Yeti-type character and now (major spoiler alert!) what might be the film’s third act villain: Lex Luthor, clad in his green and purple battle suit.

Spin Master’s Superman LuthorCorp Lab set, now available exclusively at Target stores, contains a Lex Luthor action figure in “battle damage armor.” The six-figure set not only shows the Superman archvillain in his green-and-purple Warsuit from the comics, but also spoils an as-yet-unseen character: Baby Joey.

Here’s the toy’s official description, but be warned: it spoils plot details.

Dive into an epic Super Heroes adventure with the Luthorcorp Lab! This action-packed set includes 6 figures, featuring bold designs and exclusive details like battle damage armor. The lineup includes Superman, Mr. Terrific, Metamorpho, and Lex at 6-inch scale, plus exclusive 3-inch figures of Superman’s loyal sidekick Krypto and the mischievous Baby Joey. Join Superman as he takes on Lex Luthor in a daring slime-filled rescue mission! Use your Super Heroes skills to find the weak spot, break open the slime-filled cell, and set Krypto and Baby Joey free.

Lex Luthor’s Battle Armor: The Superman Warsuit

Past trailers have hinted at a battle between Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi) and LuthorCorp’s armored forces (seen wearing slimmer versions of the battle armor that Luthor donned for the first time in 1983’s Action Comics #544), but the action figure is the first look at Lex Luthor in the Warsuit.

In 1986’s The Man of Steel by John Byrne, a six-issue revamp of Superman’s origin story post-Crisis on Infinite Earths, Luthor created (but didn’t wear) the LexCorp-designed battle suit that had a fatal flaw: its unstable psionic control interface left anyone who wore it for more than an hour in a vegetative state.

In The Man of Steel #5, the battle suit was just the latest in one of Luthor’s many schemes to destroy Superman. (It was followed by LexCorp’s Project Changeling, Luthor’s attempt to clone Superman, who’s alien DNA caused the duplicate to devolve into the backwards, chalk-skinned Bizarro.) In 2004’s Superman/Batman #5, Luthor — then President Luthor — suited up in a battle armor forged from the firepits of Apokolips, the hellish planet ruled by Darkseid.

Who Is Baby Joey in Superman?

The green-skinned infant is Joseph “Joey” Mason, son of Rex Mason, a.k.a. Metamorpho. It seems that Lex leverages Baby Joey against his father, explaining why Metamorpho can be seen using his powers to subdue Superman with Kryptonite.

In the comics, Metamorpho is known as the “Element Man” due to his ability to transmute his body into any combination of chemical elements, which he can shape into virtually any form he can conceive. Rex saw his son for the first time in 1990’s Justice League Europe #11-12, where his archfoe and father-in-law Simon Stagg — the business tycoon father of Joey’s mother, Sapphire Stagg — used his grandson’s metamorph powers to produce a new fuel substitute.

Baby Joseph’s powers were like his father’s, but in reverse: whereas Rex’s elemental abilities allowed him to transmutate himself, the infant transmutated others with just a touch. Because Baby Joseph couldn’t control his powers, Stagg had him isolated in a specialized crib inside Stagg Industries (a building based in Metropolis in Superman).

Metamorpho traded blows with the Green Lantern Guy Gardner and then the Metal Men when he tried to free his son from Stagg’s control. It turned out that both Sapphire and her father were immune to Joseph’s transmutating touch, and the baby was left in the care of his mother and Stagg’s project canceled.

Rex was wracked with guilt over his son’s condition, and in the Mark Waid-penned 1993 Metamorpho run, Rex used his element-based powers to spring his son from Stagg. In the fourth and final issue, Joey touched a meteor fragment of the Orb of Ra, which originally gave Rex his powers. Because the boy was born with the opposite of his father’s powers, touching the meteor cancelled out the radiation — curing Joey of his condition.

Superman soars into theaters July 11.

Superman lifting a large object in the 2025 movie.

The Man of Steel has had difficulty finding his footing on the big screen. After coming out of the gate with two great movies featuring Christopher Reeve in the title role, the next couple of decades were a struggle. Superman Returns tried to bring back the feel of the original Richard Donner movies, but it failed to grow into anything worth building on. Zack Snyder took another crack at the hero with Man of Steel, and while it was the jumping-off point for the DC Extended Universe, the whole franchise quickly went off the rails, forcing Warner Bros. to go back to the drawing board. The next big idea was to recruit James Gunn to start a new universe, one he would need Superman to help usher in.

Gunn’s vision is now becoming clear, with Superman‘s marketing showing how the movie will focus on the hero’s selflessness. But no Gunn project is complete without some great jokes, and as the latest trailer for Superman proves, it’s got one in the influencer bit with Eve Teschmacher.

Even Superman Can’t Hide From the Camera in the DC Universe

A good chunk of Superman‘s latest trailer focuses on the public’s perception of the hero. Lois Lane mentions that he’s the subject of controversy because he flies all over the world and solves conflicts without getting prior approval. He rebukes the idea that he needs permission to save people because he believes that’s his calling. Wherever there is danger, he will go, and anyone who has a problem with it can get over it. However, citizens can’t seem to make up their minds about him. Some help him in the street when he falls, while others throw cans at his head. The whiplash clearly leaves the hero feeling conflicted, and it doesn’t help that some people only want to use him to boost their own profile.

Near the end of the trailer, as Superman battles the Hammer of Boravia in Metropolis, Sara Sampaio’s character, Eve Teschmacher, pulls out her phone and takes a selfie with the fight in the background. The hilarious moment helps cut the tension in the trailer, but it also reveals a lot about Teschmacher’s role in Superman and how she may just be another in a long line of characters Gunn has helped hit their stride.

James Gunn Helps Little-Known Characters Stand Out in a Crowd

Making her first appearance in Donner’s original Superman movie, Teschmacher is best known as one of Lex Luthor’s many cronies. She doesn’t get along with her boss initially, but things change over the years, with her subsequent live-action appearances making her more confident and formidable. However, Teschmacher is far from a household name, which means Gunn can mold her into anything he wants. He did that plenty during his time with Marvel Studios since the franchise he built, Guardians of the Galaxy, focused on nothing but C and D-list comic book characters. And even after he made the jump to DC, he made Peacemaker likable enough that he got his own solo show, which survived the collapse of the DCEU.

Clearly, Superman‘s Teschmacher is going to be an entirely new take on the character that puts her in the position of influencer in a world that’s full of notable events to cover. She’s sure to be the butt of a couple jokes and drop a few burns of her own, but that doesn’t mean she’ll be nothing but comedic relief. Gunn is an expert at blending comedy with real emotion, and whether it’s in Superman or a future DC project, it feels like a foregone conclusion that Teschmacher will eventually drop her facade and reveal her true colors. Until she does, though, there’s no reason to toss hate at the character, as she’s just a reflection of how Gunn sees the social media landscape, especially when it comes to tackling major topics.

Superman hits theaters on July 11, 2025.

Superman and Krypto in the Fortress of Solitude

A tie-in toy for this summer’s Superman spoils a surprising enemy Superman will face off against, teasing what should be an exciting fight. As spotted by the X account DCU Superman News, the officially licensed action figure set depicts a battle that takes place in the Fortress of Solitude. Superman and Krypto are going up against some kind of creature that resembles the wampa from The Empire Strikes Back. The toy packaging illustrates various ways people can play with the toys, depicting Superman flying into battle, fighting the creature, and then celebrating a hard-earned victory.

The toy box does not indicate what the creature exactly is. In the comments on the X post, one person theorizes it could be something from Superman’s zoo that gets unleashed in the Fortress of Solitude. Check out the image in the space below:

Whatever this creature is, it hasn’t been spotlighted in Superman promotional materials to this point, even though the Fortress of Solitude itself has been highlighted throughout marketing. A special five-minute preview released in early April showcased a scene where Krypto brings Superman back to the Fortress so he can be treated for injuries suffered in a fight.

This Fortress of Solitude creature is yet another enemy Kal-El will have to face in Superman. Marketing has highlighted various villains in the film, including Lex Luthor, the Hammer of Boravia and more. Unsurprisingly, Superman trailers have been sure to emphasize the blockbuster’s action sequences.

Considering how tight DC Studios can be about spoilers, it’s a little surprising the Fortress of Solitude creature was revealed through a toy set and not proper footage from the film itself. Perhaps, as Warner Bros. really revs up the Superman marketing machine over the next couple of months, future TV spots and trailers could provide a glimpse of this showdown. It’ll be interesting to see how the creature fits into the movie. Some fans might not know that in the source material, Superman has made a habit of rescuing beings from other doomed worlds, giving them a place to live in the Fortress of Solitude. Superman eschews the character’s origin story and picks up when he’s already an established hero, so he might have accumulated quite the collection of alien animals, including this creature.

Whether there’s a zoo in the Fortress of Solitude or not, the battle between Superman and the mysterious creature should be a standout set piece in the film. Notably, the toy packaging indicates the creature’s arm pops off, suggesting that Superman needs to rip the limb out in order to get an upper hand in the fight. The showdown probably won’t factor too heavily into Superman‘s plot, but it could shed light and context on the character, showing what he’s up to when he isn’t trying to thwart Lex Luthor’s plans. Or maybe Lex is the mastermind behind the creature attack, unleashing it in the Fortress of Solitude himself.

The latest trailer for DC Studios’ upcoming Superman film has offered audiences the clearest view yet of the hero Metamorpho, the Element Man, portrayed by Anthony Carrigan. Fans of the classic DC Comics character will immediately recognize a striking comics-accurate depiction, showcasing Metamorpho’s unique patchwork appearance of various elemental textures and colors. In the brief but revealing footage, Metamorpho is seen within a high-tech glass cell he’s sharing with Superman (David Corenswet), who is shown being subdued by armored guards. The scene strongly implies both heroes are captives of a formidable adversary, likely Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), while also hinting at a world where superpowered individuals are broadly known and can be contained.

Metamorpho, whose real name is Rex Mason, was created by writer Bob Haney and artist Ramona Fradon, first appearing in The Brave and the Bold #57 in 1965. Mason was an adventurer hired by the wealthy industrialist Simon Stagg to retrieve a mystical Egyptian artifact known as the Orb of Ra. Deep within a pyramid, Mason was betrayed by Stagg’s brutish bodyguard, Java, and exposed to the radiation of an ancient meteorite from which the Orb was fashioned. This exposure transformed him into Metamorpho, a being with the astonishing ability to transmute his body into any element or combination of elements found in the human body, and eventually, any element on the periodic table. His powers also include shapeshifting, elasticity, enhanced durability, and the ability to alter the chemical composition of his form, allowing him to create complex compounds, acids, or gases. Despite his immense power, Metamorpho often views his condition as a curse due to his freakish appearance, frequently longing for a cure.

The new Superman trailer further underscores that the film is set in a world already teeming with established heroes by showcasing other classic DC metahumans. The footage also offers a clearer glimpse at Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, one of Earth’s Green Lanterns, known for his abrasive personality. Isabela Merced is also featured as Hawkgirl, a winged warrior with a long and storied DC legacy. Additionally, Edi Gathegi appears as Michael Holt, the brilliant inventor and hero known as Mister Terrific. The trailer also provides a better look at María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica, The Engineer, a character whose body is composed of liquid metal nanotechnology and is a member of The Authority. Angela’s powers are showcased for the first time in two action scenes, one of them involving Krypto, the Superdog.

What We Know About James Gunn’s Superman

James Gunn’s Superman, which he both wrote and directed, is poised to be the foundational film for the new DC Universe. According to the co-heads of DC Studios Gunn and DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran, this iteration of the Man of Steel aims to present a version of the character that embodies “truth, justice, and the American way,” with a strong emphasis on “kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old-fashioned.” The story will focus on Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian origins with his human upbringing in Smallville, Kansas, under the care of his adoptive parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent (portrayed by Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell, respectively). David Corenswet’s Clark Kent is depicted as being in his mid-twenties, already operating as Superman and working as a journalist for the Daily Planet. This Superman is described as being “madly in love” with his colleague Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) and will interact with other established superheroes who perceive him as somewhat naive. The film draws thematic and narrative inspiration from various comic book storylines, including the celebrated All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely.

The supporting cast is extensive, reflecting a DC Universe rich with characters. The Daily Planet newsroom will also feature Skyler Gisondo as photographer Jimmy Olsen and Wendell Pierce as Editor-in-Chief Perry White. Lex Luthor’s operations will include Sara Sampaio as his assistant, Eve Teschmacher, and Terence Rosemore as Otis, classic characters coming from different corners of the Superman mythos. Finally, Sean Gunn has been cast as the manipulative businessman Maxwell Lord, and Frank Grillo will appear as Rick Flag Sr before taking a more prominent live-action role in Season 2 of Peacemaker. There is also anticipation that Milly Alcock might make her debut as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl in this film, ahead of her standalone project, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

Superman is scheduled to fly into theaters on July 11th.

The new Superman trailer is as action-packed as it is star-studded, so it’s easy to miss an Easter egg or two — or a dozen. DC Studios dropped the official first trailer for the James Gunn-helmed reboot on Wednesday, bringing with it new looks at David Corenswet’s Man of Steel, Rachel Brosnahan’s intrepid Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult’s archvillain Lex Luthor.

Over its three-minute run time, the new trailer also offers glimpses of the Justice Gang — a trio of corporate-sponsored superheroes, which includes Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), Hakwgirl (Isabela Merced), and the Green Lantern Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion) — as well as the mysterious Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan). But there’s another secretive cameo that is easily missed.

As Clark Kent pals around with Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo) at The Daily Planet offices, a computer monitor shows what appears to be a photo of none other than J’onn J’onnz, the Martian Manhunter. Like the Last Son of Krypton, the Green Martian from Mars made the Earth his home after a plague wiped out the Martian race, including his wife and daughter.

Initially introduced as John Jones, “Manhunter from Mars,” in the pages of the Batman-fronted Detective Comics #225 in 1955, the alien was teleported to Earth by Prof. Mark Erdel, and used his chameleon-like powers to shapeshift into human form. Stranded on Earth, J’onn J’onnz disguised himself as an Earthman, took the name “John Jones,” and became a crime-fighting detective.

In 1960’s The Brave and the Bold #28, which formed the Justice League, J’onn J’onnz became a founding member alongside Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, the Flash (Barry Allen), and Green Lantern (Hal Jordan). The Big Seven, as they would come to be known, first banded together to battle the starfish-like alien Starro (the would-be conqueror and villain from Gunn’s The Suicide Squad).

Martian Manhunter and the JLa

More modern versions of the Martian Manhunter made J’onn J’onnz a member of the Maxwell Lord-backed Justice League International alongside the Guy Gardner Green Lantern, and during the New 52 relaunch in 2011, J’onn J’onnz was a member of the secret police force Stormwatch with Angela Spica, a.k.a. the Engineer — yet another character that can be seen in Superman, played by María Gabriela de Faría.

Gunn seemingly hinted at the Martian Manhunter last year when he shared a photo of Chocos cookies, the Oreo-like sandwich cookie that is famously J’onn J’onnz’s favorite snack in the comics. Not only can Chocos advertisements be spotted in Superman, but the Chocos office is the level of the LordTech building that comes under attack from the Hammer of Boravia. (The trailer shows the armored terrorist attacking LordTech, one of Metropolis’ major companies alongside Stagg Industries and LuthorCorp.)

DC Studios’ Superman — starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, María Gabriela de Faría, Wendell Pierce, Alan Tudyk, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Neva Howell, and Frank Grillo — opens only in theaters on July 11.

A fictional rock band called The Mighty Crabjoys is currently the most consistent connective tissue throughout the DCU. This group was first referenced in Creature Commandos late last year, and are expected to get a shoutout in Peacemaker Season 2 later this summer. The new Superman trailer that dropped on Wednesday featured our third Mighty Crabjoys sighting, and while it was subtle, fans picked up on it quickly. It’s hard to tell if this group is meant to stay in the background as an Easter egg, or if their significance is being built up for a reason. We may not find out for sure until Superman hits theaters on July 11th, followed by Peacemaker Season 2 streaming on August 21st.

Eagle-eyed fans were quick to spot The Mighty Crabjoys in Wednesday’s Superman trailer. They showed up at the very end of the trailer, as Superman was lying on his bed with Krypto the Superdog lying on his chest. A poster for the band was stuck on the wall above them — one of the many hints that this was his childhood bedroom. The idea that this band has been active since Clark Kent was young also raises questions about how popular and influential they are.

For those unaware, The Mighty Crabjoys were first introduced to the DCU in Creature Commandos Episode 2, “The Tourmaline Necklace.” There, Eric Frankenstein was wearing a tank top with the band’s name and logo on it as he fought with the Bride. They also made a brief appearance in the trailer for Peacemaker Season 2, where they have a prominent billboard in the city. Someone leaps past it as they jump from one building to another, smashing through a window.

Fans have dutifully gathered all the pieces of this puzzle, but they are at a complete loss as to how to put them together. Social media is filling with posts about The Mighty Crabjoys, with many praising this as a bit of subtle worldbuilding and others speculating that it might be a hint at the introduction of more characters down the line. Finding out that Superman’s favorite band is made up of heroes or villains would be pretty interesting, though it’s not necessary based on what we’ve seen so far.

Of course, many fans are expecting director and DC Studios co-executive James Gunn to explain this Easter egg eventually. The filmmaker is very open with fans and he often clues them in on these kinds of gags eventually. He may be waiting for the right time to tell us how this band came into the DCU.

Superman hits theaters on July 11th. Creature Commandos is streaming now on Max — soon to be re-branded HBO Max — while Peacemaker Season 2 will premiere there on August 21st.

Look, up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s the new Superman trailer! On Wednesday, DC Studios debuted the first full-length trailer for James Gunn’s Superman, and it packs over a dozen Easter eggs, comic book references, nods — and even a hidden cameo by a major Justice League superhero — into its three-minute run time. With the newly-imagined DC Universe officially getting up, up and away when Superman soars into theaters on July 11, Gunn has included details connecting the film to everything from the HBO Max series Creature Commandos and Peacemaker to The Authority, one of the first films announced for the new DCU.

The new footage establishes that The Daily Planet reporters Clark Kent (David Corenswet) and Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) are an item, and she’s already aware of his alter-ego by the time the Man of Steel sits down for an exclusive interview. The citizens of Metropolis have mostly embraced Superman — something that makes the other Man of Tomorrow, egomaniacal sociopath and LexCorp CEO Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), seek to destroy the costume-clad alien for becoming “the focal point of the entire world’s conversation.”

Here, ComicBook breaks down over a dozen of the Superman trailer Easter eggs and references spotted in the trailer.

LordTech and the Justice Gang

LordTech is a Metropolis-based technology company bankrolled by Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn), who will first appear in Superman ahead of his role in Peacemaker season 2.

The tech mogul sponsors the “Justice Gang,” as revealed by the LordTech symbol on the uniforms worn by corporate superheroes Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), and the Green Lantern Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion). Lois uses a LordTech brand voice recorder in her sitdown with Superman, and the LordTech building is the skyscraper that Superman soars over in his battle with the Hammer of Boravia (more on that below).

Lord’s counterpart in the comics was a wealthy entrepreneur who first announced himself as the official press liaison of the newly-reformed Justice League of America, and starting with Justice League International #7, retrofitted the team into a United Nations-sanctioned international peace-keeping force. Guy Gardner was an original member of the JLI, which included the likes of Batman, Martian Manhunter, and the Ted Kord Blue Beetle.

Stagg Industries

Another major company in the DC Universe, Stagg Industries (sometimes called Stagg Enterprises or Stagg International in the comics) is the company of tycoon Simon Stagg.

Stagg is the archvillain of Rex Mason, a.k.a. Metamorpho the Element Man, and the father of his longtime love interest, Sapphire Stagg. In the comics, Stagg is responsible for the turn of events that exposed soldier of fortune Rex to the radioactive meteor that turned him into Metamorpho, a metahuman with the ability to rearrange his molecules into any combination of chemical elements and shape them into any form he can conceive.

Rick Flag Sr.

The trailer seems to suggest that Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo) has been promoted to the Secretary of Defense. Grillo’s General Flag first appeared in the Gunn-penned animated series Creature Commandos as the leader of A.R.G.U.S. Director Amanda Waller’s (Viola Davis) replacement for Task Force X, a team of monsters from Belle Reve’s Non-Human Internment Division. Flag’s son, Colonel Rick Flag (played by Joel Kinnaman in 2016’s Suicide Squad and Gunn’s 2021 film The Suicide Squad), was killed during a mission to Corto Maltese.

Gunn has confirmed that the events of The Suicide Squad are semi-canon to the new DCU. Grillo’s Flag Sr. will next return in Peacemaker season 2 (also set in the DCU), and will presumably confront the man responsible for his son’s death: Christopher Smith, AKA Peacemaker (John Cena). But first, Flag Sr. is apparently tasked with arresting Superman, as shown in the trailer.

The Engineer and Ultraman

Captured by the Army, Superman is flanked by Flag Sr. and two super-powered people in black. The first is Angela Spica (María Gabriela de Faría), a member of the super-team The Authority. As the Engineer, Spica can interface with any machine and the Nanomachines in her body give her the ability to shapeshift into liquid metal, making her able to create any object she can imagine (like the whirring hand blades she’s seen wielding in Superman’s Fortress of Solitude).

The masked mystery man might Ultraman, as suggested by the U-shaped emblem resembling that of his comic counterpart. Basically the evil Superman, most versions of Ultraman hail from Earth-3 as a member of the Crime Syndicate (an evil Justice League). Whereas Superman is weakened by Kryptonite, Ultraman is empowered by it; Superman’s powers are fueled by the sun, which can harm Ultraman (possibly explaining the full-body costume).

Kryptonite

It seems that Ultraman and the Engineer hand over the captured Superman to Lex, who then imprisons the alien alongside metahumans like Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan). He can be seen using his transmutation abilities to turn his right hand into green Kryptonite, which causes Superman to become vulnerable to assault from Lex’s armored guards (as identified by the “LC,” or LuthorCorp, logo on their uniforms).

Black Orchid

Next to Superman’s cell is a woman wearing a distinctive black and pink dress. This could be Susan Linden, a lesser-known character with ties to Lex Luthor in the comics who first appeared in 1973’s Adventure Comics #428. The woman known as Black Orchid grew up in the suburbs of Metropolis and married Carl Thorne, a career criminal and arms trafficker for the industrialist Lex Luthor.

When Thorne double-crossed Luthor and stole a shipment of terrorist weapons, he killed his wife for turning him in to the police. When botanist Philip Sylvian used Susan’s genetic material as part of his experiments to create a race of hybrid human-plant people, she was reborn as Black Orchid, a costumed crusader who frequently opposed Luthor.

Superman Creators

Metropolis is littered with nods to DC Comics creators. Superman is arrested on Waid St., a reference to comic book creator Mark Waid, writer of The Flash run starring Wally West and 1993’s Metamorpho comic run. Most famously, Waid wrote Kingdom Come, the 1996 storyline that inspired Superman’s symbol in the new movie, and Superman: Birthright, an update of Superman’s origin story.

Elsewhere, signage is visible for Swan’s Books store, a nod to Curt Swan, famed artist on such titles as Action Comics starring Superman, Adventure Comics starring Superboy, Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen, and the self-titled Superman and Superboy series. When Superman saves a little girl outside Swan’s Books, it’s on Ross Street — acknowledging Kingdom Come artist Alex Ross.

Swan’s Books is located at 712 N. Reeves Ave., a reference to actor George Reeves, who played the Man of Steel in the 1950s Adventures of Superman TV series.

Big Belly Burger

Superman’s battle with a skyscraper-sized Kaiju takes place above a billboard for Big Belly Burger, the fictional fast food chain that originated in 1988’s Adventures of Superman #441 by John Byrne (The Man of Steel) and Jerry Ordway (Crisis on Infinite Earths). In “The Tiny Terror of Tinseltown,” Superman fought the Big Belly mascot when the giant statue was magically animated by Mr. Mxyzptlk, a mischievous imp from the Fifth Dimension.

In the comics, Big Belly was a subsidiary of LexCorp, the conglomerate based in the New Troy borough of Metropolis. The brand appeared often in The CW Arrowverse series Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl, and has had “cameos” in everything from 2023’s Blue Beetle movie (set in the DC Extended Universe) to the Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League video game.

Metropolis Meteors

Superman and Mister Terrific can be seen fighting Ultraman and the Engineer in a baseball stadium that is home to the Metropolis Meteors baseball team, which first appeared in an issue of 1973’s Strange Sports Stories (co-penciled by Curt Swan and Dick Giordano).

Although the team was initially identified as the play-off winners of the Eastern League in Strange Sports Stories #1 (with no mention of Metropolis), the Metropolis-based Meteors have appeared in everything from an episode Superman: The Animated Series and tie-in comic Superman Adventures. Issue #13 paid homage to Strange Sports Stories and had Superman battle an alien in the stadium home to the Metropolis Meteors.

Smallville Giants and The Mighty Crabjoys

When Superman returns to the Kent family farm in Smallville, Kansas, reuniting with his adoptive parents Jonathan (Pruitt Taylor Vince) and Martha Kent (Neva Howell) with Lois and Krypto the Superdog in tow, we can see a pennant for the Smallville Giants. In The Man of Steel comic by John Byrne, Clark Kent was a star football player for the Smallville High School football team: the Smallville Giants. The pennant even has the team’s colors of orange and yellow as seen in 1986’s The Man of Steel #1.

Clark’s childhood bedroom also has a poster for The Mighty Crabjoys, a fictional band that is, apparently, pretty popular in the DCU. Frankenstein, voiced by David Harbour, was shown wearing a Mighty Crabjoys band T-shirt in the Creature Commandos episode “The Tourmaline Necklace,” and a billboard for the band is visible in the Peacemaker season 2 trailer.

Jim Lee’s Superman, Man of Tomorrow

At The Daily Planet offices, we get a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it glimpse at a cork bulletin board that is decorated with Superman memorabilia. Posted to the board is a card of artist Jim Lee’s iconic cover for 2004’s Superman (Vol. 2) #204, the first issue of the 12-part Superman: For Tomorrow storyline written by Brian Azzarello and penciled by Lee. The fan-favorite artist also currently serves as Chief Creative Officer and Publisher of DC Comics.

Martian Manhunter

left: martian manhunter dcu cameo? right: martian manhunter art by alex ross

Speaking of “blink and you’ll miss it,” when Clark pals around with Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo), a glimpse at the boyish Daily Planet photographer’s computer screen shows what appears to be the J’onn J’onnz, the Martian Manhunter. The shape-shifting Green Martian from Mars is one of the original founders of the Justice League, and one of the “Big Seven” members alongside Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, and Aquaman.

The Hammer of Boravia

The trailer highlights a brawl with the mysterious Hammer of Boravia. A Daily Planet article published by none other than mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent reveals the Hammer’s attack is a response to “recent political interventions in Boravia by Superman,” a major plot point in the trailer.

“This vengeful expedition turned into a terrorist assault on American soil, hospitalizing 22 Metropolis citizens,” the article reads. “Boravia has been the source of numerous headlines worldwide in recent weeks as it invaded its neighboring country Jarhanpur, only for the brief war to be swiftly ended by the Superman. The President of Boravia, Vasil Glarkos, maintains the Hammer of Boravia is not a representative of the national government, but rather an independent vigilante.”

The report goes on to reveal that the Hammer of Boravia’s “ocular laser strike” (the laser vision shown leveling a floor of a building) damages the offices of Chocos, makers of the sandwich cookie that is famously a favorite of J’onn J’onnz in the comics. Jarhanpur, by the way, is the neighboring country of Boravia and was first name-dropped in Creature Commandos

The Hammer of Boravia is an original character with no exact counterpart in the comics. However, there is a little-known hammer-themed Super-foe called Jackhammer — real name Jack Hammersmith — who donned a golden battle suit of armor to fight the Man of Steel in 1982’s Action Comics #537.

The Hammer of Boravia bears a striking resemblance to the Lexo-Suit battle armor that John Corben (later the Kryptonite-powered cyborg supervillain Metallo) pilots as the first villain of 1996’s Superman: The Animated Series. In part three of the series premiere, “The Last Son of Krypton,” Superman saves Lois from the stolen Lexo-Skel Suit 5000 when she investigates a war-profiting plot that involves the fictional foreign country Kaznia and none other than Lex Luthor.

DC Studios’ Superman soars into theaters July 11.

Comic book adaptations often find ways to pay tribute to the artists and writers behind their source material, and the new trailer for Superman features a shout-out to legendary writer Mark Waid. At the 46-second mark, there’s a shot where Superman is being perp-walked through the streets with his hands behind his back. The sign over his head marks “Waid Street,” though it’s unclear which city he’s supposed to be in at the time. Mark Waid is best known for his work at DC Comics, including some iconic Superman stories. So far, Waid has not commented publicly on this Easter egg, but fans have already taken notice.

Wednesday’s new trailer for Superman showed the Man of Steel in custody, though the circumstances aren’t clear. We see Superman walking across Waid Street with his hands bound, flanked by Rick Flag (Frank Grillo) and Angela Spica, The Engineer (María Gabriela de Faría), with Ultraman keeping a firm grip on his cuffs. They’re heading into some kind of large public building, but before they can get there, we see The Engineer slamming Superman’s face into the pavement.

This might all happen in Metropolis itself, since a fictional city seems like the best place to add a fictional street name. They could be headed into an office or a lab for LuthorCorp, or perhaps a company run by Maxwell Lord. It could also be a courthouse or TV studio, as the villains seem intent on destroying Superman’s public good will.

Whatever the case, a street name for Waid is a fitting nod to the writer’s contributions to DC Comics lore. When it comes to Superman, Waid’s first big claim to fame was the graphic novel Kingdom Come published in 1996, which explored the future of the DC universe and the place of its biggest heroes in it. He was later credited with reviving the popularity of the Justice League, and in 2003 Waid took on an individual Superman project with the limited series Superman: Birthright.

Easter eggs like this are pretty common for comic book adaptations, and are a great reminder of where the these stories started and a fitting honor the people who created them. Unlike some other comic creators, Waid has never taken a Hollywood credit as a writer, producer, or consultant, though it’s not clear if this is by choice or not. Superman hits theaters on July 11th, kicking off the DCU’s live-action storyline in earnest

A character that has been missing from previous DC movies finally makes an appearance in the latest Superman trailer. With Superman being the first official movie of James Gunn’s new DC Universe, all eyes will be on the project not only for its storytelling, but also for what Easter eggs will be included. Superman will reintroduce audiences to Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Lex Luthor, along with heroes like Mister Terrific, Hawkgirl, Guy Gardner, and Metamorpho. But when it comes to characters with close ties to Clark Kent/Superman, the ones often overlooked are his parents. After seeing Jonathan Kent in previous trailers, today’s new trailer for Superman officially reveals his mother, Martha Kent.

Superman’s adopted mother makes an appearance around the 2:20 mark in the official Superman trailer. Played by Neva Howell, Martha tells Clark Kent that she cleaned his boots and she’ll go gather them for him. It comes during a scene at the Kent Farm in Smallville, where we can also see Jonathan Kent (Pruitt Taylor Vince). This is the only time we get to see Martha Kent in Superman‘s new trailer, aside from a short shot of her rubbing Superman’s head while he’s unconscious in bed.

Fans of the DC Extended Universe will remember that the name “Martha” became a controversial word after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The fight between the Dark Knight and Man of Steel only came to an end when Batman was about to deliver the killing blow with a Kryptonite spear. Superman yells out to Batman to “find Martha,” which also happens to be the name of Batman’s mother. Batman flashes back to his parents’ deaths, allowing Lois Lane time to run in and tell Batman that Superman’s mother is named Martha. Somehow, this is enough to let the two heroes bond and bring their rivalry to an end.

The Superman trailer also fixes a key scene that caused backlash amongst fans. Some fans were annoyed that Superman reacted when getting hit in the head by a can thrown by a protester. His head moved slightly in earlier footage, and most notably, he blinks. Some fans felt like a superhero who has the power to have bullets bounce right off him probably shouldn’t be fazed by a tin can. It’s a minor detail that likely wouldn’t have been a big deal after the film’s release, but it seems that scene has been tweaked. The new Superman trailer now has the Man of Steel not reacting at all to the can bouncing off his head.

It’s possible that there were numerous takes of the scene in question, or special effects are in play. Either way, James Gunn appears to be exercising a lot of care with Superman, understanding how important he is as a symbol to his legion of fans. We’ll have to wait for Superman to land in theaters to see what the final product of the scene looks like.

Superman “tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas,” according to the synopsis. “He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”

Opening in theaters on July 11th, Superman stars David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Frank Grillo, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, María Gabriela de Faría, Wendell Pierce, Alan Tudyk, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Neva Howell, and Sean Gunn.

Superman‘s official trailer has the world looking, and there are plenty of new questions that have come with the latest footage from James Gunn’s DC Universe reboot film. Oddly enough, one of the biggest questions that Superman still hasn’t clearly answered is who the main villain is of the film? It’s not that Gunn is aping the approach of other superhero filmmakers and holding back any hint of his big bad in the marketing – quite the opposite, in fact. Gunn has thrown so many potential enemies at his Superman (David Corenswet) that it’s hard to know for sure which one is the main threat.

Who is the Main Villain of Superman?

The full trailer for Superman does some significant work of conveying the kind of story that Gunn is telling in his film, and ergo, we now have a better sense of how various nefarious elements fit in. It’s no surprise that Superman’s rivalry with Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) is alive and well, and that in the macro sense, that rivalry between an egomanical genius who doesn’t want to feel inferior to a god-like (but very “human”) being will be the core of the film. So, where does that leave the variety of giant monsters and other superpowered beings we see Superman and his allies battling, not to mention geopolitical and military factions?

DC Studios

The latest footage from Superman gives a first taste of Angela Spica, aka “The Engineer” (María Gabriela de Faría), a member of the DC team “The Authority” who wields nanotech powers; other shots from the trailer show her clearly working with Lex, as well as Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo) from the Creature Commandos animated series, and the mysterious brute in the black suit and masked helmet, who seems to share Superman’s powers. While Flag is a wild card, we see the Engineer and the brute (and various goons in Lexcorp armor) engaged in throwdown swith Superman, as well as the heroes working for Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn), like Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi) Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced) and Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion). Clearly the “Superman vs. Lex” dynamic we know from previous movies will take on a much bigger form, as both men see factions form around them.

The monsters we see in the film (namely a giant, colorful Kaiju and the giant energy-based eye-in-the-sky Superman heads out to battle) seem like they will be more minor or side-quest threats that Superman has to face – possibly part of a running motif in the film about how the hero spends his days solving a range of problems both minor (saving cats from trees, shielding a shield from falling debris) and major (averting entire wars, defeating giant monsters). In fact, the more we see of the film, the more it seems like the giant energy eye monster could be the sort of second act battle that leaves Superman gravely injured; thereby seeking healing in the Fortress of Solitude (as seen in the first teaser), and inadvertently leading Luthor and his forces to that secret location. In other words, whereas many superhero movies try to make a giant monster their third act climax, it’ll be just another ‘day in the life’ sequence for Superman. Which may low-key be a statement from Gunn, in and of itself.

Does Superman Have A Secret Villain?

DC STudios

Who is the guy in the black suit? There are plenty of theories going around the Internet, the most popular being it’s Gunn’s version of a Superman clone like Bizarro (or a proper take on something like “Nuclear Man” from Superman IV). The brute’s ability to go toe-to-toe with Superman is surprising, and at some point, you have to figure that suit is getting peeled off for some kind of reveal.

Later on in the Superman trailer, we get the story reveal that some kind of dimensional portal device will be involved, leading to Superman doing battle (and possibly a Lois rescue) within a strange realm that looks like the remains of a different reality of the DC Multiverse, following an incursion. The figure Superman is flying towards is purposefully obscured, but he is definitely firing some kind of eye beam back at the Man of Steel. Theories will run rampant as to what’s happening here (is this the DCU Phantom Zone? Is that Zod? Would Gunn go so far as teasing Darkseid? Is this Superman banishing that aforementioned clone?); however, it’s clear at this point that the conflict in Superman is going to be much wider and wide-ranging than we may have initially thought.

Superman hits theaters on July 11th.

The brand new Superman trailer seems to be teasing that a controversial figure in the DC universe is the President of the United States. The DC universe is one that it is incredibly vast and it feels like just about every character lives in a pretty different world. Batman lives in the dreary Gotham City, while Superman lives in the more lively Metropolis. They feel world’s apart, but they are all under the same universe. Their stark differences is what makes the crossover events so much more interesting. Characters like Batman and Superman are yin and yang, complete opposites that bring out the best each in other and work well as a team for a common goal.

One common goal they often share is stopping the conniving, evil billionaire known as Lex Luthor. The villain is nothing more than flesh and blood, unlike many of his foes. All he really possesses is political power, intelligence, and money. It allows him to be a unique threat as he could, in theory, just be beaten with a few punches, but he often holds the cards by being a step ahead of his enemies or by being too important to touch. He’s even been the President of the United States in the DC universe before and it seems like James Gunn may take advantage of that idea on the big screen.

Is Lex Luthor the President in Superman?

superman (2025)

At the beginning of the latest Superman trailer, Lois Lane gets permission from Clark to do an on the record interview with his superhero alter ego, Superman. She begins pressing him about how he’s in hot water with the public over the ways he gets involved with different catastrophes, including war. Although Superman believes he stopped a war, others see it as him illegally interfering. Lois then asks Superman if he consulted with the President of the United States before entering a foreign country and the trailer cuts to Lex Luthor in a very unsubtle way.

It could just be a coincidence, but it does raise the question of if Lex Luthor is already President in Superman. It seems somewhat unlikely given all the villainous things we see him doing in the trailers, including invading the Fortress of Solitude. Would the President have time to do that (or the ability to without arousing suspicion?), it’s hard to say. It is a heightened comic book world, but it may be just a step past unbelievable. However, it wouldn’t be surprising if we see the events of Superman lead into Lex’s campaign to become the President.

Perhaps he will be the President in a future movie and will use his political power to try and take down Superman. Only time will tell, but it certainly seems like James Gunn and the creative team behind the movie are trying to plant that seed in the minds of audiences around the world.

Superman hits theaters on July 11th. Do you want to see Lex Luthor as President? Let me know in the comments.

The brand new Superman trailer has made a tweak to a scene that caused some backlash the first time around. There are few characters as iconic as Superman. The Man of Steel has one of the most recognizable symbols of all-time and his bright red and blue costume makes him pop off the screen and pages of comic books. He’s a foundational character for the superhero genre and yet, he has been notably absent from the big screen for some time now. Although Superman’s last appearance on screen was Black Adam, it was a very brief cameo in a movie that wasn’t very well received.

People have been yearning for a new solo Superman movie for a decade now and now, it’s finally happening. James Gunn is rebooting Superman for the big screen as part of his new DC universe and it won’t be another origin story. Clark Kent has already donned the cape in this version, but it seems to still be somewhat early days for him as the world is coming to terms with what Superman’s role should be. Should he stand by and let the world melt down? Should he step in? What consequences are there to being a hero? These are questions all posed by the latest Superman trailer, which has a lot to break down.

Superman Trailer Changes a Key Scene After Fan Backlash

While there are surely all kinds of Easter eggs and big clues for the story in the Superman trailer, it seems like James Gunn and crew may have used this trailer to address a talking point from the first Superman trailer. Some fans were annoyed that Superman reacted when getting hit in the head by a can thrown by some kind of protestor. His head move sightly and most notably, he blinks. Some felt like a superhero that has the power to have bullets bounce right off of him probably shouldn’t be fazed by a tin can. It’s a minor detail that likely wouldn’t have been a big deal after the film’s release, but it seems that scene has been tweaked.

Superman‘s latest trailer has made it so that when he gets hit by the can, he doesn’t react at all. It’s likely they used a totally different take here or maybe there’s some invisible special effects work happening to remove the blink. Either way, it seems like James Gunn is exercising a lot of care with Superman. It’s possible this was always the plan for the final cut of Superman, but they were just using the footage that they had originally, but it does feel like a more direct response to the trailer. Either way, it’s likely this little touch will make its way into the final version of the movie as the finishing touches get added on over the coming weeks.

Superman will release in theaters on July 11th. What do you think of this change? Let me know in the comments.

The comic book incarnation of The Authority

James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe is beginning to figure out what the franchise’s future is beyond Superman. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is in the middle of shooting for a June 2026 bow, while a solo Clayface feature is also gearing up for a 2026 launch. On the horizon are other previously announced projects like The Brave and the Bold, Swamp Thing, and a Teen Titans motion picture. Even with a Sgt. Rock movie shelved for now, the DC Universe is juggling lots of creative plates.

However, one production once announced as a critical part of the DC Universe’s Phase One arc, “Gods and Monsters”, has been on radio silence for years. The Authority, once boasted by Gunn as a “passion project,” has now been described by the same man as something that isn’t actively being worked on. That’s a shame, because I firmly believe The Authority could be a crucial project for the DC Universe if done right.

The Authority Could Redefine Who Gets to Headline DC Universe Films

the-authority-dc.jpg
Dc

So far, DC Universe movies are emphasizing very famous icons from DC Comics lore. Superman and Supergirl are the first two silver screen stars in this interconnected saga. Even September 2026’s Clayface, though starring a baddie that isn’t a household name, still comes from Batman lore. More obscure or troubled DC characters, like the Green Lanterns, Creature Commandos, or Peacemaker, are being firmly quartered off to HBO and Max streaming as of right now. The Authority, first created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch in May 1999, would certainly qualify as the latter type of DC characters.

This team of ragtag super-powered individuals who dish out justice through extreme means is so little-known that they haven’t even manifested in famous DC Comics cartoon shows or video games like Injustice. Ironically, that makes them perfect candidates to anchor a major DC Universe movie. The Authority is a collection of characters that mainstream audiences and comic book geeks alike could experience in the same fashion. It’s something novel and new that hasn’t been seen on the big screen before. Even Supergirl previously got a solo movie in the 1980s. The Authority, meanwhile, is uncharted cinematic territory.

If the DC Universe is going to really stand on its own, the movies (the most high-profile creative ventures for the franchise) are going to need to embrace characters beyond just the most famous DC Comics icons. It makes sense to repair the Superman and Green Lantern lore, but obscure superheroes also need their day in the sun. The Authority could be like this saga’s equivalent to Guardians of the Galaxy and enthrallingly remind audiences that anyone could headline a DC Universe motion picture, if it’s done right.

The Boys Shouldn’t Spell The End For The Authority

Amazon Prime Video

One reason Gunn said that the The Authority had gone on the backburner was struggles over figuring out how to make this movie different from The Boys. With this popular Amazon TV show’s depiction of grisly R-rated superheroes who aren’t bound by rules, how could The Authority compete? However, that kind of competition shouldn’t result in the movie’s demise. On the contrary, it should really just inspire further creativity in an Authority movie.

This DC Comics group existed before The Boys for seven whole years. Surely there’s material within this timeframe and beyond which could differentiate Jenny Sparks and company from Homelander’s super-powered crew. Plus, there has to be room in pop culture for multiple takes on the idea of a darker superhero team that delivers violent justice. We have endless cop, medical, and firefighter TV shows on the major broadcast networks. Surely, The Authority and The Boys could also co-exist.

DC

One key way to make sure The Authority does something new would be to let a really idiosyncratic filmmaker take on this material. Much like all the potential that existed in Ava DuVernay’s New Gods movie, or even James Gunn’s vision of the Guardians of the Galaxy, The Authority is a property where a talented director could leave a sizable footprint by adapting characters that have no pop culture precedent. There is no “legacy” to live up to, so a director could just follow their creative heart.

There are endless ways The Authority could be more than just another comic book movie based on DC characters. It could be a great big-budget tableau for a glorious director to run wild, not to mention a space where the DC Universe firmly declares that all characters are on the table to become movie stars. Let’s all hope that DC Studios eventually returns to this property and all its rich potential for cinematic magic.

Superman hits theaters on July 11th.

The official trailer for Superman has finally arrived. The first theatrical film in James Gunn’s new DC Universe centers on the Man of Steel, played by David Corenswet. Superman comes out at the beginning of July, so marketing for the film is only going to heat up like Superman’s X-ray vision. A recent teaser trailer gave us a glimpse of Superman fighting an original villain named the Hammer of Boravia. Joining Corenswet in Superman are Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, along with some Justice League guest stars. There is legitimate excitement for Superman, and our newest trailer will only add to the anticipation.

The Superman hype train started up earlier this week and includes a digital billboard in New York City’s Times Square. It shows Clark Kent and Krypto staring out over a cityscape before panning up to a blue sky with the slogan: “New York, look up.” Times Square is the perfect place to advertise a project on the scale of Superman since thousands of pedestrians travel through the tourist area each day.

One of the many changes coming in Superman involves the romantic relationship between Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane. While fans are familiar with Clark and Lois’ relationship across various comics, TV shows, and movies, James Gunn promises that Superman will tackle it from a different angle.

“He’s in love with her,” Superman director James Gunn told ABC News about the relationship between Clark Kent and Lois Lane in the movie. “She’s the one that needs the convincing in the relationship. It’s not him. You really see where he needs her in his life.”

The Clark Kent/Lois Lane romance is typically portrayed with Lois the one pursuing Superman. He’s usually the one who has to be convinced that being in a relationship with Lois is the best thing for him. Some examples of seeing this play out come in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. While older stories show Clark and Lois move from dating to eventually becoming a married couple, newer stories have focused on them already established together, and sometimes even raising a family together, like in the recently canceled Superman & Lois.

Gunn also added that the movie is “a personal journey for Superman that’s entirely new.” He added that Superman is “pretty damn good, but flawed.” Providing something new probably means that Superman will skip the origin story, since most fans are familiar with it by now. This opens the film to spend more time getting to the action, along with fleshing out its cast, which includes Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

The Man of Tomorrow is here today. After evoking the iconography of Christopher Reeve’s Superman movie in the teaser poster that swooshed online in December, DC Studios has unveiled a new poster showing a heroic and friendly-looking David Corenswet as the Man of Steel. The one-sheet, which comes ahead of Wednesday’s first full-length trailer, shows off the Kingdom Come-inspired logo and Corenswet’s Superman suit designed by three-time Oscar nominee Judianna Makovsky (The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3).

“Look up” by looking at the new Superman poster below.

Corenswet, the fresh-faced actor known for roles in Netflix’s Hollywood series and last year’s Twisters movie, described stepping out on set in the Superman costume for the first time as being similar to “when you get a nice haircut, and you forget about it, but then you walk around and everybody’s like, ‘Whoa, you look great.'”

“I walked on set, and I had others who saw me in the suit for the first time. So I got to see other people see Superman,” Corenswet told ComicBook and other outlets during a press event for the teaser trailer release in December. “I didn’t feel like Superman, but it was so amazing watching my cast mates and the crew members who are also getting to work on this amazing historic piece of media. The moments when they saw it for the first time, or when they saw Superman fly for the first time, not getting to be that particular, but getting to witness them witness it.”

“And then the best thing is seeing kids see it when crew people would bring their kids to set or getting to see first person, a five, 6-year-old kid see Superman,” Corenswet added. “There’s nothing like it. It’s amazing.”

On the suit designed by Makovsky, whose credits include 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, Gunn noted, “David goes, ‘He’s an alien from outer space who’s super powerful, who doesn’t want children to be afraid of him.’ And it touched me in the moment, and it touches me now as I say it.”

“That is who he is, and that’s where the costume comes from, and that goes along with Jerry [Siegel] and Joe [Shuster’s] original vision with the heartening back to wrestlers in the circus and these other things. And that’s who Superman is. And that’s why he has a reason for his color, [why] his costume is so colorful. It’s because he doesn’t want to scare children. He’s got red beams that come out of his eyes. He can blow over things with his breath. He wants to not be scary to children.”

Corenswet leads a cast that includes Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult (the X-Men movies) as Lex Luthor. Skyler Gisondo (The Righteous Gemstones) and Wendell Pierce (Thunderbolts*) are among the staff of The Daily Planet, playing Jimmy Olsen and Perry White, respectively; María Gabriela de Faría (The Moodys) is Angela Spica/the Engineer of The Authority, and Frank Grillo (Creature Commandos, Peacemaker season 2) is Rick Flag Sr. Pruitt Taylor Vince (Bird Box) and Neva Howell (Greedy People) are playing Clark Kent’s adoptive parents, Pa and Ma Kent of Smallville, Kansas, with Edi Gathegi (For All Mankind) as Mister Terrific, Isabela Merced (The Last of Us) as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion (The Suicide Squad) as the Green Lantern Guy Gardner, and Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Metamorpho, the Element Man.

Look for the new Superman trailer at 9 a.m. PST / 12 p.m. EST on Wednesday, May 14, before the movie lands in theaters on July 11.

Look, up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s… Superman versus the Hammer of Boravia! Ahead of Wednesday’s Superman trailer launch, writer and director James Gunn shared a 15-second snippet of footage showing the Man of Steel (David Corenswet) swooshing into action and trading blows with the Hammer of Boravia, an original villain from the fictional war-torn country that has been glimpsed in trailers released thus far. Between shots of the golden-armored Hammer unleashing his floor-leveling laser vision is a sneering Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), suggesting the LuthorCorp CEO has something to do with the menace to Metropolis…

Watch the just-released clip below.

The Hammer of Boravia bears a striking resemblance to the Lexo-Suit battle armor that John Corben — the future cyborg supervillain Metallo — piloted as the Man of Steel’s first super-powered foe in “The Last Son of Krypton,” the three-part series premiere of 1996’s Superman: The Animated Series. There Luthor’s war-profiting scheme involved the foreign country of Kaznia.

the hammer of boravia in superman (left), the lexo-skel suit 5000 in superman: The animated series (right)

First identified as the Hammer of Boravia in a Daily Planet newspaper article penned by mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent, the armored antagonist retaliates against Metropolis for Superman’s overseas interference. The article is transcribed below, but be warned of potential spoilers for plot points in Superman, which involves a conflict between Boravia and Jarhanpur (a neighboring country mentioned in Creature Commandos).

Metropolis was targeted by a superpowered mystery man on Sunday, resulting in over 20 million dollars in damage to the city. The self-titled “Hammer of Boravia” attacked Downtown Metropolis claiming it was retribution for the recent political interventions in Boravia by Superman. This vengeful expedition turned into a terrorist assault on American soil, hospitalizing 22 Metropolis citizens.

Boravia has been the source of numerous headlines worldwide in recent weeks as it invaded its neighboring country Jarhanpur, only for the brief war to be swiftly ended by the Superman. The President of Boravia, Vasil Glarkos, maintains the Hammer of Boravia is not a representative of the national government, but rather an independent vigilante.

When addressing the political ramifications of his actions, Superman said, “While critics thousands of miles away from this conflict continue to argue if what I did was right or wrong, the bottom line is peoples lives were threatened. I had to act.”

Damages included an ocular laser strike on the well-known Chocos Building. “Luckily no employees were injured,” says a Chocos spokesperson, “and this will not affect the production of our beloved Chocos cookies!”

The destruction of public property due to the actions of super-powered individuals and extraterrestrials has been a contentious topic of discussion in local government. Many believe that the recent tax hike is a consequence of this rise in super-people acting outside the law. “The recent tax raise was only to support our ever growing population”, claims a representative from the Metropolis capital. “Our latest project is to restore reported condemned housing and re-codify them into modern standards. This would increase available homes in New Troy 17%, Bakerline 19% and Queensland park 26%.”

Chocos, of course, is the Oreo-like sandwich cookie that is a favorite of J’onn J’onnz, the Martian Manhunter.

Starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Frank Grillo, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, María Gabriela de Faría, Wendell Pierce, Alan Tudyk, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Neva Howell, and Sean Gunn, DC Studios’ Superman soars into theaters on July 11.

The Man of Steel remains one of the most influential Superman comic books of all time. Published in 1986 to modernize the Superman mythos post-Crisis on Infinite Earths, the six-issue miniseries written and penciled by John Byrne would serve as the Man of Steel’s official origin story for the next two decades. In the time since, Byrne’s reinvention of the Last Son of Krypton would go on to inspire everything from television’s Superman: The Animated Series and Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman to the Zack Snyder-directed Man of Steel reboot in 2013.

While James Gunn’s Superman movie isn’t rehashing the origin story audiences have seen before on screen in 1978’s Superman: The Movie and Man of Steel, the first film in the rejiggered DC Universe nods to Clark Kent’s backstory in 1986’s The Man of Steel.

Revealed by new footage that has made its way online, Clark (David Corenswet) at one point returns home to the humble Kent farm in Smallville, Kansas, where he was raised by his adoptive parents (Neva Howell and Pruitt Taylor Vince). As he dozes off with Super-Pet Krypto on his chest, we can see two Easter eggs in Clark’s childhood bedroom.

The first is a Smallville Giants pennant, Clark’s Smallville High School football team from The Man of Steel #1, in the team’s colors of orange and yellow.

After Clark’s budding powers helped him single-handedly win the Giants’ last game of the season, Pa Kent took him to the field where the Kryptonian rocket ship crash-landed 18 years earlier and revealed the story of how he came to Earth. Clark, realizing he used his special abilities to make himself better than other people, then decided to leave Smallville and use his powers for the good of mankind. (The Man of Steel #1 is divided into four chapters: a prologue chronicling the final moments of Kal-El’s exploding home planet, Krypton; a teenage Clark’s high school years; Clark’s time operating in secret before an uncostumed “Superman” is exposed in a public act of heroism; and an epilogue where Clark suits up for the first time in his Ma Kent-tailored costume.)

The second Easter egg is a poster for The Mighty Crabjoys, a fictional band that has, so far, appeared thrice now in the burgeoning DCU. The David Harbour-voiced Frankenstein was seen wearing a Mighty Crabjoys band t-shirt in Creature Commandos, the animated series written by Gunn, and a billboard advertising the punk rock band is seen in trailers for Peacemaker season 2 (also created and written by Gunn).

Starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Frank Grillo, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, María Gabriela de Faría, Wendell Pierce, Alan Tudyk, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Neva Howell, and Sean Gunn, DC Studios’ Superman is only in theaters July 11.

A superdog is a superman’s best friend. DC Studios’ Superman movie has partnered with Milk-Bone to launch the Milk-Bone x Superman collab, which features David Corenswet’s Man of Steel and his canine companion: Krypto the Superdog. The cape-clad Dog of Steel — inspired by writer-director James Gunn’s own furry friend, his rescue dog Ozu — is the star of the dog treat brand’s campaign, comprised of Superman-themed biscuit boxes, an exclusive tie-in comic book, and a commercial showing a new look at the movie flying into theaters on July 11.

The 30-second Milk-Bone x Superman spot, below, shows the Super-Pet ruff-housing with Superman and engaging in “Fair Play” with Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific, who also makes his live-action feature film debut this summer.

Pet owners can treat their dog like a superhero by fetching the limited-edition Superman box of Milk-Bone biscuits, available on the Milk-Bone website and retailers like Walmart.

The collaboration includes free access to Superman: A Friendship Unleashed, a digital comic featuring Superman and Krypto, that is available to read on DC Universe Infinite (registration required).

In the 12-page comic from writer Ivan Cohen (The Batman & Scooby-Doo Mysteries) and artist Travis Mercer (Black Adam — The Justice Society Files: Atom Smasher), “A day of play for Superman and Krypto is interrupted by a crisis at S.T.A.R. Labs! While Krypto wrangles panicked dogs gone wild and Superman rescues endangered scientists, the superdog and his best friend must work together to save the day.”

The Milk-Bone Limited-Edition Superman Movie Box Original Biscuits bundle with free comic book is available for a limited time on the Milk-Bone online store.

Gunn previously shared the origin story behind Superman‘s Krypto in support of Adopt a Shelter Dog Month in October, writing in a social media post, “Krypto was inspired by our dog Ozu, who we adopted shortly after I started writing Superman. Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs and never knew human beings, was problematic to say the least. He immediately came in and destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture — he even ate my laptop. It took a long time before he would even let us touch him.”

“I remember thinking, ‘Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?’ – and thus Krypto came into the script and changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life,” Gunn continued, adding that the real-life inspiration for “the not-so-good-good-boy” Krypto today “is, fairly often, a very good boy.”

Superman — starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, María Gabriela de Faría, Wendell Pierce, Alan Tudyk, Pruitt Taylor Vince, and Neva Howell — is only in theaters July 11.

The Superman hype train is moving faster than a speeding bullet now. On Monday, DC Studios announced that new trailer for Superman would premiere on Wednesday, complete with a new billboard in New York City’s Times Square. The digital billboard shows Clark Kent and Krypto staring out over a cityscape before panning up to a blue sky with the slogan: “New York, look up.” There are just over eight weeks until Superman brings the DCU to the big screen on Friday, July 11th, and with a second trailer dropping already, there’s no telling where the advertising campaign could go from here.

The marketing for Superman started early and it has built up steam slowly but surely to this point. We’ve already seen several images, a teaser, a full-length trailer, and some other promotional stunts both online and at live events. With all that out already, a second trailer risks giving away too much before the movie even has a chance to premiere.

On the other hand, a second trailer could give fans some of the details they are craving. Trailers up to this point have only raised questions about the storyline, without answering any of them. We’ve seen the surprisingly big cast in costume, but fans can only speculate about what all these DC Comics characters are doing here. Perhaps this new trailer will cull some of the fan theories and narrow down the directions this story could take.

Superman has all the usual characters you’d expect to see with the Man of Steel — Ma and Pa Kent, Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, Perry White, and Jimmy Olsen. However, it also includes DC superheroes Mister Terrific, Hawkgirl, Supergirl, and the Green Lantern Guy Gardner. It includes Metamorpho in some capacity, though he may not be a hero in this story. Meanwhile, The Engineer, a member of The Authority seems more likely to be a villain than a hero in this context.

The cast list seems ideal for setting up the future of the DCU, but it’s hard to predict how it will all fit into one cohesive story. A new trailer might be a good opportunity to reassure fans who think this movie looks overcrowded with characters and subplots, but in the process, it risks giving away too much and angering fans that way. We may get more answers on Wednesday. Superman hits theaters in the U.S. on Friday, July 11th.

The highly anticipated DC Universe film, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, has hit a significant milestone, with DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn confirming that principal photography has officially wrapped. Gunn shared the exciting news on Threads in response to a fan query, simply stating, “Yes it has,” when asked if filming had concluded. This development means the project, starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, now transitions into the crucial post-production phase. With a theatrical release date set for June 2026, the creative team has a substantial period of over a year to meticulously craft the visual effects, sound design, and final edit, ensuring the film meets the high expectations for this new iteration of the iconic Kryptonian heroine.

The journey of the DCU’s Supergirl to the big screen began to take firm shape when House of the Dragon standout Alcock was officially cast as Kara Zor-El in January 2024. James Gunn, already co-head of DC Studios at that point, was effusive in his praise for Alcock, revealing he had her in mind for the role even before wider casting searches began. Filming for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow commenced in January 2025, with production spanning international locations, including London’s Leavesden Studios, Scotland, and Iceland, before wrapping in May 2025. The film is helmed by director Craig Gillespie, acclaimed for his work on character-driven films like I, Tonya and Cruella. The screenplay is penned by Ana Nogueira, whom Gunn has praised for delivering a script that exceeded his high expectations. This creative lineup is tasked with adapting the Eisner Award-nominated 2021-2022 comic book limited series of the same name, written by Tom King with art by Bilquis Evely.

The source material, King and Evely’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, is central to understanding the distinct direction of this new film. The comic presents a Supergirl who is far removed from the more traditionally optimistic portrayals. Instead, the story finds Kara Zor-El adrift, questioning her purpose after a lifetime of immense loss and the perpetual shadow of her famous cousin, Superman. Living on a planet orbiting a red sun to celebrate her 21st birthday, Supergirl encounters a young alien girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll. Ruthye is seeking a mercenary to help her exact revenge on Krem of the Yellow Hills, the man who murdered her father. This fateful meeting launches Supergirl, Ruthye, and Krypto the Superdog on a brutal and emotionally resonant journey across the cosmos. The series is lauded for its mature themes, its unique blend of science fiction and a gritty, space-western sensibility, and its profound exploration of trauma, grief, justice, and what it truly means to be a hero in an often unforgiving universe.

A Different Kind of Kryptonian for a New DC Universe

James Gunn has consistently made it clear that the Supergirl audiences will encounter in Woman of Tomorrow will be a significant departure from previous live-action iterations. He has often highlighted the fundamental differences in her upbringing compared to Clark Kent: “We see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl.” This shaping experience, according to Gunn, results in a Kara Zor-El who is “much more hardcore” and jaded than the Supergirl many are accustomed to. This nuanced approach is indicative of the broader strategy for the new DC Universe, which aims to explore iconic characters with fresh perspectives and tonal diversity.

In addition to Alcock, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow also features Eve Ridley as the young alien girl Ruthye Marye Knoll, Matthias Schoenaerts as the villainous Krem of the Yellow Hills, and, in a highly anticipated move, Jason Momoa will make his debut as the Czarnian bounty hunter Lobo. David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham are also part of the ensemble, portraying Supergirl’s Kryptonian parents, Zor-El and Alura In-Ze.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is scheduled to fly into theaters on June 26, 2026.
