Streaming through the entire Jurassic Park franchise has been something of a challenge the past few years. The original trio of films frequently hop between streaming services, while the newer Jurassic World titles have moved around a lot less. Finding all six on the same service has been impossible, but that is going to change in the very near future, just in time for fans to binge the entire saga before the newest entry hits theaters.

Beginning June 1st, all six Jurassic titles are going to be streaming together on Peacock. Jurassic World Dominion is already available on the service, and it’ll be joined by all of its counterparts in just one week’s time. June 1st will see the Peacock add Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park III, Jurassic World, and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

This will give everybody a whole month to watch all six of the Jurassic movies ahead of Jurassic World Rebirth, which roars into theaters on July 2nd. If you don’t already have a subscription to Peacock, you can sign up for one here.

In addition to the films hitting Peacock in June, Universal is also re-releasing the two separate trilogies as 4K Steelbooks. The Jurassic Park titles will all be collected in one Steelbook, while the first three Jurassic World titles are going to be together in their own edition.

Coming Soon to Peacock

Movie fans are undoubtedly excited to see the Jurassic films together on Peacock next month, but those titles are far from the only big additions hitting the service at the start of June. Below, you can check out the full lineup of Peacock’s June 1st arrivals.

We have a T. rex! Ever since the Tyrannosaurus rex roared, chomped, and stomped into the Steven Spielberg-directed Jurassic Park in 1993, the greatest predator that ever lived has been the mascot of the franchise (right down to the fossilized logo). “Rexy,” as the T. rex dino-star of Isla Nublar would come to be known, was last seen alongside Buck and Doe — the Isla Sorna T. rex mates from 1997’s The Lost World: Jurassic Park — within a Biosyn sanctuary at the end of 2022’s Jurassic World Dominion. The trilogy ender retired the original 30-year-old T. rex alongside legacy cast members Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern, and Sam Neill.

The fourth Jurassic World movie — appropriately titled Jurassic World Rebirth — marks a new era for the franchise. There’s a new director (Gareth Edwards, Godzilla and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), new characters (played by Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali), a new island (a research facility for the original Jurassic Park), and, of course, new dinosaurs.

Besides mutated dinosaurs like the Mutadons and the Distortus rex, genetic experiments gone awry, there are such classic species as Diloposaurus, Spinosaurus, and Pteranodon. Rebirth also features franchise newcomers like the Aquilops, the Titanosaurus, and a new breed of Tyrannosaurus rex that is already the star attraction, appearing on a promotional poster and the trailer teasing the T. rex’s attack on a river-rafting family (a sequence that originated in Michael Crichton’s 1990 novel and was cut from 1993’s Jurassic Park).

“Both Steven [Spielberg, executive producer] and I said, ‘Hey, now we can do it,'” writer David Koepp, who penned Jurassic Park and The Lost World, says of the T. rex raft scene in the Jurassic World Rebirth-covered issue of Empire Magazine. “When I was re-reading the novel, I told him, ‘Yeah, it’s as good as we remember. We have to have this.’ Because it was just a great idea for a scene, and if only one dinosaur character recurs, it has to be the T. rex.”

Just not the T. rex from Jurassic Park. Instead, Jurassic World Rebirth‘s T. rex is described as “bigger, beefier, and even surlier” — and a different breed of Tyrannosaur than what has been seen in all six installments so far.

“If you were dinosaurs making a film, you wouldn’t say, ‘Now here comes a human, and then we’ve got another human here,” Edwards explained. “You would say, ‘Here comes Robert De Niro, and there’s Javier Bardem.’ The original Jurassic Park T. rex is one actor. Now here’s another one.”

“Rexy” with “buck” and “Doe” in jurassic world dominion (2022)

While the bulkier rex resembles the “Bull T. rex” from Kenner’s The Lost World: Jurassic Park toyline in 1997, Edwards cited another inspiration: The Valley of Gwangi, a 1969 film which featured stop-motion dinosaur effects by Dynamation innovator Ray Harryhausen of The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad and Jason and the Argonauts fame.

Unlike the Mark McCreery-designed Rexy, which incorporated input from paleontologists and paleoartists for the sake of accuracy, Edwards wanted the new T. rex to look “the way people thought T. rexes looked before we knew better.”

“So we looked at some of the designs in Ray Harryhausen’s films, like The Valley of Gwangi,” Edwards said, adding that there was no topping the “near perfect” Rexy from the original Jurassic Park. Rebirth‘s T. rex is “kind of how, as a kid, I always thought a T. rex would look. I’m super happy with it.”

Jurassic World Rebirth — starring Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, Mahershala Ali, Rupert Friend, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Luna Blaise, David Iacono, Audrina Miranda, with Philippine Velge, Bechir Sylvain, and Ed Skrein — opens in theaters July 2.

To paraphrase Ian Malcolm: If there’s one thing that the history of the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World franchise has taught us, it’s that life will not be contained. On the heels of the new Jurassic World Rebirth trailer that roared online Tuesday, Universal has released a series of promotional posters showing some of the old and new dinosaurs — and a few of the human-made mutant monstrosities — that won’t be contained when the rebirthed Jurassic World returns to theaters on July 2.

The domestic and international posters below show Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali wading through dino-infested waters, a mountaineering ScarJo, and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo’s family of civilian cruisers moments before they’re shipwrecked by an attacking Spinosaurus.

Featured on the Korean poster is a new Tyrannosaurus rex, which can be seen chasing the family across the water in another tease of the river-rafting sequence inspired by Michael Crichton’s original Jurassic Park novel. The film’s one-sheet shows Johansson’s cliff-side encounter with the winged Quetzalcoatlus, one of the Pterosaur variants that will soar into the movie alongside the Mutadons: flying Velociraptors.

An exclusive D-Box poster showcases a redesigned Spinosaurus, resurfacing in the films for the first time since 2001’s Jurassic Park III, while the Mosasaurus, which debuted in the first Jurassic World in 2015, breaches the ocean’s surface on the 4DX poster.

Last but not least, Dolby Cinema and RealD 3D’s posters offer a glimpse at the Distortus rex: a six-limbed, deformed dinosaur that is part Tyrannosaurus rex, part Xenomorph from Alien, and part Rancor from Star Wars.

The logline reads, “This action-packed new chapter sees an extraction team race to the most dangerous place on Earth, an island research facility for the original Jurassic Park, inhabited by the worst of the worst that were left behind.”

Set five years after the events of 2022’s Jurassic World Dominion, Earth’s ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs. Those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived. The three most colossal creatures across land, sea and air within that tropical biosphere hold, in their DNA, the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind.

Pharmaceutical representative Martin Krebs (Rupert Friend) tasks skilled covert operations expert Zora Bennett (Johansson) with leading a skilled team on a top-secret mission to secure the genetic material. When Zora’s operation intersects with a civilian family whose boating expedition was capsized by marauding aquatic dinos — Reuben Delgado (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) and his family, including daughters Teresa (Luna Blaise) and Isabella (Audrina Miranda) — they all find themselves stranded on a forbidden island that had once housed an undisclosed research facility for Jurassic Park.

There, in a terrain populated by dinosaurs of vastly different species, they come face-to-face with a sinister, shocking discovery that has been hidden from the world for decades. Life, uh, found a way.

“Your scientists were so preoccupied over whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.” So says chaotician Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) in 1993’s Jurassic Park, warning wealthy InGen founder John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) about his plan to open a theme park of cloned dinosaurs created from millions of years old Paleo-DNA.

What followed was a series of increasingly deadlier dinosaurs: the Tyrannosaurus rex (in Jurassic Park and The Lost World: Jurassic Park), the Spinosaurus (Jurassic Park III), and the InGen-designed Indominus rex (Jurassic World), the Indoraptor (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), and the Giganotosaurus (Jurassic World Dominion).

Life, uh… finds a way

New movie Jurassic World Rebirth sends an extraction team — covert operations expert Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson), paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey), and team leader Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali) — to the most dangerous place on Earth: an island research facility for the original Jurassic Park. The forbidden island is inhabited by more than two dozen species that have migrated to the tropical climate, including the dinosaurs deemed too deadly to bring to Isla Nublar or Isla Sorna.

“The theme park owners did experimental work, leaving only the worst ones here,” Zora says in the new trailer, which teases a third site populated by man-made mutated dinos. In their DNA is the key to what could be the biggest medical breakthrough in centuries, and so Zora, Henry, and Duncan must survive their mission to extract samples from the still-living dinosaurs and potentially save millions of lives.

That’s if they can survive monstrous mutants like the Distortus rex, AKA the D-rex, and the Mutadons, an amalgamation of the winged Pterosaurs and the sharp-teethed, razor-clawed Velociraptors. (Rebirth, which is scripted by Jurassic Park and The Lost World’s David Koepp, also marks the film debuts of less scary-looking herbivores like an Aquilops and the Titanosaurus.)

Distortus rex: The Deadly D-Rex

Like the Indominus rex, the Indoraptor, and the Giganotosaurus before it, the Distortus rex is the gene-spliced creation of scientists who were so preoccupied over whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should. The deformed D-rex has only been glimpsed in trailers so far, but if the six-limbed mutant T-rex brings to mind the Rancor from Star Wars or the Xenomorphs from Alien, that’s by design.

“It’s kind of like if the T-Rex was designed by H.R. Giger, and then that whole thing had sex with a Rancor,” director Gareth Edwards told Empire Online, referring to the Oscar-winning Alien designer and the fanged creature made famous by 1983’s Return of the Jedi. “It’s a design that I was really happy with. I’d like to buy the toy of it when it comes out.”

Added production visual effects supervisor David Vickery, “It’s as if another animal has been wrapped around the T-rex. Gareth wanted us to feel sorry for it as well as terrified, because its deformities have caused it some pain, and there’s an encumbrance to it.”

As the extraction team encounters the most colossal creatures across land, sea and air — like the towering Titanosaurus, the aquatic Mosasaurus and crocodile-like Purussaurus, and the high-flying Quetzalcoatlus and Mutadons — the group will “come face-to-face with a sinister, shocking discovery that has been hidden from the world for decades.”

“We saw in some of the previous Jurassic World movies that their experiments made dinosaurs bigger, meaner, scarier,” Koepp explained. “And it occurred to me and Steven [Spielberg] that those can’t all have gone well.”

Hold onto your stubs. Tickets for Jurassic World Rebirth went on sale with the new trailer released on Tuesday morning, but fans booking advance tickets may have noticed that the film is being shown in RealD 3D, 4DX, ScreenX, and other large premium formats. Notably, none of the 1,738 IMAX screens worldwide will be playing the new Jurassic World, which is expected to be one of the biggest movies of the summer when it opens in theaters on July 2.

That’s a meteoric drop off from 2015’s Jurassic World, Universal’s Jurassic Park franchise-restarting blockbuster that stomped onto a record 800+ screens as IMAX’s biggest-ever worldwide release at the time.

When IMAX announced its 2025 slate, the exhibitor touted a record number of Filmed for IMAX titles. The Ryan Coogler-directed Sinners in April was the first of eight consecutive Filmed for IMAX releases, which continued with Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* (May 2) and Final Destination Bloodlines (May 16). Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning (May 23), How to Train Your Dragon (June 13), and F1 The Movie (June 27) will all have IMAX windows, followed by Superman (July 11) and The Fantastic Four: First Steps (July 25).

There is a finite number of IMAX screens, typically reserved for Filmed for IMAX titles and whichever movies commit to IMAX first. Unlike Universal’s own live-action How to Train Your Dragon — which will feature over 50 minutes of IMAX’s exclusive expanded aspect ratio when it flies onto PLF screens next month — Jurassic World Rebirth wasn’t Filmed for IMAX, and other films had committed to IMAX in advance. Jurassic World 4 was only surprise-announced in January 2024 (a year after Universal slated a live-action adaptation of Dreamworks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon for 2025), with the studio setting the summer 2025 release date another month after that.

In 2023, the Tom Cruise-fronted Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, released just nine days apart, competed for IMAX screens that July. Paramount’s Mission: Impossible had access to 401 North American PLF screens for just one week, having to concede them to Universal’s Oppenheimer for a rare three-week run.

Variety reported at the time that M:I 7, which only moved onto the July 2023 date because of pandemic-related delays, entered a busy summer season where IMAX had already set a commitment to Nolan’s Oppenheimer (also Filmed for IMAX). That’s why Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, the other half of the blockbuster “Barbenheimer” phenomenon released opposite Oppenheimer on July 21, didn’t play in IMAX. (Warner Bros. later set a limited, one-week engagement for Barbie in IMAX that September.)

Whether Jurassic World Rebirth gets a re-release IMAX run later this year remains to be seen. The post-summer season IMAX slate includes Weapons (Aug. 8), The Conjuring: Last Rites (Sept. 5), Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba Infinity Castle (Sept. 12), Him (Sept. 19), and One Battle After Another (Sept. 26).

Disney’s Tron: Ares (Oct. 10), the first Filmed for IMAX release since July’s Fantastic Four, will be followed by Mortal Kombat II (Oct. 24) and Predator: Badlands (Nov. 7). Universal’s Wicked: For Good and Disney’s Zootopia 2 are slated for November, with Disney’s Avatar: Fire and Ash (Dec. 19) set to dominate the pre-Christmas corridor.

Jurassic World Rebirth is directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) from a script by David Koepp (Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park) based on characters created by Michael Crichton. Frank Marshall (the Jurassic World trilogy) and Patrick Crowley (Twisters) are the producers, with Steven Spielberg (Jurassic Park), Denis L. Stewart (Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) and Jim Spencer (The Creator) executive producing.

Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, Mahershala Ali, Rupert Friend, and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo star in Jurassic World Rebirth, which opens only in theaters July 2.

Jurassic World Rebirth T-Rex chasing raft

Jurassic World has become the latest high-profile Hollywood property to get in on the collectible popcorn bucket trend. The release of the latest Jurassic World Rebirth trailer coincided with tickets going on sale. While tickets aren’t available at every location across the country yet, they can be pre-ordered at select Regal venues. To celebrate, the theater chain unveiled its exclusive Jurassic World Rebirth-themed popcorn bucket, which is one of the more creative examples we’ve seen to date. Long-time fans of the Jurassic franchise will probably want to scoop one up.

Dubbed the Incubator Dual Container, the collectible doubles as a popcorn bucket and drink holder. As the name suggests, it is modeled after the incubation equipment used in the films to birth dinosaurs. A baby raptor is sitting where the popcorn goes. You can check out a short teaser video for the bucket in the space below:

Special popcorn buckets aren’t anything new, but in recent years, there’s been more of a concentrated effort to release unique collectible ones in conjunction with some of the year’s biggest film releases (see: the infamous Dune: Part Two sandworm bucket). Just this year alone, audiences will be able to get buckets for Lilo & Stitch, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. The Mission: Impossible one was personally designed by Tom Cruise himself.

Jurassic World Rebirth is scheduled to release in early July, just in time for Independence Day. It’s positioned as Universal’s big tentpole of the summer. The studio has already put together an extensive marketing campaign for the movie, including airing a TV spot during this year’s Super Bowl. Directed by Gareth Edwards, Jurassic World Rebirth stars Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey as members of a team who go on a mission to collect dinosaur DNA to help development of a drug that can save millions of lives.

Most of the collectible buckets that have come out the past couple of years are rather fitting for their respective films. It makes sense that the one for Deadpool & Wolverine is – in Kevin Feige’s words – “intentionally crude.” The Lilo & Stitch bucket draws upon the titular alien’s cute and cuddly appearance. The makers of this Jurassic World Rebirth bucket found an approach that’s appropriate for the movie. Not only does it tie into the plot of discovering genetically engineered dinosaurs, it also fits tonally with Rebirth. Every time you reach in for some popcorn, there’s going to be a baby raptor lurking, mimicking the sense of dread that’s so prevalent throughout the franchise.

What gives this bucket an edge over some of the others is its functionality. The spot to hold your drink is a nice bonus, allowing the bucket to be a one-stop shop for your concessions when you check out Jurassic World Rebirth on the big screen. Seeing that Rebirth ranks as the summer’s most anticipated movie according to a Fandango poll, these buckets should be a hot seller.

Are you going to pick up an Incubator Dual Container? Let us know in the comments!

Welcome back to Jurassic Park. Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali journey to the island that birthed John Hammond’s dinosaur theme park in a new Jurassic World Rebirth trailer, which teases a second extinction event for the cloned creatures that have roamed — and ruled — the Earth since we last saw them co-existing with humans in 2022’s Jurassic World Dominion.

In the new movie directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) and written by David Koepp (Jurassic Park), covert operations expert Zora Bennett (Johansson), paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis (Bailey), and team leader Duncan Kincaid (Ali) are sent to the forbidden island that once housed an undisclosed research facility for the original Jurassic Park.

“Any dinosaurs too dangerous were left here,” Loomis says in the trailer (below) over footage of an Aliens-esque sequence showing glimpses of the Distortus rex, the six-limbed mutated dinosaur genetically-engineered by InGen scientists on the third site where Rebirth takes place.

Five years after the Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard-fronted Dominion, dinosaurs are once again an endangered species. Earth’s ecology has proven largely inhospitable for the dinosaurs resurrected from prehistoric DNA, and those remaining have flocked to isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived.

Residing in this tropical biosphere are the three most colossal creatures across land, sea, and air, which hold in their DNA the key to a drug with miraculous life-saving benefits for humanity. It would be “the biggest medical breakthrough in centuries,” says Big Pharma’s Martin Krebs (Rupert Friend), but they require samples from living dinosaurs. “You want to take blood samples from these animals while they’re alive?” Bennett asks incredulously. In order to save millions of lives, the extraction team of Bennett, Loomis, and Kincaid will risk their own to obtain the Paleo-DNA from the third site: the most dangerous place on Earth.

While sea is the domain of the aquatic Mosasaurus and the sea-faring Spinosaurus, and air the domain of the Mutadons — new winged Raptor-Pterosaur hybrids — land is ruled by the greatest predator that ever lived: Tyrannosaurus rex. But in a sequence inspired by author Michael Crichton’s original Jurassic Park novel, the T-Rex attacks as the humans cross a river by raft.

“We did take some things from [the novels],” Koepp previously told Vanity Fair about the new movie, which isn’t an adaptation of any one novel. “There was a sequence from the first novel that we’d always wanted in the original movie, but didn’t have room for. We were like, ‘Hey, we get to use that now.’ But just to get back in that head space 30 years later — is it still fun? And the answer is yes, it still really is. Dinosaurs are still fun.” And still scary.

Jurassic World Rebirth — starring Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, Mahershala Ali, Rupert Friend, and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, with Luna Blaise, David Iacono, Audrina Miranda, Philippine Velge, Bechir Sylvain, and Ed Skrein — roars into theaters July 2.

Jurassic World: Rebirth director Gareth Edwards had an old Hollywood legend in mind while casting Scarlett Johansson in the lead role. The filmmaker had heard that Ridley Scott didn’t specify a gender for Ripley, the lead character in his movie Alien. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Edwards said he did the same with the character that became Zora Bennett, casting a wide net for the perfect actor. That, along with a few other guiding parameters, led him to cast Johansson, and he regards it as a great decision. He claimed that Johansson herself has been dying for a chance to get into the Jurassic franchise for quite some time.

The flexible genders of the characters in Alien have been well-documented, including in the 2003 behind-the-scenes documentary The Beast Within: The Making of Alien. According to that feature, screenwriter Dan O’Bannon intentionally left all the human characters underdeveloped, with a note on the scrip saying: “The crew is unisex and all parts are interchangeable for men or women.”

Edwards told EW that he had that old wisdom in mind while casting Rebirth. Armed with a script by Jurassic franchise legend David Koepp, he knew his three main characters were a covert ops veteran, their longtime partner in crime, and a paleontologist tagging along with them. “It felt like at least one of them was going to be an A-lister,” Edwards recalled.

Edwards said that early in the casting process, he found himself in a Universal Pictures conference room with Steven Spielberg and several others contributing to the film. They were brainstorming some casting ideas, naming their top picks before logistical considerations would force them to narrow it down. “There were your obvious names floating around, and then at one point, Steven said, ‘Well, if we don’t give it to Scarlett, she’s going to kill me because she’s been pursuing a Jurassic film for ages,'” Edwards said. “My eyes lit up.”

Now that the movie is finished, Edwards said he admires Johansson more than ever. “It’s hard to think of someone better than Scarlett,” he said. “Now having worked with her, it’s really clear why she’s had the career she’s had, and she’s never been out of a limelight, as well as being an excellent actress.”

Jurassic World: Rebirth hits theaters on July 2nd. Previous entries in the franchise are currently split across the Starz streaming app and Prime Video.

Jurassic Park debuted in theaters in 1993, and 32 years later, the movie remains one of the most quotable of Steven Spielberg’s career, and certainly of the dinosaur genre. Michael Crichton’s 1990 novel Jurassic Park first told the tale of billionaire entrepreneur John Hammond building a theme park of dinosaurs cloned from pre-historic DNA. The novel was an immediate best-seller, and made it to the big-screen three years later in Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park, which became the highest grossing movie ever made to that point. Jurassic Park spawned multiple sequels and an entire media franchise, cementing itself as THE dinosaur-based franchise, but it all goes back to the impact the original Jurassic Park had.

Not only did Jurassic Park bring dinosaurs to life with some of the best visual effects of its time, but it is also a highly-quotable movie. Jeff Goldblum snags the lion’s share of iconic Jurassic Park quotes with his performance as Dr. Ian Malcolm, but David Koepp and Michael Crichton’s script is packed with unforgettable lines from the movie’s other characters, as well. Here are the 10 Jurassic Park movie quotes that cement the movie’s iconography over three decades later.

“Must go faster!”

One of Jurassic Park‘s most iconic lines is one of the sort that every audience member would say in the situation of a T-Rex being in hot pursuit of them. As Robert Muldoon (Bob Peck), Dr. Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) and the injured Dr. Malcolm head back for the safety of the Visitor’s Center, the unleashed T-Rex gives chase, eager to chow down on her next meal. As the T-Rex gets closer, Dr. Malcolm admonishes Muldoon “Must go faster!” in pure Jeff Goldblum fashion. So iconic and hilarious was Dr. Malcolm’s line to pick up speed in Jurassic Park, Goldblum later famously recited “Must go faster!” thrice to Will Smith as the duo flee pursuing aliens in their massive mothership during the finale of 1996’s Independence Day.

“And before you even knew what you had, you patented it, and packaged it, and slapped it on a plastic lunch box, and now, you’re selling it, you want to sell it!”

As the dinosaur population of Jurassic Park is unveiled to the park’s first tour group, the group of scientists react with a mix of awe-struck wonder and skeptical trepidation. Particularly nervous about the idea of bringing dinosaurs back to life is Dr. Ian Malcolm, who chides John Hammond (Sir Richard Attenborough) about the dangers of such generic experimentation. As Malcolm argues, Hammond and Jurassic Park’s scientists were so blinded by the possibilities of resurrecting dinosaurs into the modern world as a capitalist venture, they failed to forsee how it could go wrong, leading to Malcolm’s iconic line, said while pounding the lunch table. Oft-quoted and always done so verbatim, Dr. Malcolm’s line is a timeless warning about the dangers of trying to turn dinosaurs into a multi-billion dollar theme park attraction.

“The only one I’ve got on my side is the blood-sucking lawyer!”

John Hammond’s attempt to sell the tour group of scientists on Jurassic Park’s safety and security doesn’t go as he’d hoped. In addition to Dr. Malcolm’s aforementioned concerns, Dr. Sattler expresses her own uneasiness (“There are plants in this building that are poisonous. You picked them because they look good”), and his Hail Mary to get one pre-tour endorsement out of Dr. Grant also ends in failure. In the end, Hammond still takes it in stride, chuckling the hilarious line, which the lawyer in question, Donald Gennaro (Martin Ferrero), receives with a simple “Thank you.” In addition to its warning about the dangers of playing God, Jurassic Park seemingly isn’t the biggest fan of corporate lawyers.

“What have they got in there? King Kong?”

As the first tour into Jurassic Park begins, the two tour cars enter the the park through a towering set of swinging doors bearing the park’s name, leading Dr. Malcolm to quip “What have they got in there? King Kong?” Malcolm’s line adds some levity to the inaugural Jurassic Park tour, but also acts as a fun Easter egg of film history for 1933’s King Kong. The residents of Skull Island similarly protect themselves from Kong’s wrath behind a similar wall with swinging doors, through which they also offer human sacrifices to Kong. Malcolm’s line ultimately harkens back to the majesty and terror of pre-historic creatures hidden behind a wall with a bit of King Kong trivia, and which foreshadows the futility of trying to contain the dinosaurs as no more effective than the same attempt for Kong.

“Shoot her! Shoot her!”

The first timeless quote of Jurassic Park arrives in the movie’s opening scene with the park’s security team unloading a Velocipator into her designated observation pen. The effort ends up going disastrously, with the Raptor knocking the loading pen away from the main pen’s doorway, and viciously attacking a park worker. As the Jurassic Park team tries to subdue the Raptor with tasers, Robert Muldoon proclaims “Shoot her! Shoot her!” in a last ditch and ultimately failed effort to save the park worker’s life. Not only is it one of Jurassic Park‘s most iconic quotes, it’s easily the movie’s most tragic.

“All I’m say is that life, uh, finds a way.”

The scientists of Jurassic Park and well as John Hammond are convinced they’ve got security and population control in the park on a lock, partly by engineering the entire dinosaur population to be female. Dr. Malcolm, of course, remains unconvinced, and monologues that such artificial restrictions on life have never taken hold. Asked by the incredulous Dr. Henry Wu (B.D. Wong) if he believes that the park’s entirely female population will reproduce, Dr. Malcolm responds with the iconic line. Standing the test of time as another unforgettable Ian Malcolm/Jeff Goldblum quote, “Life finds a way” eventually found its way onto the poster for 2018’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom as the movie’s tagline.

“Spared no expense.”

John Hammond is just as much a salesman as he is an entertainer, as exemplified by his running quote throughout Jurassic Park of “Spared no expense.” Hammond drops the line on everything from park security to the choice of Richard Kiley to narrate the park tour to even the choice of ice cream kept in the Visitor’s Center’s dining room. Hammond’s quote has a double meaning in the context of Jurassic Park‘s story, illustrating his shrewd acumen as an entrepreneur to take Jurassic Park tourists on the ultimate adventure, and also demonstrating that no amount of money can make his dream of a dinosaur-filled theme park a safe venture.

“Clever girl.”

Few propositions are as deadly as hunting Velociraptors, as Robert Muldoon discovers when he tries to take down a pair of escaped Raptors while Dr. Sattler tries to restore Jurassic Park’s power. Thinking he’s got one Raptor in locked, another pops up right next to him, with Muldoon commending the Raptor as a “Clever girl” before being tackled and devoured before he can turn his shotgun on his new target in time. Funnily enough, Muldoon’s demise perfectly recaptures Dr. Grant’s Raptor attack scenario early in the movie, with the attack from Jurassic Park‘s most intelligent dinosaur indeed coming not from the front, but from the side.

“That is one big pile of sh-t.”

Seriously, what Jurassic Park fan hasn’t quoted this line ad infinitum? As Dr. Sattler examines the dung of a sick Triceratops to diagnose her illness, Dr. Malcolm offers the most blunt reaction to it possible with his comment “That is one big pile of sh-t”. Easily the biggest laugh line of Jurassic Park, Dr. Malcolm’s one-liner has been forever immortalized with memes and GIFs on top of being eternally quoted, and will surely continue that trend for decades to come.

“Life found a way.”

One of Jurassic Park‘s most enduring quotes pays off another, specifically Dr. Malcolm’s skepticism that the dinosaurs of the park can’t breed due to all of them being female with Malcolm’s rebuttal of “Life, uh, finds a way.” Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) discovers just how right Dr. Malcolm was as he guides Lex and Tim back to the Visitor’s Center, discovering the remains of dinosaur eggs along the way, indicating that the dinosaurs are breeding. Dr. Grant hypothesizes that, with the dinosaur’s cloned DNA having been supplemented with frog DNA to fill in the gaps of their pre-historic genes, some of the park’s dinos have begun changing sex, as some West African frogs are known to do, to facilitate breeding in a single-sex environment. “Life found the way,” Dr. Grant comments, confirming Dr. Malcolm’s once seemingly impossible theory and delivering an immortal line capturing how timeless a dinosaur classic Jurassic Park will always be.

Jurassic Park is available to stream on Hulu and AMC+, and Jurassic World Rebirth will be released in theaters on July 2nd.

Blue roaring at Owen Grady in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)

This summer’s Jurassic World Rebirth will swap out the human leads of the previous three Jurassic World installments for a new motley crew of human beings so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they never stopped to think if they should. Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, Rupert Friend, Jonathan Bailey, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Ed Skrein, and Luna Blaise are just some of the actors taking on major roles in this production. There will, of course, also be tons of new dinosaurs, including at least one mutant T-Rex offshoot with an overabundance of arms.

The Jurassic Park franchise has employed tons of great actors over the years to play its human characters including Judy Greer, Dichen Lachman, Toby Jones, Julianne Moore, and Vincent D’Onofrio (among many others). But do you remember their names? Beyond the engrossing humans in the very first Jurassic Park movie, none of the humans in this franchise have left an impression. Rather than shelling out Scarlett Johansson money for her to headline Rebirth, it’s time for the dinosaurs themselves to be the exclusive stars of the Jurassic Park saga.

Dinosaurs Can Totally Headline a Movie

jurassic-world-dominion-t-rex.png

Putting dinosaurs front and center in a movie without any human leads might sound weird, but in all honesty, it’s not a strange concept. For one thing, the concept of having lead characters who can’t talk isn’t an unprecedented concept. There’s an entire era of silent cinema out there proving audiences can be absorbed into dialogue-free storytelling. Modern incarnations of this mold like No One Will Save You or Flow show that the appeal of such stories lives on into the 21st century.

For proof of the joys of silent dinosaur cinema, just look at Gertie the Dinosaur, a 100+ year old animated short film focusing on the mischief created by the titular critter. Gertie is infinitely more compelling than Vince Vaughn in The Lost World: Jurassic Park or Chris Pratt in any of the Jurassic World films. She’s adorable, a scallywag, and immensely hungry (not to mention prone to random naps), with all these character traits succinctly materializing in just a few minutes of screentime. Imagine what kind of rich, fun personalities could emerge following a dinosaur for a feature-length Jurassic Park movie.

Projects like Gertie the Dinosaur (and even projects like WALL-E) reflect how much humans adore interpreting their own emotions or words onto silent characters. That’s a phenomenon the Jurassic Park dinosaurs could easily play into for a whole movie. Plus, there’s a frustrating historical trend of various dinosaur-centric properties like The Land Before Time or Dinosaur initially planning on being silent epics before shoehorning in traditional dialogue. A Jurassic Park entry focusing just on dinosaurs could finally make those unrealized concepts a reality. Finally, a movie about dinosaurs who don’t incessantly yammer.

Focusing On Dinos Would Fix Jurassic Park’s Human Problem

chris-pratt-jurassic-world-fallen-kingdom-indiana-jones.jpg

It’s clear that audiences would totally sit still and be enraptured by a dinosaur-centric Jurassic Park movie if it was well-made and emotionally engaging. Even better, concentrating on the dinosaurs would solve a problem plaguing this franchise in recent years. The original Jurassic Park was packed with striking characters and intimate human-centric scenes (like John Hammond wistfully recalling his flea circus) that crackled with tangible pathos. Since then, though, the humans have been a snore, especially in the Jurassic World movies.

There’s something so deeply obligatory about the writing of post-1993 Jurassic Park/World human characters that makes it impossible to invest in them. People come to these movies for fun dinosaur chaos, not to hear poor Laura Dern utter the phrase “slid into my DM’s” or witness Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard do tin-eared romantic banter. Worse yet, the most recent World installments filled up the human casts with characters like an older Lewis Dodgson who just harkened back to the old movies.

Focusing on dinosaurs for an entire Jurassic Park movie could help this saga finally burst free from the constraints of fan-service and the legacy of the original 1993 masterpiece. No more could this franchise rely on human characters meant to remind viewers of Ian Malcolm or Dennis Nedry. Instead, fresh prehistoric protaganists would fill the frame. Audiences would have to relate to characters previously only used for chase scenes or jump scares. That would be an exciting, creative challenge rife with creative possibilities far more enticing than just making more disposable Jurassic Park human characters. People come to the Jurassic movies for glorious dinosaur spectacle. It’s time this franchise seized on that reality by ceding the spotlight to these resurrected creatures.

Jurassic World Rebirth hits theaters on July 2.

When it was released in the summer of 1993, Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park played and played in theaters, ultimately ending up the highest-grossing movie of the year with $357 million in unadjusted domestic box office dollars. It was an event, and so too was The Lost World: Jurassic Park four years later. And, while a massive success in its own right, it still made about $128 million less domestically than its predecessor. It wasn’t quite the crowd-pleasing rollercoaster ride the original film was, with some detractors (quite fairly) claiming it was too grim and violent to have the family appeal that the original film did.

But, let’s be honest, that’s part of why The Lost World is the best Jurassic Park sequel. It’s a film that feels like it has real stakes, which is an impact only compounded by the fact that, this time, there’s a kid on the island standing beside the adults.

A Lot of Movie

river chase in the lost world: jurassic park

On one hand, The Lost World can feel like a movie that throws a lot at the wall to see what sticks. On the other hand, it’s also careful to try to stick to what worked the first time. Most of the dinosaurs we see here were seen in the original movie, which, in spite of the upped stakes provided by the darker tone, can make it feel like a retread of the 1993 adventure.

But when a movie is as beloved as Jurassic Park, feeling similar to it isn’t exactly a detriment. Is The Lost World as great as Jurassic Park? Not at all. But it’s far more entertaining than the films that followed. Not to mention, if you rent a Jurassic Park movie wanting to see dinosaurs eat people, The Lost World is the entry for you. A lot of people get chomped in this movie.

And, more often than not, these chompings occur in a memorable and well-crafted set piece. For instance, the raptors in the tall grass is one of the franchise’s most iconic sequences, the opening scene with the little girl and the Compies does a great job of setting the dangerous tone, the T-Rex attacking the InGen camp is a blast, and the waterfall scene is just as top-tier.

Retaining the Original’s Power

eddie carr in the lost world: jurassic park

But the highlight of The Lost World, the elongated sequence that shows that Spielberg and crew still had the juice that made the first film great, is the trailer over the cliff set piece. From the shots of Dr. Ian Malcolm, Dr. Sarah Harding, and Nick Van Owen dangling over the side of the cliff within the trailer to the hair-raising race against the clock faced by the ill-fated Eddie Carr, desperately trying to pull the lengthy, heavy vehicle back up in an SUV as a pair of T-Rexes stomp around nearby, it all works. Of course, it’s also in this sequence, with the demise of Mr. Carr, that any number of ’90s kids got some pretty visceral nightmares. So, in a way, that’s another plus.

What The Lost World is, like Jurassic Park, is a rollercoaster ride. It’s just this rollercoaster is so intent on delivering ante-upping set pieces that it often forgoes logic. This includes what may just happen to be the most rationality-dispelling moment in blockbuster cinema history. InGen wants to bring the T-Rex and its baby to San Diego and, thanks to some tranquilizer darts, they succeed in doing so. As the protagonists and human antagonists stand at the Port of San Diego, the boat bringing the dinosaurs careens onto the mainland. We see that all of the boat’s crew have been devoured, yet there’s absolutely no explanation of what killed them.

It doesn’t make a shred of sense, but now that there’s a T-Rex about to go all Godzilla on California, we don’t quite care. That in and of itself summarizes The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Something ludicrous happens, but we’re not given enough time to really let it bother us because another ludicrous, entertaining thing is right around the corner.

What also helps The Lost World: Jurassic Park stand as the best of the IP’s sequels is that what came after was even less impressive than this film was at its worst (except for when Dr. Malcolm’s daughter gymnastics a raptor to death). Jurassic Park III is an admirable early film from Captain America: The First Avenger‘s Joe Johnston, but even with a new dino, it yet again felt like a retread. And, this time, hardly anyone was eaten.

Then there’s the Jurassic World trilogy (soon to be expanded via Jurassic World Rebirth). Jurassic World was a huge financial success and, to a degree, a critical success, but it was also too glossy. And, for some, the whole raptor training plotline was and remains ridiculous.

There were also problems with how the two protagonists were written. One was an Indiana Jones ripoff and the other one was a negligent aunt whose first big moment of badassery was a scene where she takes off her high heels in the jungle (played for laughs).

As for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Jurassic World Dominion, the first was ambitious but ultimately a failure, while the latter was disastrously anticlimactic. It’s hard to imagine that the film that finally brought the dinos to the mainland (and brought back the original cast) could be so dull, but that was exactly the case for Dominion. They’ve only helped to further emphasize how it was nice to get some more ’90s vibes from The Lost World. Perhaps we took those vibes for granted back in the day.

Jurassic World Rebirth is set to bring a brand-new dinosaur into the franchise’s next adventure, with the dino’s name being a fittingly menacing one. The news of the new dinosaur’s name was revealed by Empire Magazine on the publication’s Instagram, with the dinosaur known as the Distortus Rex. A shadowy look at the dino’s design was also included as part of the post, which teases May’s print issue of Empire covering Rebirth. Jurassic World Rebirth is reportedly set five years after Jurassic World: Dominion, with the dinosaur population that was freed upon the world unable to survive in the bulk of modern Earth’s environment, and concentrating themselves in a select few locations.

Rebirth follows a group of mercenaries led by Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson) who embark on an expedition to an island location teeming with dinosaurs to retrieve samples of their DNA, which could help perfect a revolutionary new pharmaceutical drug. However, the team finds themselves stranded in the dino-filled location alongside a shipwrecked family, forcing them to try to navigate out of the location alive.

From the look of the Distortus Rex, the creature’s appearance more closely resembles that of a classic Japanese kaiju than a traditional dinosaur. However, throwing new dinosaur surprises at audiences has been the calling card of the Jurassic Park franchise for over 30 years. Indeed, the Jurassic World movies in particular have really made an effort to capitalize on new dinosaurs.

From the start, the Jurassic World movies have brought at least one new dinosaur into the franchise with each installment. 2015’s Jurassic World started the Jurassic Park franchise’s revival by introducing the fearsome Indominus Rex, a hybrid dinosaur created from various different dinosaur carnivores. 2018’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom brought in a new dinosaur of its own with the Indoraptor, while 2022’s Jurassic World: Dominion brought in the Gigantosaurus as its dinosaur final boss. With the Distortus Rex, Rebirth is very much continuing what has become an ongoing tradition in the Jurassic World movies.

Even going back to the original Jurassic Park trilogy, each movie has delivered many amazing and scary new dinosaurs, like the Spinosaurus in Jurassic Park III and the brief glimpse at the Pteranodons in The Lost World: Jurassic Park that was later paid off in Jurassic Park III. Ultimately, the fact that there is such an abundance of dinosaurs in the fossil record creates a virtually unlimited supply of dinosaurs for the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies to work into the equation. That also lends itself very well to merchandising, which has long been a key pillar of the popularity and success of the Jurassic Park franchise in all forms of media.

The backstory of the Distortus Rex has not been shown in much detail yet, though it seems likely that it is more in the vein of the Indominus Rex as a dinosaur created through further genetic experimentation. In any case, the Distortus Rex seems likely to be positioned in much the same way as the Spinosaurus, Indominus Rex, and Indoraptor previously were as being the prehistoric big bad of Jurassic World Rebirth, and hopefully, the Distortus Rex debuts with the same memorable impact as its predecessors when the movie hits theaters.

Jurassic World Rebirth will be released in theaters on July 2nd.

Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey in Jurassic World Rebirth

Ahead of its release this summer, Jurassic World Rebirth has been officially rated, and it sticks to a long-standing franchise tradition. Per the movie’s listing on the Film Ratings website, Jurassic World Rebirth is rated PG-13, the same rating all previous installments in the series received, dating back to the 1993 original. Throughout its history, the Jurassic Park films have featured several intense sequences that might be frightening to younger viewers, but they aren’t violent enough to necessitate an R rating. They fall right within that sweet spot Jurassic Park director Steven Spielberg talked about when he proposed the PG-13 rating be created back in the ’80s.

The official reasonings for Jurassic World Rebirth‘s PG-13 rating include “intense sequences of violence/action, bloody images, some suggestive references, language and a drug reference.” All three installments of the first Jurassic World trilogy had similar “intense sequences of violence/action,” but Rebirth is the first one to have “bloody images.” The original Jurassic Park films earned their PG-13 ratings for “intense sci-fi terror.”

Jurassic World Rebirth director Gareth Edwards has been open about his desire to take the franchise back to its roots. He’s paying homage to the original Jurassic Park by crafting a story of survival, capturing the tone of that seminal ’90s classic. The Jurassic World Rebirth trailer has played up the horror elements, showcasing some of the most terrifying dinosaurs the franchise has seen.

In a crowded summer movie season featuring the likes of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Superman, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps (among other high-profile titles), Jurassic World Rebirth was voted as the the season’s most anticipated film in a Fandango poll. Though the previous Jurassic World movies weren’t critical darlings, they were all very successful at the box office, grossing over $1 billion each.

As entertaining as some might find an R-rated Jurassic World movie that goes all out on dino carnage, nobody should have expected Rebirth would be the one to blaze that trail. This is Universal’s big tentpole for the summer, and the studio obviously wants to maximize box office potential — especially since it’s premiering in a loaded July. Embracing the PG-13 rating allows Edwards & Co. to appeal to the widest possible audience and stay in line with the spirit of the franchise. While the violence may not be as bloody as something like John Wick, for example, Jurassic World Rebirth will likely push the PG-13 rating to its limits. A film doesn’t have to be R to deliver horrifying thrills.

Hopefully, some of the “intense sequences” in Jurassic World Rebirth are memorable, setting the stage for even more exciting set pieces in future sequels. It’s already been confirmed Rebirth brings back the famous river raft sequence from the original Jurassic Park novel, which sounds like it will be a centerpiece of the film. Jurassic Park still resonates as one of the finest blockbusters of all time because of its expertly crafted scenes of sci-fi terror (the T-Rex breaking out of its paddock, raptors in the kitchen) that proved PG-13 was more than scary enough for summertime audiences.

From the start, Jurassic World aims to show that its monstrous Indominus Rex differs from the other dinosaurs fans have seen in the franchise. We’ve witnessed cunning and deadly dinosaurs throughout the franchise, but the Indominus Rex is a lab creation from top to bottom, created from a slew of fearsome dinosaurs, including the Tyrannosaurus Rex, Velociraptor, and a few others. The result is a killing machine, and if` that’s not enough, the movie wastes little time demonstrating just how cruel and deadly this new creation is in the park. But is this a type of brutality fans haven’t seen in the films before Jurassic World? If anything, the brutality is part of the franchise’s successful chemistry.

In Jurassic World, we’re introduced to the full-size Indominus Rex after it successfully masks its temperature and lures Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) and two park employees into its enclosure. The monster strikes and delivers one of the franchise’s goriest deaths in a few short moments.

After revealing itself and chasing the trio, Indominus Rex immediately snatches up the slowest of the group with monstrous claws like some sort of demon, warranting a blood-curdling scream before a loud crunch silences the man. The beast then proceeds to tear him apart, catching fans off guard and setting stakes for what’s to come. In a tense moment outside of its cage, the Indominus tosses a car with ease and continues its slaughter throughout the park.

Was it Too Shocking for Jurassic Park fans?

But is it such a shocking scene? Fans on Reddit seem to think the original Jurassic Park stands apart from the newer entries. And one Reddit commenter even notes that Jurassic World was not an “overly gory movie,” lamenting that its sequels toned down the violence. That’s arguable since most of the scenes featuring the Indoraptor in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom show it chomping people to bits. The scene where Ted Levine’s Wheatley is eaten maintains the horror from the first entry while slowing it down. Where Indominus is fast and ferocious, Indoraptor lifts Levine by his arm and seems to enjoy torturing the mercenary before eating him.

Similarly, the original trilogy seems to get misremembered in terms of its gore and horror. The opening of Jurassic Park set the tone from the moment the velociraptor cage moves through the jungle leaves. I can still vividly remember the worker’s hands slipping away while the iconic raptor scream wails, wasting little time in scaring me to death. It also got me hooked, so it was super effective work by director Steven Spielberg.

What Movies Were They Watching?

The movie does not slow up much from that point. Characters we love, like Samuel L. Jackson’s Ray Arnold or Bob Peck’s Robert Muldoon, are unceremoniously killed in horrible fashion. Arnold’s arm is all that’s left of him by the conclusion, while Muldoon famously dies in the jaws of a “clever girl.” If you’re after gore, it’s there from the first movie, and it continues in the sequels: Donald Gennaro shows his cowardly side by abandoning the kids in the park cruiser with the T-Rex, hiding in the toilet nearby. This doesn’t work, of course, and Gennaro ends up in the jaws of the Rex and is ripped in half by its jaws. Dennis Nedry receives similar horror treatment with his death by Dilophosaurus. It’s far worse in the Michael Crichton book, but the onscreen demise is horrifying enough.

Eddie Carr, Donald Gennaro & Mr. Udesky Would Like a Word

The franchise ups the onscreen gore in The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Countless nameless poachers are crushed, eaten, sliced, and diced throughout the movie, but the heroes seem to suffer the gnarliest demise. Eddie Carr (Richard Schiff) is in charge of the equipment for the heroes and dies sacrificing himself to save his team’s trailer which falls over a cliff after a T-rex attack. For his noble act, he is torn out of his car by the Tyrannosaurus pair and split in half like a wishbone.

The bloodletting continues in Jurassic Park III with the Spinosaurus and Velociraptor chasing the returning Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and his group. One of the mercenaries hired for protection is snatched up in broad daylight by the Spino and causes the group’s plane to crash. Later, the mercenary leader, Mr. Udesky (Michael Jeter), has what might be the most chilling death in the series. He is used as bait by the Velociraptors, leaving him alive by severing his spine before coldly snapping his neck once their trap is revealed.

Jurassic World is merely doing its part to keep up with the original trilogy when it comes to shocking gore. The stakes are raised in the sequel quite a bit, thanks to modern film capabilities, andit never shies away from showing its teeth. As other fans point out, Dominion sorely lacked these types of moments and hindered the rest of the movie. Worse yet, it only draws more attention to the shortcomings of the film and its bloated runtime.

Let’s hope this type of shocking scene returns in Jurassic World Rebirth. Seeing how it is returning to The Lost World‘s Isla Sorna, with new mutations similar to the Indominus Rex, the chances are high we could witness a return somewhat. Jurassic World Rebirth will hit theaters on July 2 with stars Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali, director Gareth Edwards, and the return of screenwriter David Koepp to the franchise.

Do you think Jurassic Park Rebirth will revive the franchise to its glory days? Let us know in the comments.

As the Jurassic World franchise enters a new era with this summer’s Jurassic World Rebirth, it’s been confirmed that there will be a new composer responsible for the musical score. According to Entertainment Weekly, Alexandre Desplat will be taking over for Michael Giacchino, who worked on all three installments of the original Jurassic World trilogy. Desplat talked about the “daunting task” of handling the music for such an iconic property, following the footsteps of not just Giacchino, but also John Williams. The Oscar-winning composer took it upon himself to find a way to pay homage to the past while also paving a new path forward that ties into the story director Gareth Edwards is telling.

“Every score John Williams has written has become an iconic score, so it’s quite a daunting task,” Desplat said. “At first, you’re excited, then panic comes along because you realize that you’re taking over from a fabulous composer who invented so many great things that the whole planet knows. You try to find your way through that. You try to make it your own, and at the same time, pay homage to Williams’ music, and try to find your own way through that by inventing new themes and ideas, but staying in the same artistic zone as the scores of the franchise.”

Over his career, Desplat has won two Oscars (The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Shape of Water) and been nominated for nine others. While this marks the first time he’s composing a Jurassic Park film, Desplat is no stranger to big-budget blockbusters. Among the previous credits on his filmography are two Harry Potter movies and 2014’s Godzilla.

Jurassic World Rebirth is slated to hit theaters on July 2nd. Edwards’ approach with the film is to take the franchise back to its roots with a tone and story reminiscent of the 1993 original. A recent promotional video for the film showed that the filmmakers are bringing the iconic river raft scene from the Michael Crichton novel to the big screen. That sequence was initially designed to be in the first film but was cut.

Giacchino is one of this era’s standout composers himself, with an Oscar win to his name (Up) and several other notable titles on his resume. However, it’s still exciting to see Desplat come aboard. Given the film’s position as a “rebirth” of sorts for the series, it makes sense to bring in a new voice for the music. Desplat will be able to inject some fresh blood into the score with his unique perspective while also tipping his hat to what’s come before. This isn’t the first time he’s been part of a franchise touched by John Williams’ legacy (Harry Potter), so he knows exactly what that job entails. Someone with his experience and gifts should be able to craft a memorable score.

Music is an integral part of the Jurassic Park movies, either capturing the sense of awe and wonder at seeing dinosaurs brought back to life or helping the action set pieces feel more exciting. Those iconic musical cues are arguably as vital to the franchise’s success as the groundbreaking visual effects. Considering that rich track record, it should be thrilling to hear what Desplat came up with. There will obviously be nods to Williams’ work, but he’ll have a chance to leave his own mark with some original tracks.

Jurassic Park has been stunning fans for over 32 years, yet we still find reasons to argue and debate about it. It shows this movie’s lasting impact, not just on one generation but several. Beyond elements like the Lysine contingency and how the T-Rex pen suddenly has a giant hole in it, one hotly debated moment surrounds the nature of the dinosaur eggs Dr. Alan Grant stumbles upon in the first movie. These eggs were the first significant indication that the breeding protocols didn’t work as intended. However, fans are confused, concerned, and argumentative about which type of eggs Grant actually found. Interestingly, the books didn’t leave this question up for debate, outright telling readers what kind of dinosaur laid the eggs. So now the question is, do we apply the book’s logic to the movie?

Any fan who’s watched their favorite novel get the adaptation treatment knows that significant changes can (and will) be made in the process, and Jurassic Park is no exception. For example, in Michael Crichton’s original book, John Hammond was a brutal capitalist, not some idealist who didn’t think his actions through. The movie also swapped around character traits and roles, resulting in a more even balance. While most fans can agree that the changes proved useful, it still raises the question of whether we can apply evidence from the books.

Jurassic Park’s Wild Egg Debate

Following a series of unforgettable events, Dr. Grant, Tim, and Lex begin their trek back to the park’s main welcome center, which they hope will bring them safety. At this point, Dr. Grant spots something very concerning – a nest of eggs. Given that the island is supposed to be full of female dinosaurs, it could be believable that these eggs are infertile, with one major exception, as they had hatched. If the cracked shells leave any doubt, the little footprints will erase any lingering misunderstanding. All of this is to say viewers learned alongside Grant that the failsafe was, well, failing.

Here’s where the big debate occurs, as the movie never explicitly states what type of dinosaur eggs they were. We can infer from the scene that the dinosaurs in question couldn’t be the Brachiosaurus; the eggs are too small, and the nest is tucked between two roots, so it’s just not possible. But that raises an even bigger question: What are they if they’re not Brachiosaurus eggs? Grant and the kids haven’t gotten that far, so we can probably assume they’re still in the same enclosure. This spells bad news for containment procedures.

Eagle-eyed fans quickly point out that the eggs portrayed in this scene are the same color, shape, and size as eggs seen in two other instances. The first occurred earlier in this movie when the crew watched the hatching of a baby Raptor. The second instance played a major role in Jurassic Park III. In this movie, Billy steals a few raptor eggs in hopes of earning extra funding for himself and Grant. This begins a whole subplot, but the key detail to focus on is the type of egg: Velociraptor eggs. It is probably the worst dinosaur to have lost and bred on the island.

A few passing phrases in Jurassic Park back this theory up. When introducing the raptors, the crew explains two key pieces of information. First, the raptors weren’t originally in this dense and high-security pen; they had been moved after testing out the fences. Second, they originally bred eight raptors. Slipping in that “originally” predisposes viewers to think about growing numbers.

Naturally, as this is an ongoing debate, some fans take issue with presenting these pieces of evidence as fact. After all, we have no proof that the eggs belong to Raptors. Likewise, we have no proof the Raptors ever escaped their enclosures before the system reboot. A lot has to line up to make this possible, so it feels too far-fetched. Plus, the smaller prints may indicate Gallimumus prints, which sounds believable, especially considering the herd that Grant and the kids soon encounter.

What the Jurassic Park Book Has to Say

As mentioned, the Jurassic Park novel doesn’t leave any room for interpretation regarding these eggs. In the book, the Raptors escaped fairly early in the process. It’s why mentioning eight of the dinosaurs at first is so important, because unobserved, these numbers went from eight to thirty-seven. Yes, many Raptors were free-roaming on the island at a certain point, so it’s easy to see how that posed quite a problem.

By being precise about these eggs, the Jurassic Park novel establishes a clear problem and sets up the sequel. However, we’re still divided on whether evidence from the books should be applied to the movie. As we already discussed, the adaptation made many changes to the novel’s plot, and it never outright told readers that the raptors escaped. There’s too much left open to interpretation for this case ever to be closed. Now, if Steven Spielberg would like to weigh in and close this debate once and for all, that would be fantastic.

Scarlett Johansson in Jurassic World Rebirth

A new promotional video for this summer’s Jurassic World Rebirth offers a tease of a scene that was cut from the original Jurassic Park. Featuring sound bites from members of the cast and crew, the primary objective of this video is to illustrate how Rebirth harkens back to the seminal 1993 classic, blending a sense of awe with a terrifying survival story. About halfway through the video, screenwriter David Koepp, who is returning to the franchise after penning the first two installments, opened up about a scene involving a river raft, discussing how it draws from the original Jurassic Park book by Michael Crichton.

“The sequence with the raft was in the first novel,” Koepp said. “One of the first things [executive producer Steven Spielberg] and I said was, ‘We gotta get that raft sequence in some place.'” Footage of Koepp’s interview is interspersed with clips of the scene in question, featuring characters frantically paddling in a raft. You can see the video in the space above.

The Jurassic Park novel includes a scene where Dr. Alan Grant, Lex, and Tim escape from a T-rex in a raft. During development of the movie adaptation, the sequence was storyboarded but never entirely filmed. It would have been a significant set piece for the blockbuster, showcasing the T-rex chasing its prey through the water.

Jurassic fans have known the raft sequence would be featured in Rebirth since February, when producer Frank Marshall confirmed its inclusion. It’s one of many connections to the original Jurassic Park in Rebirth. Not only is director Gareth Edwards looking to take the series back to its roots with regard to the tone, Rebirth‘s main setting is where the original Jurassic Park lab was located.

The raft scene is one of the standout parts of the book, but it’s easy to see why it was cut for the film. When Spielberg was making the original Jurassic Park, CGI was in its infancy. His special effects team were pushed to their limits when crafting the dinosaur sequences that are in the final product. Due to the technological limits of the era, it would have been borderline impossible to film — even for Spielberg. Considering how famous and scary the scene is in the novel, it would have been disappointing if the filmmakers fell short of realizing it for the big screen. It’s better Spielberg & Co. held off on including it in a Jurassic movie until now, as they’re able to utilize today’s advanced tools to pull it off in a way that should be satisfying.

As Universal gears up for Jurassic World Rebirth‘s July premiere, it’ll be interesting to see if the raft scene becomes a bigger focus of marketing. Studios like to build trailers and TV spots around big-budget spectacle, so it wouldn’t be surprising if the raft sequence became a centerpiece of promotion, highlighting the film’s scares and scope in a single scene. That said, it arguably might be for the best if it isn’t completely spoiled before audiences have a chance to see Jurassic World Rebirth on the big screen. This has the potential to be a special moment for the franchise, and holding off for just a few more months could pay off in spades.

Jurassic Park spared no expense — and John Hammond (Richard Attenborough). Steven Spielberg’s 1993 adaptation of author Michael Crichton’s novel sees the InGen CEO and co-founder “spare no expense” in hiring three experts — paleontologist Alan Grant (Sam Neill), paleobotanist Ellie Sattler (Laura Stern), and chaotician Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) — to sign off on his island, Isla Nublar. It’s the site of Jurassic Park, a theme park and zoo where the main attractions are dinosaurs cloned from paleo-DNA.

But when disgruntled Jurassic Park computer technician Dennis Nedry’s (Wayne Knight) sabotage causes the island’s facilities to shut down, freeing the dinosaurs to once more roam the Earth the island off the coast of Costa Rica, Nedry, lawyer Donald Gennaro (Martin Ferrero), game warden Robert Muldoon (Bob Peck), and chain-smoking chief engineer Ray Arnold (Samuel L. Jackson) all become casualties of a park preview gone wrong.

Hammond (who spared almost no expense except for his technician) survives, and ultimately escapes the island with his grandchildren Lex (Ariana Richards) and Tim (Joseph Mazzello). He then returns in the sequel, 1997’s The Lost World: Jurassic Park, which opens with a pack of Compsognathus attacking a young girl on Isla Sorna, a sister island 87 miles southeast of Nublar.

The girl survives, but later in the movie, dino-hunter Dieter Stark (Peter Stormare) isn’t as fortunate when he encounters the “compys.”

Life, uh, finds a way

It’s a fate inspired by Crichton’s original Jurassic Park novel, where Hammond dies when he’s swarmed by a pack of Procompsognathus (the book’s equivalent of the compys).

In the chapter “Hammond II,” Hammond has broken his ankle after falling down a hillside while en route to his bungalow. The 76-year-old tries and fails to climb the hill, only to hear the chitters of the chicken-sized scavengers that prey on crippled animals. The venomous bites of the compys overwhelm Hammond, and he dies feeling only a “slight pain” as the dinosaurs bite into his neck.

john hammond lives to see the end of jurassic park

David Koepp, screenwriter of 1993’s Jurassic Park, referenced Hammond’s original fate in the latest issue of Empire Magazine. The issue, commemorating the 50th anniversary of another Spielberg movie based on a novel about a man-eating creature — 1975’s Jaws — draws a comparison to author Peter Benchley’s novel. The movie dropped a novel subplot about Hooper (played by Richard Dreyfuss in the movie) having an affair with police chief Martin Brody’s (Roy Scheider) before being killed by the shark.

“Those sound like the sort of choices you need to make when you adapt a novel,” Koepp told Empire. “With Jurassic Park, the novel’s a bit darker than the film. The Richard Attenborough character [Hammond] dies in the book, eaten by his creations. And it just seemed like a downer.”

“We kinda like this guy; can’t he just learn his lesson?” Koepp said. “And that sounds like a similar choice [in Jaws]. You don’t need an affair. You have a great white shark. That’s a lot to work with.”

The Jurassic Park movie also softened Attenborough’s Hammond, who is more dismissive of the park’s employees and the deaths of workmen. In The Lost World novel, Malcolm remembers the late Hammond as a “hustler” whose only true talent was “making money.”

Koepp also penned new movie Jurassic World Rebirth, which stomps into theaters July 2.

Expect “thrillifying” news out Universal’s CinemaCon presentation. With the third day of the theater owners confab currently underway in Las Vegas, Universal Pictures and Focus Features will take over the stage at Caesars Palace’s Colosseum theater on Wednesday (from 3:45 p.m. PT to 5:30 p.m.) to preview a 2025 slate that includes anticipated sequels like Wicked: For Good and Jurassic World Rebirth; Blumhouse’s M3GAN 2.0, The Black Phone 2, and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2; and DreamWorks’ live-action How to Train Your Dragon remake, which screened in full exclusively for attendees ahead of a June premiere in theaters.

To recap: Universal and Focus follow Sony’s blockbuster showcase, which kicked off the four-day CinemaCon on Monday with the newly titled Spider-Man: Brand New Day and newly dated Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, plus the reveal of the Fab Four actors set to play the Beatles in four Sam Mendes-directed biopics.

Tuesday saw Lionsgate announce a slew of sequels, including the Keanu Reeves-fronted John Wick: Chapter 5, a spinoff centered on Donnie Yen’s Caine, and an animated Wick prequel movie, plus a new Hunger Games prequel movie and not one but two Now You See Me sequels. Warner Bros. underwhelmed with a “Big Picture” presentation with new footage from James Gunn’s Superman and Warner Bros. Animation’s The Cat in the Hat reboot, but little in the way of announcements beyond animated Tom & Jerry, Flintstones, and Looney Tunes movies.

“At Universal, we don’t buy franchises; we build them from the ground up, working with the most innovative, bold and kinetic filmmakers and actors in the industry,” said Jim Orr, President, Domestic Theatrical Distribution, Universal Pictures. “Our 2025 slate stands as a testament to our commitment to cinema that shatters the mold and to movies that invite audiences into your theaters… and then to places they never imagined.”

Following the release of the Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes thriller Drop (April 11), about a widowed single mom (The White Lotus‘ Meghann Fahy) who is terrorized by anonymous messages dropped to her phone, Universal will bring the live-action reimagining of How to Train Your Dragon (June 13) to theaters with HTTYD trilogy director Dean DeBlois.

After the first M3GAN 2.0 teaser trailer danced online during the Grammys in February, Universal will deliver an update on Blumhouse and Atomic Monster’s A.I. mean girl (June 27). Another franchise roaring back to life is Jurassic World Rebirth (July 2), from director Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) and writer David Koepp (the original Jurassic Park). The action-packed new chapter sees an extraction team — played by Scarlett Johansson (the Avengers movies), Jonathan Bailey (Wicked), and Mahershala Ali (Marvel’s Blade reboot) — race to the most dangerous place on Earth: an abandoned island research facility inhabited by the most lethal creatures in history.

DreamWorks Animation’s The Bad Guys 2 (August 11) — featuring the voices of Sam Rockwell, Anthony Ramos, Awkwafina, and Craig Robinson, who are joined by Danielle Brooks, Maria Bakalova, and Natasha Lyonne as The Bad Girls — will steal a segment of the showcase, followed by DreamWorks’ Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie (Sept. 26).

Also hitting theaters later this summer is 87North’s Nobody 2 (Aug. 15), which again stars Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul) as everyman and former assassin Hutch Mansell. From Blumhouse, Ethan Hawke and Mason Thames will once again answer the call for Black Phone 2 (Oct. 17), and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 (Dec. 5) will unleash another level of animatronic terror with director Emma Tammi (2023’s FNAF movie) based on Scott Cawthon’s video game series.

Finally, Universal will return to the Land of Oz for Wicked 2. The followup to last year’s musical blockbuster, Wicked: For Good (Nov. 21) again stars Oscar nominees Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda, a.k.a. the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good.

Alan Grant confronting the T-Rex in the original Jurassic Park (1993)

Whenever a new feature in the Jurassic Park saga drops its first trailer, you can expect plenty of nods to the previous movies. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’s first teaser, for example, culminated in Jeff Goldblum’s Ian Malcolm solemnly intoning “life finds a way.” Jurassic World Rebirth, meanwhile, kicked off its first trailer with a shot evoking that Jurassic Park image of the T-Rex roaring while the “When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth” fell in the foreground. Fittingly for a franchise about beasts from eons ago, the Jurassic Park marketing machine always begins with reminders of yesteryear.

But what about the very first Jurassic Park movie? This 1993 adaptation of the original Michael Crichton novel had no other installments to build off of. There was no pre-existing John Williams theme or famous John Hammond lines it could co-opt. The film version of Jurassic Park instead introduced audiences to this universe with a marketing method common to pre-21st century blockbusters. This involved eschewing showing any footage from the final film, but it still produced one of the all-time great teaser trailers, nonetheless.

What Is The Jurassic Park Teaser Trailer?

This Jurassic Park teaser, running 100 seconds, is initially set in an environment only briefly glimpsed at in the final film. The trailer immediately plunges viewers into the mines where folks frantically look for any organisms that could have dinosaur DNA. The teaser’s imagery shows one miner finding something in stone, which turns out to be a meticulously preserved mosquito with dinosaur blood in its veins. A momentous score accompanying these images emphasizes the staggering importance of what’s happening onscreen.

The teaser concludes with the camera slowly pulling in on a microscope as a polished-sounding narrator intones how the first evidence of dinosaur DNA was found “in the spring of 1990, from a mine in South America came a piece of amber containing the fossilized remains of a prehistoric mosquito.” As the camera zooms in on the preserved mosquito (with viewers getting an intimate look at the insect’s pupils), the score doubles down on ominous noises as the narrator notes that this bug allowed scientists to recreate dinosaurs. “Man and dinosaur shared the Earth. It happened at a place called … Jurassic Park.” Cue the now-famous Jurassic Park logo, with the trailer announcer promising that “next summer, director Steven Spielberg will take you there.”

There’s no Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, or even dinosaurs in sight in this teaser, yet this initial piece of Jurassic Park marketing engrossed the imagination. Showing the practical process of unearthing these mosquitoes just makes it feel extra tangible that everything onscreen could really happen. The specific dates and locations invoked for the history of dinosaur DNA reconstruction only heighten this authenticity. Concluding on a note reinforcing Spielberg’s reputation as a master of cinematic spectacle is a perfect way to close out this teaser. Who needs to see spoilery Jurassic Park images when the combination of this compelling premise and filmmaker is enough to communicate that something special is brewing?

These Kinds of Teasers Used To Be More Common

It’s hard to imagine the Jurassic Park teaser trailer even getting proposed, let alone released, today. The modern movie marketing ecosystem is all about launching trailers full of footage from the actual film so that online speculation can run rampant about potential Easter eggs, surprise cameos, or sequel teases hiding in plain sight. The showmanship and restraint in the Jurassic Park teaser are absent from the 2020s movie marketing machine, but it wasn’t always this way.

On the contrary, the Jurassic Park teaser reflected the standard way most massive blockbuster kicked off their movie marketing campaigns. The 1990s especially saw a wave of expensive features introduce themselves to the public with footage shot exclusively for a teaser. T2: Judgement Day, Total Recall, and 1998’s Godzilla are perfect examples of this phenomenon. Movies had longer promotional campaigns back in the day, while the internet speculation machine didn’t exist yet. In this landscape, teasers that functioned as mini-standalone movies were a go-to way of drumming up excitement.

Though this trend lasted until 2001 with Spider-Man, this just isn’t how movies are promoted anymore. Taking the time to create fresh teasers reflecting an individual motion picture’s aesthetic is not something studios have any patience for anymore. That just makes the Jurassic Park teaser all the more incredible to absorb. It’s a time capsule of craftsmanship and showmanship, not to mention a fittingly excellent trailer for a movie as outstanding as Jurassic Park.

Jurassic Park is now streaming on Starz and Hulu.

Fandango has released its list of the most anticipated movies this summer, and the film claiming the top spot may surprise you. The Top 10 list is filled with familiar franchises and superhero fare, from Marvel to DC to Mission: Impossible to John Wick to Jurassic World, just to name a few. One would assume that big-budget remakes of Fantastic Four and Superman would fight it out for box office dominance, but a surprising contender has risen to the top to be the #1 film on the minds of moviegoers for the summer. But that doesn’t mean these superhero films are far behind, still making it into the Top 5.

The Top 10 Most Anticipated Summer Movies in Fandango’s list is led by Jurassic World Rebirth, followed by The Fantastic Four: First Steps in second place, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning in third place, Superman in fourth place, and Thunderbolts* in fifth place. The list is rounded out by From The World of John Wick: Ballerina in sixth place, 28 Years Later in seventh place, How to Train Your Dragon in eighth place, Lilo & Stitch in ninth place, and Freakier Friday in tenth place. You can check out the full list below.

The top 10 most anticipated summer movies are:

  1. Jurassic World Rebirth
  2. The Fantastic Four: First Steps
  3. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning
  4. Superman
  5. Thunderbolts*
  6. From The World of John Wick: Ballerina
  7. 28 Years Later
  8. How to Train Your Dragon
  9. Lilo & Stitch
  10. Freakier Friday

These results come from Fandango’s annual Moviegoing Trends & Insights Study as the industry gears up for CinemaCon, running March 31-April 3 in Las Vegas. The online movie ticketing service surveyed over 5,000 moviegoers and split them between Loyal Moviegoers — those who saw five or more movies in theaters in 2024 — and Casual Moviegoers — those who saw fewer than four movies in theaters in 2024.

“As consumers’ appetite and interests continue to evolve, understanding moviegoing behaviors is essential to find new areas of opportunity and help drive industry growth,” said Jerramy Hainline, EVP of Fandango. “With a diverse slate of upcoming films, from superhero epics to action thrillers to cult classic sequels, this summer is proving to have something for all movie fans.”

Loyal Moviegoers made up 41% of the survey sample, seeing an average of 10 movies in 2024. The statistics say they are most likely to be millennials or Gen X, and most likely male. Casual Moviegoers represented 59% of the survey sample, saw an average of two movies in 2024, and are likely to be Gen Z and female.

It may come as a surprise that neither The Fantastic Four: First Steps or Superman is the most anticipated movie for Summer 2025. Comic book fans like to think that the world revolves around their favorite heroes, but apparently, that isn’t the case. The Jurassic Park/Jurassic World franchise continues to churn out films that audiences look forward to.

Jurassic World Rebirth is something of a soft reboot for the franchise. Its narrative takes place five years after the events of 2022’s disappointing and critically panned Jurassic World Dominion. Directed by Gareth Edwards, the film stars Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, Mahershala Ali, Rupert Friend, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Luna Blaise, David Iacono, and Audrina Miranda.

Jurassic World Rebirth hits theaters on July 2nd. Let us know what your most anticipated movie of Summer 2025 is in the comments below!

Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park is an all-time dinosaur movie classic, but there’s one plot hole in the movie that has eluded fans for thirty years. Now though, some fans think they’ve found an explanation. Based upon Michael Crichton’s 1990 novel of the same name, Jurassic Park centers on a group of scientists and kids brought in as the first test audience for a theme park populated by dinosaurs, brought back to life in modern times through cloning technology. Unfortunately, a power mishap shuts down the park’s electrified fences, allowing the dinos to escape, including the fearsome Tyrannosaurus Rex in one of the most iconic dinosaur movie scenes of all time.

While the T-Rex’s escape scene still thrills and scares with the same power today as it did in 1993, many audiences have noticed one issue with the environment it takes place in. When the scene begins, the ground inside of the T-Rex’s paddock looks to be level with the ground outside of it, yet the scene culminates in the T-Rex pushing one of the two tour cars over a cliff inside of the paddock that was previously not there. Naturally, that has only left the fan theory mill to churn endlessly on where the cliff inside of the T-Rex paddock came from, and in a recent post by user Specialist-Ad-5300 on the official Jurassic Park subreddit, some fans seemingly have come up with the perfect explanation. The question is, are they on the money? Or is it one big pile of…

Fans Think They’ve Figured Out Where The T-Rex Paddock Cliff Came From In Jurassic Park

The fan theory of the cliffside’s sudden arrival inside of the T-Rex paddock posits that there may have been a built-in cliffside inside of the area all along. In the post, a bird’s eye view blueprint of the T-Rex paddock lays out both the location of the two Jurassic Park tour cars when they stop in front of the paddock, and the section inside of the paddock that the T-Rex pushed the first car into. As seen in this blueprint, there is a large concrete moat on the far side of the paddock, with a deep drop to its right. This indicates that in pushing the car over, spinning it in on its top, and eventually pushing it over the edge, the T-Rex also inadvertently shoved the car right in front of the section of the paddock where the cliff was located.

As an added outline of the scene, the Reddit post also includes aerial artwork from inside the paddock, showing the two cars on their side of the fence, the T-Rex approaching the area of the fence she broke through, and the concrete moat and cliffside to her right. With these two outlines, many Jurassic Park fans believe it is now possible to account for the cliff’s sudden appearance in the movie’s T-Rex escape scene, with the T-Rex simply exiting the paddock in an area where the ground was flush with the outside of the paddock, and pushing the car into the section with a huge drop. However, this doesn’t mean that the makers of Jurassic Park were thinking along these lines while making the movie.

Jurassic Park Photos Debunk This Fan Theory As Being Official (But It’s Still A Good Explanation)

While it’s a compelling and decidedly persuasive explanation for why there is a cliff inside of the T-Rex paddock that didn’t seem to be there before, footage from Jurassic Park itself unfortunately rules the idea out. When the two Jurassic Park tours cars first arrive at the T-Rex paddock (seen in another Reddit post made by user waber_mattie), the area of the T-Rex’s paddock referenced in the two aerial outlines is visible. In this image, it can clearly be seen that the ground throughout the T-Rex paddock is flush with the ground outside of the paddock, including in the area where the cliffside and concrete moat would have ostensibly been situated.

Additionally, either of the two blueprints being official concept art for Jurassic Park has already been officially debunked by Jurassic Park visual effects supervisor Phil Tippett. The aerial photo of the T-Rex inside of the paddock was circulating on Twitter/X as far back as 2023, with Tippet quote-tweeting a user claiming that animatics were created of the T-Rex dragging the car through the mud, with the shot specifically inserted in the animatic by Tippet to account for the cliff’s presence in the scene, but that this part of the scene itself was never filmed. In his quote tweet, Tippett responded “Re: The image below. I never saw it and dealt a lot with Rick Carter the Production Designer. 99.9% sure it a fan thing.” While Tippett’s .01 margin of error might leave the slimmest of possibilities of the aerial artwork being official, it’s about as official a debunking as one can get.

In the end, the blueprint and the fan art of the T-Rex paddock might not be officially sanctioned as canon to the movie by the makers of Jurassic Park, but they are nonetheless impressive layouts to account for the continuity discrepancy of the cliff only being inside of the paddock when the T-Rex pushes the car over. In all, it’s pretty easy for fans to head canon the two aerial layouts to explain the plot hole, even if it does mean attributing the view of the ground inside of the paddock level with the ground outside as being a minor continuity gaffe. Steven Spielberg, however, has another arguably much better explanation.

Steven Spielberg Had The Perfect Response To The Cliff Continuity Error In Jurassic Park

Fans aren’t the only ones to have noticed the cliff inside of the T-Rex paddock appearing out of nowhere. Per Jurassic Park‘s official Making Of Book, co-writer David Koepp actually asked Spielberg directly “Aren’t we going to wonder where the cliff came from?” Spielberg then replied to Koepp “There’s a T-Rex right there!”, indicating Spielberg’s belief that the presence of a towering pre-historic predator like the Tyrannosaurus Rex would be where the audience’s attention would be locked for the duration of the scene. In essence, Spielberg prioritized believability over realism in this scene, and with the T-Rex escape scene still standing as the most iconic Jurassic Park T-Rex scene of all time, it’s hard to argue he was wrong.

This wasn’t the first time Spielberg had determined that believability was of greater importance than plausibility. In the 1995 Making of Jaws documentary, Jaws author Peter Benchley described when Spielberg laid out his plans to give Jaws a “big, rousing ending.” The shark’s demise in Benchley’s novel comes after the shark finally dies of its mortal wounds just before being able to eat Sherriff Martin Brody and sinking to the bottom of the ocean, with Spielberg changing it to the ending of Brody shooting an oxygen tank inside the shark’s mouth, causing it to explode. Despite Benchley feeling that Spielberg’s ending was “completely unbelievable,” Spielberg told Benchley “I don’t care. If I’ve got them for two hours, they will believe whatever I do for the next three minutes, because I’ve got them in my hands, and I want the audience on their feet screaming at the end ‘Yes! Yes! Yes! This is what should happen to this animal!” In the end, Benchley conceded “He was right, I was wrong in this entire argument” regarding the ending of Jaws.

As with Jurassic Park 18 years later, Jaws became the highest-grossing movie ever made at the time, and both are testimony to Spielberg’s skill as popcorn moviemaking and storytelling. In some cases, a writer and director may need to sacrifice some amount of logic or realism in order to tell a compelling story or deliver the most dynamic and exciting action sequence possible for the audience. The cliff inside of the T-Rex’s paddock simply appearing out of thin air falls into this category. It might be a hiccup in the geography presented on-screen previously, but the T-Rex’s escape is that much more terrifying when Dr. Grant and Lex dodge the falling Jurassic Park tour car by mere inches as it falls sixty feet into a tree below with Tim still inside. The efforts of fans to account for the cliff’s presence in Jurassic Park‘s T-Rex escape demonstrate the talent that devoted fans have for fan art and analysis of their favorite movies, but for Steven Spielberg, all that ever mattered was making the T-Rex as scary a monster as possible, an endeavor he and Jurassic Park unequivocally succeeded at.

Jurassic Park is available to stream on Starz.

Jurassic World Dinosaur Fossils: Tyrannosaurus rex (T.rex) #76968

The LEGO lineup for March 2025 is substantial, but it lacked a real blockbuster set – until now. The LEGO Group and Universal Products and Experiences have launched the Jurassic World Dinosaur Fossils: Tyrannosaurus rex (T.rex) #76968 set. It will be the largest in the Jurassic World collection at 3,145 pieces, and will produce a detailed T. rex fossil skeleton that will measure more than 3 feet in length when complete. Everything you need to know about adding it to your collection can be found below.

The T.rex set will feature a movable head, opening jaw, and posable arms and tail for custom posing along with a display stand and an information plaque. There will also be an Easter egg or two, like a hidden amber piece. Speaking of Easter eggs based on the films, LEGO has done something special with the minifigures by including Dr. Ellie Sattler and Dr. Alan Grant in this set based on the characters’ appearances in the original 1993 Jurassic Park film.

Honestly, this is the direction that we hoped LEGO would go in after releasing the Dinosaur Fossils: T.rex skull and Triceratops skull sets. If you want to get your hands on it, make sure to sign up for a LEGO Insiders account (it’s free) and grab one right here at the LEGO Shop. It is now available to purchase in early access priced at $249.99. Non-members will be able to purchase it at the same time and in the same place on March 15th. Note that a wave of LEGO sets inspired by Jurassic World Rebirth are on the way for June 1st. Details about those sets can be found here.

You can find many of the upcoming LEGO releases here in the “Coming Soon” section on the LEGO website.  After the launch, they will shift here in the “Available Now” section. Some of the new releases will be available here on Amazon, but in most cases you’ll want to stick with LEGO to take advantage of their special offers. You can also take a first look at LEGO sets inspired by the upcoming Jurassic World Rebirth right here. The official synopsis for the movie can be found below.

“Five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, theplanet’s ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs. Those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived. The three most colossal creatures within that tropical biosphere hold the key to a drug thatwill bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind. Academy Award nominee Scarlett Johansson plays skilled covert operations expert Zora Bennett, contracted to lead a skilled team on a top-secret mission tosecure genetic material from the world’s three most massive dinosaurs.

“When Zora’s operation intersects with a civilian family whose boating expedition was capsized by marauding aquatic dinos, they all find themselves stranded on an island where they come face-to-face with a sinister, shocking discovery that’s been hidden from the world for decades.”

Jurassic World Rebirth will hit theaters on July 2nd.

Scarlett Johansson is one of the rare Hollywood A-listers who does not have a social media presence, and she wasn’t going to change that to promote the upcoming Jurassic World Rebirth. In a wide-ranging interview with InStyle, the Oscar-nominated actress discussed her feelings about social media and revealed that Universal had asked her to start an Instagram account to help raise awareness for Jurassic World Rebirth‘s impending release. While acknowledging that there are benefits to using social media platforms (Johansson has appeared on posts shared by her skincare company, The Outset), she doesn’t enjoy social media enough to make it part of her personal life.

“I mean, even today, I got an email from Universal [Pictures], and they’re like, ‘Hey, would you consider joining Instagram in tandem with the release of Jurassic World Rebirth?’” Johansson said. “[I] get a lot of pressure to join social media.” She also stated she doesn’t believe she could “stay true to who I am” if she was on social media.

“The work that I put out there is all based in truth. That’s the key ingredient,” she added. “So if I was a person who really enjoyed social media, then I could totally get on the bandwagon. But I’m not. And I think the film will do fine.”

Johansson stars in Jurassic World Rebirth as Zora Bennett, a covert ops specialist who embarks on a dangerous mission to secure DNA samples from the largest dinosaur species on Earth to aid in the development of a drug that can save lives. Directed by Gareth Edwards, the film is scheduled to hit theaters in July. The cast also includes the likes of Mahershala Ali, Jonathan Bailey, and Rupert Friend.

Ahead of the movie’s premiere, Universal has been revving up the promotional campaign. February saw the release of the first official Rebirth trailer, which highlighted the film’s terrifying dinosaurs. The studio also promoted the blockbuster during this year’s Super Bowl, releasing a TV spot.

Johansson’s assessment that Jurassic World Rebirth will “do fine” should pan out. All three installments of the original Jurassic World trilogy grossed over $1 billion at the worldwide box office, despite earning mixed reviews. Based on that track record, Rebirth is poised to be one of the top earners of the year, kicking off what should be a busy July at the multiplex (Superman and The Fantastic Four: First Steps also come out that month). Releasing over the always lucrative Fourth of July weekend should be a boon for Rebirth, even if word-of-mouth isn’t the strongest. For over 30 years, the Jurassic Park franchise has been one of Hollywood’s premier properties.

Whether or not Johansson starts an Instagram account shouldn’t have any bearing on Rebirth‘s ticket sales. Still, it’s easy to see why Universal was interested in getting its star on the platform. Thanks to her work with Marvel and in other high-profile projects, Johansson has a sizable fan base, meaning she’d be able to reach millions of people directly on Instagram. If she had joined social media, she probably wouldn’t have had to post anything too in-depth or personal; she could have used the account strictly for promoting Rebirth by sharing clips and photos from events. But her stance on social media as a whole is understandable, and Rebirth should be just fine this summer.

We all watch movies like Jurassic Park and Jurassic World and marvel at the possibilities of bringing back animals and creators from the history books into the present day, and now Colossal Biosciences has made a massive step towards doing just that. Colossal Biosciences has achieved a huge milestone in advanced multiplexed genome engineering with the birth of the Colossal Woolly Mouse, who have been engineered to express multiple key mammoth-like traits that allow it to adapt to life in cold climates. You can get an up-close look at the Woolly Mice below.

These mice have been created with altered coat color, texture, and thickness, which are all reminiscent the woolly mammoth’s core phenotypes. This is a huge step in showing the feasibility of expressing traits using all of the information learned from computational analysis of 59 wooly, Columbian, and steppe mammoth genomes, which range from 3,500 to over 1,200,000 years old. These are all crucial targets for mammoth de-extinction.

Colossal’s mammoth team explored a data set of 121 mammoth and elephant genomes, identifying significant genes that impact hair and other cold-adaptation traits. The official release states that the team focused on a suite of genes in which mammoths had evolved fixed differences compared to their closely related Asian elephant cousins, and then refined the list to include ten genes related to hair length, thickness, texture, and color as well as lipid metabolism that were compatible with expressions in a mouse.

The team then edited the mouse genome using a combination of three editing technologies, including RNP-mediated knockout, multiplex precious genome editing, and precision homology-directed repair (HDR). Those edits were made simultaneously, and some of the editing efficiencies were as high as 100% to modify seven genes.

“The Colossal Woolly Mouse marks a watershed moment in our de-extinction mission,” said Ben Lamm, Co-Founder and CEO of Colossal Biosciences. “By engineering multiple cold-tolerant traits from mammoth evolutionary pathways into a living model species, we’ve proven our ability to recreate complex genetic combinations that took nature millions of years to create. This success brings us a step closer to our goal of bringing back the woolly mammoth.”

“The Colossal Woolly Mouse showcases our ability to use the latest genome editing tools and approaches to drive predictable phenotypes,” said Dr. Beth Shapiro, Chief Science Officer at Colossal. “It is an important step toward validating our approach to resurrecting traits that have been lost to extinction and that our goal is to restore.”

“I’m incredibly proud of what our team has accomplished here in the lab in such a short period of time,” said Dr. Michael Abrams, who co-leads Colossal’s Mammoth Team. “We’ve pushed the boundaries of genetic engineering by coordinating multiple complex trait modifications in living animals with exceptionally high efficiency. This achievement showcases both the technical expertise of our scientists and the power of our genetic engineering platform to deliver predictable phenotypes.”

“The Colossal Woolly Mouse demonstrates remarkable progress we’ve made in precise genome engineering, including optimized delivery methods, innovative multiplexing and combinations of gene targeting strategies,” said George Church, Professor of Genetics at the Wyss Institute and Harvard Medical School and Co-founder of Colossal. “We are showing that we can now rationally design and construct complex genetic adaptations, with profound implications for the future of multi-gene de-extinction and engineering.”

Fans will have a chance to hear from Lamm and actor and producer Joe Manganiello in a special keynote at SXSW today at 2 pm CT to talk about the implications of the Woolly Mouse and it’s impact on Colossal’s de-extinction efforts.

With Jurassic World Rebirth arriving ten years after Jurassic World’s debut, audiences will officially have experienced more Jurassic installments over the last decade than they did in the first 21 years after Jurassic Park’s release. Today, it’s easy to forget, but there was a time when countless obstacles seemed to make it a foregone conclusion that Jurassic Park would remain a trilogy. The days of a raptor exclaiming “Alan!” in Jurassic Park III seemed destined to be the grand final of this saga. With problems like the passing of Jurassic Park author Michael Crichton, creative changes behind the scenes, and The Great Recession, these dinos faced no shortage of obstacles in evading cinematic extinction.

Jurassic World would eventually arrive in June 2015 and shatter box office expectations across the globe. For many, it seemed like an inevitable next step for the franchise to explore what would happen if a version of Jurassic Park actually opened. Getting to that narrative, though, was a long and winding road that included a now infamous alternate Jurassic Park 4 script that was nothing short of bonkers.

What Was The Plot of This Proposed Jurassic Park 4?

jurassic-world-dominion.jpg

In the eons between Jurassic Park III and Jurassic World, multiple different ideas for how to extend the franchise were considered. Some explicitly continued the world of Jurassic Park III by further exploring the world of Dr. Alan Grant. However, the most famous unmade version of Jurassic Park 4 was written by director John Sayles. In his career, Sayles is most well-known for socially conscious and intimate works like Matewan and Lone Star. However, Sayles cut his teeth as a screenwriter on cheapie Roger Corman genre films like Piranha and Battle Beyond the Stars.

Sayles would evoke those roots with his absolutely unhinged concept for a fourth Jurassic Park adventure. This production would’ve focused on an almost exclusively new cast of characters grappling with a new biological threat: dinosaurs spliced with human DNA’s. These creatures were supposed to be the ideal soldiers, since they could handle weapons like human beings but had all the ferocity of a dinosaur. Leaked concept art for the film shows that this idea would not have been grounded in reality visually. Jurassic Park 4 was committed to humanoid creatures that had T-Rex teeth, scales, and other dinosaur flourishes.

The feature envisioned by Sales would’ve apparently concluded with those dinosaur soldiers (while trying to rescue a girl taken hostage by evildoers) gaining autonomy and betraying the normal human characters. Life finds a way and wouldn’t you know it, dinosaurs chowing down on humans overly confident in their ability to control nature also finds a way. This vision of Jurassic Park 4 would’ve been a massive departure from everything that preceded this feature in the Jurassic Park franchise. Perhaps it was too audacious, as this version of the production would eventually fall apart. It would take until the early 2010s for Jurassic Park 4 to gain any more momentum.

Would This Project Have Improved on Jurassic World?

chris-pratt-jurassic-world-fallen-kingdom-indiana-jones.jpg

Decades after Sayles wrote this bananas screenplay, it’s worth asking whether or not his version of Jurassic Park 4 sounds superior to the Jurassic World audiences got in June 2015. That’s a difficult comparison given that one of these projects exists only as a screenplay and the other is a finished film. Who knows if this earlier iteration of Jurassic Park 4 would’ve maintained all its endearing madness to its final cut. However, on a conceptual level, this does sound like a much more entertaining and fearless ride than the more nostalgic-centric Jurassic World.

While Colin Trevorrow’s 2015 follow-up was very focused on reminding people of the past, the vision of Jurassic Park 4 from Sayles and company sounds like a total upending of expectations of what a Jurassic Park movie even looks like. It could’ve delivered beasts, visuals, and types of action sequences we still haven’t seen in this franchise. Plus, this iteration of Jurassic Park 4 would’ve fully committed to audacious ideas like dinosaur/human hybrid soldiers.

That’s a welcome stark contrast to how the Jurassic World movies keep waking back potentially game-changing notions for the saga like Fallen Kingdom’s fizzled-out cliffhanger of dinosaurs getting out into the human world. Though it certainly would’ve been divisive, this version of Jurassic Park 4 sounds like something that would’ve inspired livelier discussions and responses than the Jurassic World just serving up what audiences knew they wanted. That very quality, alas, is likely why Universal and Amblin opted to pass on this concept for a sequel. Who knows, though. Given how frequently Jurassic World sequels are being made nowadays, perhaps some of the concepts in that Jurassic Park 4 script will manifest in future installments of the saga.

Jurassic World Rebirth arrives in theaters on July 2.

Jurassic Park

Jurassic Park fans on Reddit have overwhelmingly expressed their desire for a faithful adaptation of Michael Crichton’s original novels as a television series. In a discussion that gained significant traction on the r/JurassicPark subreddit, fans were asked whether they would prefer a two-season show that adapts the first two books with complete accuracy or a ground-up remake of Fallen Kingdom and Dominion with the benefit of hindsight. The timing of this conversation is particularly relevant as Universal Pictures prepares for the July release of Jurassic World: Rebirth, which promises to return to the franchise’s horror roots while still maintaining continuity with previous films.

Despite Steven Spielberg’s 1993 classic being widely regarded as one of the greatest blockbusters ever made, the film took significant liberties with its source material. Crichton’s novel presents a considerably darker tale with more explicit violence, different character fates, and deeper scientific and philosophical discussions that the runtime of a feature film couldn’t accommodate. Reddit user Dener_ emphasized this point, noting that a TV adaptation should be “awesome, full on 18+ gory,” highlighting the appetite for a more mature take on the material. Another fan, shberk01, specifically mentioned wanting to see book-exclusive sequences finally realized on screen: “The T. Rex stalking Grant and the kids along the river, the camouflaging Carno, Hammond’s end. Spare no expense!”

[RELATED: Jurassic Park’s Wildest Story Wasn’t in a Movie, And ’90s Fans Know It]

The discussion revealed overwhelming support for the TV adaptation option, with many fans specifically calling for HBO to handle the project, citing the network’s success with other adaptations. “Two seasons on HBO adapting the novels,” wrote CyanRC, with another user adding, “This is important. HBO, NOT Amazon.” User All-In-Red proposed, “Novel, 100%. Follow it as closely as possible. Horror and gore. They could do it in the same style as Chernobyl. A limited series, showing the different chapters.” The comparison to HBO’s Chernobyl miniseries format appeared multiple times, suggesting fans are looking for a prestige television approach rather than another blockbuster interpretation.

The potential for a properly atmospheric horror take on the material also emerged as a key desire among fans. User Salty-Dragonfly2189 stated, “I want the first two books, and I want it as a horror/thriller like it was meant to be.” Numerous commenters echoed this sentiment, specifically mentioning the need for a TV-MA approach that embraces the more terrifying aspects of dinosaurs as predators, something the films have increasingly moved away from in favor of action sequences and broader global storylines.

How Jurassic World: Rebirth Tries to Satisfy Fans While a True Novel Adaptation Remains Elusive

While Jurassic World: Rebirth appears to be attempting to recapture some of the original film’s magic by amping up the horror, it still represents a continuation of the film universe rather than a fresh adaptation of Crichton’s work. The upcoming movie, starring Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali, follows a team heading to an island research facility from the original Jurassic Park to secure genetic material for medical purposes before becoming stranded with the prehistoric creatures. The return of original screenwriter David Koepp suggests an attempt to reconnect with the franchise’s origins, but it remains firmly within the established film continuity rather than starting fresh with the novels.

The Reddit discussion illuminates the fact that after nearly 30 years and six films, many fans still believe the truest and most compelling version of Jurassic Park remains unpictured on screen. User TheDeadlySpaceman even expressed interest in seeing a truly faithful adaptation including Ian Malcolm’s death: “I would actually prefer it if they just did that part completely accurately.” This sentiment reflects a broader desire among the fan base for content that prioritizes the intellectual and horror aspects of the concept over blockbuster spectacle. Sadly, while Universal retains the rights over Crichton’s work, it seems the studio is solely interested in expanding its successful franchise.

Jurassic World: Rebirth hits theaters on July 2nd.

Steven Spielberg on the set of West Side Story

Steven Spielberg‘s filmography features some of history’s greatest movies, but there are still some other titles that don’t get been celebrated enough. Spanning numerous genres from sci-fi to historical drama, the legendary director’s resume boasts over 30 feature-length films across five decades. A three-time Oscar winner, Spielberg has cemented his legacy in Hollywood as the pioneer of the modern blockbuster, with his most recognized projects including his four Indiana Jones movies, Schindler’s List, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, and E.T the Extra-Terrestrial. Due to his high number of films, some of them have gone overlooked. Thus, Spielberg has several underrated gems in his arsenal, and fans should take the opportunity to check them out.

These three Spielberg films deserve a lot more appreciation from movie fans.

Bridge of Spies

Tom Hanks, Mark Rylance, and Billy Magnussen in Bridge of Spies

Spielberg’s 2015 legal drama is inspired by the Cold War-era true story of James B. Donavan (Tom Hanks), a lawyer representing KGB spy Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance). James is tasked with negotiating the exchange of Rudolf for Francis Gary Powers (Austin Stowell), a CIA operative who was shot down over the Soviet Union while piloting a spy mission. Bridge of Spies takes true history and crafts a riveting narrative full of tension and thrills, despite lacking the action spectacle of Spielberg’s most famous war movie, Saving Private Ryan.

Bridge of Spies is one of numerous collaborations between Hanks and Spielberg, and the star makes another major statement his performance. Rylance, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of Rudolf in Bridge of Spies, also forms a great duo with Hanks. Beyond its entertainment value, Bridge of Spies serves as a touching reminder of the value of compassion. Despite many around James viewing him as a traitor for defending a Soviet Spy, he never loses his humanity. The relationship of respect and trust that James and Rudolf build together sits at the heart of Bridge of Spies, despite the movie’s label as an espionage thriller. Audiences in search of a powerful and heartwarming story will find a masterful piece of storytelling here.

Bridge of Spies is available to rent or purchase on various VOD platforms.

Catch Me If You Can

Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks sitting across from each other at a desk in Catch Me If You Can

Despite the leading star power of Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio, 2002’s Catch Me If You Can remains largely under-appreciated in comparison to Spielberg’s other prominent titles of the era. The film tells the story of con artist Frank Abagnale Jr. (DiCaprio), whose autobiography of the same name inspired Catch Me If You Can. An exhilarating cat and mouse game, the movie follows FBI agent Carl Hanratty’s (Hanks) repeated attempts to halt Frank’s criminal exploits.

Spielberg’s savvy direction injects a pleasant dose of humor into Catch Me If You Can‘s eccentric narrative. Furthermore, DiCaprio’s portrayal of the charismatic and quick-witted young Frank is delightful to watch. The accuracy Catch Me If You Can‘s events has been disputed for quite some time, but audiences will hardly care. Fictitious or not, the movie is wildly entertaining, guaranteeing a fun time for viewers. Catch Me If You Can vastly differs from the quintessential Spielberg action or sci-fi blockbuster, though it stands out on the acclaimed director’s resume thanks to its enjoyable screenplay, lively acting performances, and uncanny style.

Catch Me If You Can is streaming on Paramount+.

Amistad

Matthew McConaughey and Djimon Hounsou in Amistad

1997’s Amistad begins with an inspiring revolt of captive African men, women, and children on a Spanish slave ship turns into a gripping courtroom drama. Set in 1839 and based on a true story, the film chronicles the Mende tribespeople’s legal battle for the right to return home after being captured by an American vessel. An outstanding breakout performance by Djimon Hounsou as the uprising’s leader Joseph Cinqué leads the impressive cast, with Matthew McConaughey’s attorney Roger Sherman Baldwin, Anthony Hopkins‘ U.S. Representative John Quincy Adams, and Morgan Freeman’s fictional former slave Theodore Joadson also serving as sound interpretations. Amistad was Chiwetel Ejiofor’s first feature film appearance, and he delivers a strong portrayal of the interpreter James Covey.

Spielberg’s Amistad is deeply moving and disturbing as the film takes audiences through the Mende people’s harrowing journey prior to defeating their Spanish captors. Highlighting challenges such as the language barrier between the tribe members and their attorney, Amistad‘s narrative paints a fairly accurate picture of the ordeal. Amistad received four Oscar nominations, however, movie fans still haven’t given the movie the recognition it deserves. Even though the movie runs for a lengthy two-and-a-half hours, it’s still an engaging story that will leave a lasting impression on viewers.

Amistad can be streamed on Pluto TV and Paramount+.

Friday the 13th, The Devil Inside, Godzilla, and Five Nights at Freddy's

These days, movies are extremely frontloaded. Back in the ’80s and ’90s, a tentpole (or even a smaller genre film) could enjoy several weeks of big-screen success; now, whether a film is deemed a success or failure seems to be determined after its first Sunday. That’s the nature of the beast because the streaming industry has become such a giant that, more often than not, those services are what people are choosing over an expensive trip to the theater. Even still, those first three (or five, for Wednesday openers) days aren’t everything. A movie can open to dropped jaws and applause, but if it plummets from that point and never recovers, those jaws aren’t going to stay dropped. Those are the movies that follow, those that opened very well but couldn’t maintain momentum.

The only exceptions were Onward, which plummeted because of the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and stuff like The Twilight Saga: New Moon and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which had devoted fanbases that were fully expected to turn out their first few days. Also excluded was Valentine’s Day, which made more than half its total domestic gross throughout its first three days, but when those three days are February 12th through 14th, it would be baffling for there to be any other outcome.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Very few films that could open to $166 million domestically and close with $330.4 million would be considered financial disappointments. Consider Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice the exception to the unwritten rule. And fair enough, it was the first live-action movie in history to feature both of DC’s two major A-list characters. Yet horrible reviews and toxic word of mouth from general filmgoers trumps profitability.

And Batman v Superman did actually turn a profit. $874 million worldwide against a $250 million price tag, to be exact. But that $250 million doesn’t include the film’s massive marketing push. In short, it may have made money, but not nearly as much as it was expected to (or should have). It was just too dour a theatrical experience to earn repeat business the way 2012’s The Avengers did. Watchmen and X-Men Origins: Wolverine faced similar fates, but there’s no doubt the expectations were higher for Batman v Superman than they were for those two movies.

The Devil Inside

January is known as a dumping ground for good reason. It’s when studios release the projects they pretty much know are going to generate poor reviews and at best a modest return on investment. But it can be dynamite for horror films, no matter how awful the horror film is. For instance, The Devil Inside.

On the plus side, its $33.7 million opening and $53.3 million final domestic gross were amazing returns on a $1 million investment. But there’s no doubt the many who turned out opening weekend didn’t like what they saw. Nor should they have – it’s a movie that has the audacity to end by promoting a website the viewer (a.k.a. the person who shelled out cash for a ticket) can visit, as opposed to an actual conclusion to the film.

Five Nights at Freddy’s

five-nights-at-freddys-how-when-watch-on-peacock-streaming.jpg
Blumhouse’s Five Nights at Freddy’s movie.

Five Nights at Freddy’s could be considered an iffy entry here. After all, it was simultaneously released on Peacock. But the fact remains that it couldn’t even come close to doubling its $80-million opening. On average, a movie has a final domestic haul of 2.5 to three times its opening weekend gross.

When all was said and done, Five Nights at Freddy’s netted $137.3 million domestically. Was that enough to make it a massive success on a $20-million budget? Absolutely. Is the fact that it could open to $80 million while also being on a streaming service impressive? Without a doubt. But a 1.7 multiple on an opening weekend gross is miniscule.

Friday the 13th

Compared to other genres, horror is the most frontloaded. It’s expected to be frontloaded. But Marcus Nispel’s surprisingly solid 2009 Friday the 13th reboot was extremely frontloaded. Even the following year’s borderline unwatchable A Nightmare on Elm Street remake enjoyed a far better multiple on its opening weekend haul.

To put it into context, 2010’s Nightmare on Elm Street opened to about $33 million and ended its run with $63 million domestically and a further $52.6 million from overseas markets. Friday the 13th opened higher at $40.6 million, but plummeted after day three, ultimately accumulating $65 million. It didn’t even do particularly well overseas with $26.5 million. It’s unclear why the Freddy reboot nearly doubled its opening weekend domestically while Jason only netted a 1.6 multiple. Neither film was bolstered by glowing word of mouth, but without a doubt, Freddy’s was worse. In this Freddy vs. Jason, Jason should have handily won. But like in the actual Freddy vs. Jason, it was more of a tie.

Godzilla

In hindsight, it’s pretty surprising that Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla was able to kick off the Monsterverse. 1998’s Godzilla sold a comparable number of tickets to the 2014 film and was widely deemed a failure, to the point that other movies’ advertising (e.g. Small Soldiers) made fun of it. The 2014 reboot seemed to get a pass.

This could be credited to two factors. For one, Edwards’ film received far better reviews than Roland Emmerich’s. Two, it had a terrific opening of $93 million. As time has gone on, more importance has been bestowed on opening weekend figures. Even still, with a sharp 66.8% drop on weekend two and a final domestic tally of $200.7 million, Godzilla didn’t quite pull in the numbers that give birth to a cinematic universe.

Which film’s box office drop is most surprising? Let us know in the comments below!

Jurassic World Rebirth is hitting theaters this summer and bringing with it a horde of terrifying dinosaurs for its main characters to deal with. The island where most of the new film is set is apparently home to the most dangerous dinosaurs to come from the Jurassic Park projects, including chilling genetic mutations and dinosaurs that managed to survive life in the modern world. Between the T-Rex, the raptors, and whatever that mysterious monster from the trailer is, the team heading to the island will have their work cut out for them.

Unfortunately for them, even more threats await on the deserted island. The trailer itself confirmed that another dangerous (and widely beloved) dinosaur from the Jurassic Park movies is making its way back to the big screen in Jurassic World Rebirth. That dino is none other than the Spinosaurus.

If you recall, the Spinosaurus was the main dinosaur in Jurassic Park III, which was first released in theaters back in 2001. Since then, however, the massive carnivore has been absent from the film franchise. A Spinosaurus skeleton was featured in Jurassic World and Jurassic World Dominion, but the live dinosaur hasn’t been seen in the live-action franchise for nearly 25 years.

That will change with Jurassic World Rebirth, though it doesn’t appear the Spinosaurus will play any kind of major role in the story. A couple of the beasts are featured right at the end of the trailer, swimming around in the water off the coast of the island, working alongside the water-bound Mosasaurus. You’re able to tell the Spinosaur apart from anything else swimming in the water because of the massive find of spikes that rise out of its back and above the water.

This dinosaur will be one of several connections Jurassic World Rebirth is set to make to the original Jurassic Park films. Director Gareth Edwards wants to make the movie scarier than the other recent entries, more in-line with Steven Spielberg’s 1993 classic. Dr. Henry Loomis, the character played by Jonathan Bailey, also has some kind of deep connection to Alan Grant — the nature of which is being kept a mystery.

The most talked-about connection at this point is a specific scene in Jurassic World Rebirth that was cut from the first Jurassic Park. Original writer David Koepp wanted to adapt a scene from Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park novel that saw characters trying to row on a raft past a sleeping T-Rex without waking it up, but there wasn’t a good way to fit it into that first movie. Now, more than 30 years later, Koepp is back writing the newest Jurassic movie and he’s finally able to bring the tense screen to life.

Jurassic World Rebirth arrives in theaters on July 2nd.

Welcome to a new discussion with the ComicBook Panel! Make sure to post your own comments for the Super Bowl trailers down below!

Earlier this week, Super Bowl LIX aired and pitted the Kansas City Chiefs against the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans. While the game was very much in favor of the Eagles, winning 40 to 22, movie fans were the real winners of the night. Sprinkled between celebrity-centric commercials were some trailers for 2025’s biggest and most anticipated films like Smurfs, How to Train Your Dragon, M3GAN 2.0, Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning, and Lilo & Stitch.

One of the most talked about trailers comes, of course, from Marvel with their action-comedy superhero epic Thunderbolts* (yes, the asterisk is meant to be there). Taking some of the MCU’s favorite antiheroes like the Winter Soldier, Yelena, and Red Guardian and making them collaborate in order to stop the unhinged Sentry is sure to be a fun watch. While there was a lack of Taskmaster, the hype for the film, which releases on May 2nd, felt rather palpable at the Super Bowl.

Even more so, the recently released trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth, starring Black Widow‘s Scarlett Johansson, Wicked‘s Jonathan Bailey, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse‘s Mahershala Ali, left a dinosaur-sized footprint on audiences. Taking place after Dominion, a team of scientists will trek to find the three largest dinosaur species on a forbidden island. The only catch? They are very much still alive and not the friendly type, as we see throughout. Coming out on July 2nd, the film seems poised to make quite the splash in the Summer box office. And this just scratches the surface of all of the thrilling cinematic teases for the year, igniting excitement in movie fans everywhere.

What trailer stuck out the most to you during the Super Bowl? Do you have a favorite one? Any that felt a bit disappointing? Let us know in the comments!

Jurassic World Rebirth put on a horrifying display in its Super Bowl ad, taking us to an abandoned and overrun Isla Nublar. It showed us a few tanks with dinosaur specimens apparently in some kind of stasis, including a velociraptor with two heads. The sight already has fans theorizing and making connections where possible. The two-headed dinosaur could simply be a shocking sight that we never return to, but it could also be a unique attacker if it awoke and got free. Some are even wondering if it may be the creature we can hear clicking later on in the ad, and in the full-length trailer as well.

The trailer for Rebirth premiered online last week, introducing us to our new cast of characters and the mission they’re on. The Super Bowl ad is much shorter, containing the same footage edited down for time. However, it still helped draw fans’ attention to specific shots such as the dinosaurs suspended in tanks. Notably, the TV spot also retained a tense scene where Dr. Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey) and an unnamed character played by David Iacono have a whispered conversation while staring down a threat.

“Please don’t say they’re raptors,” Iacono says. Bailey replies in rising panic, saying, “They’re raptors.” This is accompanied by a shot two clawed feet stomping through a few inches of water, as if the two are being stalked.

Velociraptors have often been presented as the biggest threat in these movies, and adding in some unique mutations like this two-headed hunter would be a great way to keep it interesting. The previous two Jurassic World movies opened up many possibilities when it comes to genetic experimentation, and a monster like this seems like a logical step. We know the scientists on these islands were “designing” dinosaurs to create bigger spectacles, and there must have been some mistakes along the way.

As it is, we can see that this team will be attacked from all angles, particularly the air and sea. We’re already familiar with the setting, so adding in more dinosaurs seems like the best way to keep this installment fresh. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom implied that the earth would be overrun with dinosaurs, but Dominion scaled things back by explaining that the creatures really couldn’t survive in most climates. By the time of Rebirth, they’re essentially limited to the islands where they were cloned in the first place.

Jurassic World Rebirth hits theaters this July, but an exact date hasn’t been announced yet. Click here to see how to stream all six previous movies in the franchise at the time of this writing.

When a big movie trailer hits the web the week of the Super Bowl, that’s how you know it will be getting some airtime during the big game. Perhaps not the full two and a half minutes, but some airtime, nonetheless. After all, it costs about $8 million for just thirty seconds of ad time during Super Bowl LIX, which is a new record high. Such was the case this year with both Jurassic World Rebirth and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Though composed mostly of footage from the previously released trailer for the film, the Jurassic World Rebirth Super Bowl trailer dropped for newcomers in an exciting way, at first masking that it even WAS a new Jurassic move. Check it out for yourself below.

One of the most hotly anticipated movies of the summer, Jurassic World Rebirth is something of a soft reboot for the franchise. Its narrative takes place five years after the events of 2022’s disappointing and critically panned Jurassic World Dominion, but it promises a wholly different experience.

What is Jurassic World Rebirth About?

Scarlett Johansson in Jurassic World Rebirth

Dinosaurs got to rule the roost in Jurassic World Dominion, but as time has gone on, it’s become apparent that, were they not to have been obliterated by a meteor, they probably would have died out anyway. Like with the aliens in War of the Worlds, Earth’s environment simply isn’t hospitable to them. Instead of running through cities, ripping men off of mopeds and smacking statues down with their tails, the few remaining dinos are now relegated to remote tropical regions.

Before they’re all dead for good, a pharmaceutical representative wants to procure some of their DNA which he believes will be the key to a lifesaving (for human) drug. What he needs is a sample from the three largest remaining dinosaurs, and to accomplish this mission he brings aboard covert operative Zora Bennett, paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis, and Bennett’s team leader Duncan Kincaid. Bennet and her team, along with Krebs, venture into the tropical areas and, in the process, find more than expected. For one, they come across a shipwrecked civilian family and, two, at the original Jurassic Park’s research laboratory, they find even bigger than usual, mutated toothed monstrosities that make confrontations with Velociraptors and T. Rexes look like a walk in the park.

Who Is in the Newest Jurassic Movie?

dinosaur in jurassic world rebirth

Don’t expect Laura Dern’s Dr. Ellie Sattler, Chris Pratt’s Owen Grady, Bryce Dallas Howard’s Claire Dearing, Jeff Goldblum’s Dr. Ian Malcolm, or Sam Neill’s Dr. Alan Grant here, because Jurassic World Rebirth is loaded with franchise newcomers. The cast is fronted by MCU veteran Scarlett Johansson as Bennett, Bridgerton‘s Jonathan Bailey as Dr. Loomis (no relation to Halloween), and Luke Cage‘s (and Blade‘s?) Mahershala Ali as team leader Kincaid.

Joining them is Rupert Friend as Martin Krebs, the pharmaceutical rep who brings the mission to their attention, The Lincoln Lawyer‘s Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as Reuben Delgado, the patriarch of the shipwrecked family, and Luna Blaise, David Iacono, and Audrina Miranda as Reuben’s children. Deadpool‘s Ed Skrein has also been cast in a still-mysterious role.

Behind the camera is Rogue One: A Star Wars Story‘s Gareth Edwards, replacing The Fall Guy‘s David Leitch. Edwards certainly has experience with creature features, as his debut was with 2010’s Monsters which he followed up with the Monsterverse kick starter Godzilla. Perhaps most exciting of all is the fact that David Koepp penned the script. Koepp co-wrote the original film with the book’s author, Michael Crichton, and was the sole writer of 1997’s underrated The Lost World: Jurassic Park. He also wrote 2002’s Panic Room and Spider-Man and has performed directing/writing double duty on Stir of Echoes and Secret Window.

Jurassic World Rebirth hits theaters on July 2nd. For now, check out the trailer below.

A new chapter for the Jurassic World franchise begins this summer, and fans got their first taste of the action ahead of this year’s Super Bowl. With a TV spot set for the Big Game, Universal dropped the official trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth this past week. Director Gareth Edwards and screenwriter David Koepp have made no secret of the fact that this new Jurassic World movie is aiming to get back to the roots of what made Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park so great, and moving away from a lot of the tone and style of the recent Jurassic World trilogy.

Edwards has talked about how he wanted to make the film scary, like the 1993 classic, and Koepp aimed to keep the thrills mostly contained. Now that the trailer is out in the world, and some more information about the movie with it, we’ve learned that vibes aren’t the only thing connecting Jurassic World Rebirth to the original Jurassic Park. There are some direct connections on-screen in the new movie as well.

Perhaps the biggest and most obvious connection between the two films is their setting. Jurassic World Rebirth follows a team that is sent to an island on the equator to track down some dinosaurs and extract their DNA, in the hopes that they can aid in a once-in-a-generation medical breakthrough. That island, as the trailer explains, happens to be the very island where the initial Jurassic Park research labs were located.

So the team will be exploring all of the facilities where the dinosaurs were first made and tested before being let loose in Jurassic Park. So they’ll be running into some of the “failed experiments” that happened to survive (and get scarier over time).

It’s also worth mentioning that one of the new franchise characters has some sort of connection to one of the original stars, though we don’t know what it is just yet. Jurassic World Rebirth‘s Jonathan Bailey recently told Vanity Fair that his character, Dr. Henry Loomis, has a connection to Dr. Alan Grant, the main character of Jurassic Park.

“I’ve always wanted to make Dr. Alan Grant proud,” Bailey said. “You’ll have to wait and see to see what sort of link there is between them.”

The last major connection between the films — that we know of right now — is actually a scene that was cut from the Jurassic Park script during development. There’s a scene from Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park novel that sees Grant and the two kids trying to paddle a raft past a sleeping T-Rex without waking it. Koepp wasn’t able to fit it into the first Jurassic Park movie but always wanted to find a way to bring it to the screen. So he ended up writing a new version of the scene into Jurassic World Rebirth.

Jurassic World Rebirth hits theaters on July 2nd.

Scarlett Johansson in Lost in Translation

Scarlett Johansson has been in quite a few movies since making her debut in 1993’s Just Cause, and to her credit she has a better track record than most other current A-listers. While she has a few duds along the way like Home Alone 3, The Perfect Score (alongside fellow future Avenger Chris Evans), The Island, The Spirit, and The Black Dahlia, her films have garnered critical praise more often than not. Ten of them have even scored a 90% or above on Rotten Tomatoes. That in mind, it says a lot about her filmography that entries such as Match Point, The Prestige, Vicky Christina Barcelona, Under the Skin, and Jojo Rabbit didn’t make the cut.

What critics have deemed the best of the best range considerably when it comes to genre. There are nearly as many Marvel Cinematic Universe films as there are moving dramas. There’s even a movie where she played a giant snake. Will this year’s Jurassic World Rebirth end up on the list?

Avengers: Endgame — 94%

A record-shattering box office sensation, Avengers: Endgame was also a smash success with critics. The three-hour film kept reviewers as entertained as general audience members, with both groups referring to it as an exciting and moving highpoint for the overarching cinematic universe.

The culmination of all that came before, Avengers: Endgame finds the few remaining heroes who weren’t turned into dust going back in time to undo the slaughter that took place in Avengers: Infinity War. It’s their one chance, but even success may bring about death and pain. No one is safe, from friends turned enemies turned friends again Tony Stark and Steve Rogers to Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff.

Captain America: Civil War — 90%

Like with Joe and Anthony Russo’s other MCU adventures, Captain America: Civil War received extremely high marks from critics. The vast majority of them called it one of the universe’s best installments, with many finding themselves impressed by its ability to balance enthralling set pieces with a decidedly character-driven plotline.

Civil War shows the rift growing between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark, the latter of whom knows he goofed up bad by bringing Ultron into the world. He thinks he and his superhero team need to be held accountable for their actions, especially now that the group’s latest mission has gone awry. But Rogers disagrees, and that’s made him a criminal in the government’s eyes. And a traitor in the eyes of some of his friends. Johansson’s Black Widow has one of the more interesting parts to play in the whole interpersonal conflict, as she’s found herself on Stark’s side, but can’t quite fully turn her back on the man who she teamed up with in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier — 90%

Just like MCU fans, critics found Captain America: The Winter Soldier to be one of the cinematic universe’s very best installments. Many of them praised its emulation of classic political thrillers as well as its more restrained approach to the superhero movie formula, especially when compared to The Avengers from two years prior.

The story follows Captain America as he teams up with Johansson’s Black Widow to uncover a mysterious plot that seems to have consumed the majority of S.H.I.E.L.D. It turns out the situation is worse than the duo could have ever imagined, as the agency for which they’ve fought has actually been HYDRA the whole time, and their main weapon is Cap’s childhood friend.

Ghost World — 93%

Before Johansson was becoming an MCU legend as Natasha Romanoff, she was starring in a far different comics adaptation. Ghost World was an early showcase of Johansson’s talent. Critics loved her work, but they also heaped praise upon Thora Birch’s co-lead performance as well as the film’s unique deadpan sense of humor.

Birch stars as Enid and Johansson as Rebecca, two recent high school graduates who carry with them a wisdom of two women decades their senior. Enid takes things a step further by trying to coach a middle-aged man, Seymour (Steve Buscemi), on how to find love. The irony is, as an outcast, Enid has even less experience than the man she’s coaching. Worse yet, Enid’s quest has caused a rift between herself and Samantha, who has a hard time wrapping her head around just what her friend is doing.

Her — 95%

One of the best-reviewed movies of 2013, critics appreciated genius auteur Spike Jonze’s Her even more than his Adaptation and Being John Malkovich. Many reviewers pointed to how it could take a look at a deeply unconventional romance and simultaneously shed light on what it is that makes conventional romances flourish or fall apart. Compliments were also bestowed the work of the cast, including Johansson’s vocal-only performance.

Her tells the story of Joaquin Phoenix’s Theodore Twombly, an extremely lonely man who develops a relationship with Johansson’s Samantha, an AI operating system. OS1, as the AI is called, has been advertised not only as being the first operating system of its type, but essentially a being with consciousness. Theodore finds this to be true as the system he’s come to rely on starts to become something of a love interest, baffling the few actual humans in his life. The reality is, though, the less lonely Twombly feels because of Samantha, the more alone he truly is.

Isle of Dogs — 90%

Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs received as much critical praise as many of the director’s other revered works, including fellow stop-motion animated film Fantastic Mr. Fox. Like with that George Clooney and Meryl Streep-led film, the star-studded Isle of Dogs received high marks for its deadpan humor as well as the gorgeous visuals on display.

The cleverly named film takes place in a fictional Japanese city where people have been barred from owning dogs by the mayor due to a canine flu pandemic. All the pups have been relocated to Trash Island, which is now where the Mayor’s nephew is travelling to find his missing best friend.

The Jungle Book — 94%

Helmed by Johansson’s Iron Man 2 director Jon Favreau, the live-action version of The Jungle Book was as much a critical success as it was a commercial one. Much appreciation was bestowed not just the gorgeous visuals, but also the casting and thematic heft. Some critics even deemed it an improvement over the animated classic.

Featuring fellow MCU vets Idris Elba, Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley, Lupita Nyong’o, Giancarlo Esposito, Garry Shandling, and even Sam Raimi, The Jungle Book was certainly a star-studded affair. The narrative, of course, follows young Mowgli, a little boy raised by wolves who is run out of his home by the evil tiger Shere Khan. Mowgli teams up with a panther and a happy-go-lucky bear to survive the dangers posed by not just Shere Khan, but a smooth-talking, musically inclined gorilla and Johansson’s hissing serpent, as well.

Lost in Translation — 95%

Sofia Coppola’s masterpiece, Lost in Translation stands both as perhaps the best film of 2003 and one of the best of its respective decade. It wouldn’t be seen as such if the two lead performances weren’t note-perfect and the narrative fully involving. Critics were essentially unanimous in saying it checked both boxes.

The narrative follows Bill Murray’s Bob Harris, a past-his-prime movie star shooting a commercial in Tokyo. There, he meets Johansson’s Charlotte, a newlywed whose celebrity photographer husband doesn’t seem to make much time for her. While Bob and Charlotte are two very different people, they develop a friendship that changes both lives forever.

Marriage Story — 95%

Featuring tour de force performances by leads Johansson and Adam Driver as well as Laura Dern and the late Ray Liotta, Marriage Story easily ranks among the very best Netflix original films. Reviewers appreciated the film’s no holds barred look at a crumbling relationship as well as the work from the cast and the heartfelt direction by Noah Baumbach.

Johansson stars as actress Nicole and Driver stars as theater director Charlie. Charlie is all set up in New York, but Nicole gets a new gig which requires her to leave her husband’s theater company. Their marriage has already been on the ropes for a while, but this new development sends them on a path towards a vicious custody battle over their son.

Marvel’s The Avengers — 91%

The movie that solidified the MCU’s standing as not just a successful franchise but a bonafide money printer, The Avengers dominated the crowded 2012 summer movie season. It also did extremely well with critics, who praised the chemistry shared by the cast as well as Joss Whedon’s energetic script. Besides the first Iron Man, it was the highest-rated entry of the MCU’s first phase.

The narrative follows Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Hulk, and Thor as they team-up under the watchful eye of Nick Fury to take on Loki and his borrowed Chitauri army. Will they be able to put aside their personal differences between the egomaniac and the aliens tear apart New York?

Scarlett Johansson in Jurassic World Rebirth

The release date for Jurassic World Rebirth is just over the horizon and fans of 1993’s Jurassic Park have much to be excited for. As producer Frank Marshall told Vanity Fair in an exclusive early look at the film, he, writer David Koepp, and executive producer Steven Spielberg did all they could to make the franchise frightening again. Jurassic World Rebirth follows a team of covert operations experts tasked with procuring the DNA from the three biggest remaining dinosaurs on a heretofore unseen island that served as the original research facility for the very first attempt at making a dino theme park.

Rebirth serves as a soft reboot of the franchise, taking place five years after the conclusion of the Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard-led Jurassic World trilogy but featuring an entirely new cast of characters. Outside of some of these new characters being assuredly ill-fated, what do we know about them?

Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson)

Scarlett Johansson in Jurassic World Rebirth

Scarlett Johansson has long wanted to be a part of the Jurassic Park franchise. She grew up with the 1993 original and was such a big fan that she “slept in a Jurassic Park pup tent in my bedroom I shared with my sister for a year. Anytime the trades would report a new Jurassic movie, I would forward to my agents like ‘Hey, I’m available.'”

Marshall described Bennett as “a special operative. She was in the armed forces for the entirety of her career. She probably worked for a private contractor for some time, and now she’s working for herself.” Johansson had quite a bit of input on the shaping of Bennett as well, saying “I just wanted to understand what the stakes were for her, and that she wasn’t just driven by money or power. You wanted it to feel personal for her. You have to love the characters and you want to root for them. The movie can’t just stand on the dinosaurs alone.” She makes a good point. Typically, mercenary characters are nothing more than cannon fodder in creature features. Johansson promises Bennett is more than that, “She’s someone who’s dedicated herself to saving other people, and I think she’s at a professional crossroads. I think she’s burnt out.”

Dr. Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey)

jonathan bailey in jurassic world rebirth

While there won’t be any legacy characters popping up in Rebirth, Jonathan Bailey, who plays paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis, hinted that his character has a history with Sam Neill’s Dr. Alan Grant. Bailey felt pressure to make his character work, saying, “I’ve always wanted to make Dr. Alan Grant proud. You’ll have to wait and see to see what sort of link there is between them.”

Bailey went on about Dr. Loomis, adding he “reinforces big, cerebral, and emotional arguments about the natural world and how we as humans live our lives.” But, as the teaser trailer makes clear, he’s the least fortified to survive on a dangerous, mutated dinosaur-laden island. But his presence is a necessary one, as he’s best suited to procure the dino DNA.

Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali)

mahershala ali in jurassic world rebirth

Rebirth is going to carry over what has worked best about many of Steven Spielberg’s best classic adventures, from Raiders of the Lost Ark to Jaws. When it comes to that latter point, Jonathan Bailey has equated his character to Richard Dreyfuss’ Hooper, Johansson’s character to Roy Scheider’s Martin Brody, and Mahershali Ali’s Duncan Kincaid to Robert Shaw’s shark hunter turned shark chum Quint.

Ali appreciated the comparison, but didn’t see it that way during the shoot. His description of Bennett’s team leader? “Kincaid is a guy who at this point in his life has chosen to live off the grid. He’s in Suriname [a country in northern South America], but he’s somebody who has been a good friend of Zora’s and is always willing to help out when she needs something handled covertly. He’s a good-spirited guy, but he’s definitely been through some tragedy in his life. All in all, he’s learned to live with his wounds, and he’s making the best of the life that he has.”

Jurassic World Rebirth hits theaters on July 2nd.

Jurassic World Rebirth hits theaters on July 2nd, 2025, and in the meantime many fans will be looking to stream the previous installments. All six movies are available online, but you’ll need to track them down on a few different streaming services. If you’re just looking to catch up on the story up to this point, there are some movies you can skip, but completionists will obviously want to take this chance for a binge-watch. Whatever you’re going for, the details are available below. Read on for your guide to watching all the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies in order ahead of the premiere of Jurassic World Rebirth.

Jurassic Park (1993)

The story starts in Jurassic Park, which is streaming on Starz at the time of this writing. You also find it on PVOD stores like Apple TV and Fandango at Home, but it is notably not available to rent or purchase on Prime Video. For those that prefer physical media, the latest release is a box set including the first three movies on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, which first went on sale in 2018. At the time of this writing, it retails for $36.

Even if you’re just preparing for Rebirth, the first Jurassic Park is not one to skip. This movie sets up the whole premise and delivers some of the most important details to make sense of the sci-fi elements later on. The fine points of DNA and cloning are laid out here better than anywhere else, and you’ll want to get that exposition before going on.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)

Like the first movie, The Lost World: Jurassic Park is streaming on Starz, and is available to rent or purchase on some PVOD stores. If you’re double-checking your viewing order, this is the title most likely to throw you off. The creators didn’t necessarily plan on making a sequel, let alone an ongoing series, and at the time there was no source material. Author Michael Crichton actually wrote his novel The Lost World after the Jurassic Park film adaptation was successful. The book was then quickly turned around into this second installment.

The Lost World is generally beloved by fans, but it’s also a bit of a narrative cul de sac. The later movies have made references to it, but they were subtle and accessible to fans who were less familiar with the franchise. It’s a great movie, but if you’re looking to slim down your binge-watch, you can skip this one.

Jurassic Park III (2001)

If you’re going to skip anything on this list, Jurassic Park III should be it. The movie certainly contributes to the science and worldbuilding of the series, but overall, it’s easy to catch up on in later titles. On top of that, it’s the least popular of the original trilogy, and for some fans it’s the worst of the six. The movie gets some points for bringing Dr. Alan Grant and Dr. Ellie Sattler back together, but other than that there’s not much to miss.

Jurassic Park III is streaming on Starz and a few PVOD stores. For those on the fence, a Starz subscripion starts at $10.99 per month. You can save some money by signing up for an annual plan for $69.99 per year, but you lose the option to end the subscription any time. It’s worth noting that access to the Starz streaming app is included with many cable packages, so you may want to check your existing contract before signing up.

Jurassic World (2015)

jurassic-world-4-new-jurassic-world-movie.png

Jumping ahead to the sequel trilogy, Jurassic World sets the scene for the modern franchise where the park has been revived and the science of genetic engineering has come a long way. There is some important setup here when it comes to private and military interest in this technology and designer dinosaurs. As far as we can tell, the story will be more connected to the later movies, but this is not one to skip on a re-watch.

Jurassic World is streaming now on Prime Video, so all subscribers can watch it with ads. It’s also available on FuboTV and the FXNow app. If you want to rent or purchase the movie, you can find it on Apple TV, Fandango at Home or Google Play. As for the physical media option, a Blu-ray collection of all six films retails for $69.99, while a DVD box set starts at $54.99.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)

jurassic-world-fallen-kingdom-chris-pratt.jpg
Chris Pratt in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

Things get more difficult from here — Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom is not included on any subscription-based streamers at the time of this writing. You can rent or purchase it on PVOD stores including Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Google Play, and Prime Video. The digital copy goes for $7.99, or you can rent it for $3.79.

The ongoing story really starts to take shape here. Fallen Kingdom depicts a cataclysmic volcanic eruption on Isla Nublar, and a few humans’ efforts to rescue the dinosaurs there. After the events of all the previous films, many people want to let the dinosaurs die in the blast so that they can’t be used for any further research. While we root for the heroes to save them, we must also reckon with the consequences in later films.

Jurassic World Dominion (2022)

Finally, those that committed to the Starz subscription early on are in luck. Jurassic World Dominion is included with Starz, and on many other streamers with Starz available as an add-on. It’s also available to rent or purchase on Apple TV, Fandango at Home and Google Play.

Dominion takes the dinosaurs off of their island and into the wider world for the first time. This is essential for catching up on Jurassic World Rebirth, which builds directly on these events. There’s no telling which other elements of the story might come back into play, so keep an eye out for Easter eggs. Jurassic World Rebirth hits theaters on July 25th.

Jurassic Park is back! The last few Jurassic World movies didn’t do so great with audiences and critics, which made people think there was no way the franchise created by Steven Spielberg would ever get back on track. The epic dinosaur series is a classic, but since a new era started to continue the original ’90s trilogy, we’ve seen how much the story lost its way, especially after Dominion. Now, with Jurassic World: Rebirth set to drop in July and its trailer just out, we’ve got a pretty good idea that the story is really going back to its roots, and we can’t wait.

We’ve been waiting a long time to find out what the new movie will bring, but now we’ve got everything we need to build more expectations and theories. It’s looking like the film might finally bring one of cinema’s greatest classics back to life with some dignity, truly living up to the title Rebirth.

What to Expect from Jurassic World: Rebirth

universal pictures

For a long time, all we knew about the plot of Jurassic World: Rebirth was that it would go back to its roots and definitely be a reboot – but in a somewhat different way. What does that mean? David Koepp, the screenwriter for the first two films in the original Jurassic Park trilogy, is coming back for this one, and he made it clear that the idea was to return to the same tone as the ’90s but with different characters. After audiences saw Jurassic World take a different direction with new threats that weren’t just dinosaurs, it became obvious that the new wave of the franchise was more about spectacle and a wider narrative than the idea of being stuck in a single location. The sci-fi and horror elements were dropped in favor of something much more commercial and ambitious.

But he also said that Rebirth wouldn’t be a retcon, meaning that everything from the last three Jurassic World films is still canon. This alone is pretty interesting and makes us wonder how they’ll tie everything together in a meaningful way. The brief synopsis that was released for the film proved this, revealing that the new story is about a new team on an island trying to secure the DNA of the three largest creatures to ever exist. Along the way, they meet civilians. Now, especially with the trailer, more details have started to emerge.

Scarlett Johansson in Jurassic World Rebirth

Zora Bennet (Scarlett Johansson), Dr. Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey), and Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali) head to an island research facility from the original Jurassic Park. Five years after the events of the last film, Rebirth will show the team searching for the main “ingredient” for a medicine that could have miraculous and life-saving benefits for humanity. Halfway through, when they come across a boat expedition destroyed by aquatic dinosaurs, the entire team gets stranded on the island. The plot is intriguing and instantly a treat for Jurassic Park fans. Characters trapped with dinosaurs? It’s exactly what the audience has been asking for.

However, one thing is clear: much of the plot is mysterious from the start, and that’s because when science was first used to bring dinosaurs back to life, the idea wasn’t about entertainment. This was mentioned in the first Jurassic World, but it’s largely been unexplored since then. Now, the focus shifts back to that, and even in the trailer, we catch a fleeting glimpse of the most lethal creatures ever created. They’re not shown clearly, but just the hint of them is both terrifying and electrifying. But which dinosaur is it? And will there be new ones?

The New Dinosaurs of Jurassic World: Rebirth

Jurassic World Rebirth’s New Dinosaur

In the trailer for the new movie, you can see the characters facing off against everything from flying reptiles to giant underwater dinosaurs. However, the real climax of the scenes isn’t the action, but the intense moment when they come face-to-face with a hybrid. At first glance, it almost looks like a massive alien, but what exactly is it capable of? For now, we can only imagine. It’s no surprise that ever since Jurassic Park, there’s been talk about attempts to create creatures that ended up becoming too dangerous to be in the original park. If we thought we understood the danger of the Indominus rex, Jurassic World Rebirth is about to show us what double danger really means.

But besides that, other new species will be introduced. Some look very similar to ones we’ve seen in previous films, but this time – thanks to the context of an island full of experiments – they’ll be a bit different. In the trailer, you can spot a T-Rex with tiger stripes running along its body. The same goes for the Spinosaurus, which, when attacking the expedition boat, clearly appears to be a variant of its species. Along with these, Velociraptors, Mosasaurus, Dilophosaurus, Quetzalcoatlus, and Titanosaurus are making a return. It’s highly likely that, besides the classics, other unique types will show up too.

The thing is, many of the creatures are kept hidden in the trailer, although some familiar ones do make an appearance, and others are shrouded in suspense by not being shown completely. It’s clear that Rebirth is gearing up to put these creatures front and center, which is fantastic news. The last three Jurassic World films seemed to push the iconic dinosaurs to the side in favor of exploring other elements, but Rebirth is determined to prove that the ’90s are making a comeback with a bang. Besides, it’s exciting that all of this can now be brought to life in a more realistic way, with CGI elevating the audience’s immersion and delivering the kind of terrifying and mysterious dinosaurs we’ve been waiting to see.

The Cast & Characters of Jurassic World Rebirth

Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey in Jurassic World Rebirth

The cast of Jurassic World: Rebirth is packed with illustrious figures:

  • Jonathan Bailey as Dr. Henry Loomis – A paleontologist who joins the team to help obtain genetic material from dinosaurs.
  • Mahershala Ali as Duncan Kincaid – A member of Zora’s team who plays a crucial role in the mission.
  • Rupert Friend as Martin Krebs – A representative from a large pharmaceutical company involved in the mission.
  • Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as Reuben Delgado – The father of a family of shipwrecked civilians who joins Zora’s operation.

Other names such as Luna Blaise, David Iacono, Audrina Miranda, Philippine Velge, Bechir Sylvain, and Ed Skrein complete the cast. The only question that remains is: will Chris Pratt return as Owen Grady? Although it hasn’t been confirmed, and Rebirth is expected to pave the way for more sequels, some insight into the character may be revealed in the story. Who knows?

The new film will be executive produced by Steven Spielberg, directed by Gareth Edwards (known for films like Godzilla and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), and written by David Koepp.

Jurassic World: Rebirth hits theaters on July 2nd.

The Jurassic fandom is at an all-time high this week following the official trailer debut of the newest installment in the franchise, Jurassic World Rebirth. The latest film in the Jurassic World franchise sets up new characters, storylines, and dinosaurs for us to immerse ourselves in, marking a fresh start for the series. As the trailer states, “A New Era is Born,” and Jurassic World Rebirth will be released three years after Jurassic World Dominion, the final installment of the trilogy that reenergized the franchise after it lay dormant for over a decade. Rebirth takes place five years after Dominion, but despite the connection between the two films, the cast is entirely different. Fans have now been left wondering if franchise hero Chris Pratt will be appearing in the movie, as his character, Owen Grady, did not grace the screen in the trailer.

Jurassic World Rebirth will see none other than Scarlett Johansson take on the lead role, starring alongside Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali, all of whom are prominently featured in the Rebirth trailer with nary a sight of Chris Pratt. The simple answer is that Chris Pratt is not in Jurassic World Rebirth. However, who knows what the film has in store for us in a potential post-credit scene; however, at the moment, there has not been a mention of that either (to date only one Jurassic movie even has a post-credit scene). Pratt and co-star Bryce Dallas Howard are totally absent from the trailer for Gareth Edwards’ upcoming contribution to the franchise, and there’s been no indicator of any appearance.

jurassic-world-fallen-kingdom-chris-pratt.jpg
Chris Pratt in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

Despite the film coming off like a reboot of sorts, Jurassic World Rebirth falls in line with the other recent films in the series, but with a brand new cast. Pratt’s performance as Velociraptor trainer and animal behaviorist Owen Grady was a fan favorite of the last trilogy in the franchise. Despite any of the critiques of all the Jurassic World films, Pratt always shined in the world of each film.

In Jurassic World Rebirth, Johansson plays the role of Zora, who takes part in the discovery that there is a batch of dinosaurs who hold the key that can have life-saving benefits for the human race. The movie switches up on the idea that dinosaurs can exist just about everywhere, as it turns out that Earth is beginning to become inhabitable for them. So now, all surviving creatures must live in isolated environments that reflect Earth from 65 million years ago.

She has a proven track record of holding her own in big-budget tentpole movies. Catch her and the rest of the new cast at the release of Jurassic World Rebirth on July 2nd, 2025.

As the Jurassic Park franchise continues to expand this summer with the release of Jurassic World Rebirth, many fans will want to double back over the coming months to reexamine the franchise over its three-plus-decade run. The Jurassic Park (or Jurassic World, whatever we’re calling it) franchise has had its ups and downs over the years, but fans generally flock to it for its blockbuster feel. Still, none of the films released after the original Steven Spielberg-directed 1993 classic have broken the ground that the first installment ever did. The sequels all attract bankable stars, from those with top billing to the supporting cast, but they lack substance, scale, and overall plot compared to what Spielberg did with the first film.

Speaking of the three-time Oscar-winner, it’s hard to believe that the film’s first sequel, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, was helmed by Spielberg. A lot about it lacks his usual touch on a movie he takes on.

Spielberg has taken some responsibility for the film’s failure, but in the end, he didn’t write the script. Not that we’re pointing the finger at who did (David Koepp, the screenwriter of the original and the upcoming Rebirth film). The Lost World was criticized for its inability to live up to such a bonafide classic first film, and it has a specific moment that, to this day, has left fans wondering about a particular choice of dialogue in a pivotal scene.

This Dialogue From The Lost World Is Still Confusing Jurassic Park Fans

In the scene where the two T-Rexes attempt to throw the trailers off the cliff, Vince Vaughn’s character yells out, “Hang on to something!” Mere seconds later, Jeff Goldblum’s Ian Malcolm says the exact same thing. The confusing moment has fans to this day wondering if Goldblum flubbed up his line and meant to say, “Holding onto something!” and it got kept in the movie, or maybe he was just going by a script screwup.

See for yourself in the scene below.

It turns out that even at the time of The Lost World’s theatrical release, many other fans took notice of it. That moment in the film was later spoofed by a funny sketch for the MTV Movie Awards, which featured Ben Stiller, Janeane Garafalo, Mike Myers, and Jay Leno. Both Myers and Stiller say the same line in the sketch, as a giant Jay Leno tries to tip the trailers off of the ledge.

To this day, the moment in the film is still discussed in comments sections of video clips and within fandom Jurassic Park fandom threads. A moment of gross imperfection that is utterly perfect to rewatch.

Jurassic World Rebirth will be released in theaters on July 2nd.

The trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth has dropped, and mainstream moviegoers have certainly taken notice. Suddenly there’s renewed discussion of the entire Jurassic Park / Jurassic World series, and where Rebirth fits within that legacy. One immediate takeaway that many viewers had after watching the Jurassic World Rebirth trailer was that this seventh installment looks much darker, scarier, and more thrilling than what we’ve gotten from the franchise in its most recent installments. And that’s the best thing the franchise could be doing for itself, right about now.

It’s time for the Jurassic World franchise to take things back to the more horror-themed roots of the franchise.

Jurassic Park Was Always A Horror Story

Classic T. Rex Attack Scene in “Jurassic Park”

The original Jurassic Park novel by author Michael Crichton is unabashedly a horror-thriller with the usual Crichton science/sci-fi influences mixed in. What made the book a bestseller was largely the experience of being an edge-of-your-seat page-turner; anyone who has read the novel knows all too well (and some were critical of it) that director Steven Spielberg lightened the tone of the story and leaned into the childlike wonder of seeing dinosaurs alive alongside humans on the big screen. But even with those creative changes, Spieldberg’s 1993 Jurassic Park movie adaptation became a worldwide phenomenon because it, too, delivered the edge-of-your-seat thrill ride that audiences went to theaters in droves to experience (and then experience again).

Even Jurassic World Rebirth director Gareth Edwards has acknowledged that the original Jurassic Park had a horror-movie edge that was lost in later sequels:

Jurassic Park is a horror film in the witness protection program,” Edwards told Vanity Fair. “Most people don’t think of it like that. We all went to see it as kids. But I was scared shitless, to be honest, when I was at the cinema watching the T. rex attack. It’s one of the most well-directed scenes in cinema history, so the bar’s really high to come on board and try and do this.”

Longtime Jurassic World franchise producer Frank Marshall teased that Jurassic World Rebirth‘s story premise – an extraction team sent to retrieve genetic material from the original Jurassic Park testing lab on a remote island – isn’t just a narrative soft-reboot, but an opportunity to reboot the genre influence on the films:

“You’re in a new place, you don’t know what’s around the corner. You’ve got a different jungle, you’ve got more water, you’ve got higher cliffs,” Marshall said. “There’s a little bit of everything that’s scary.”

Scene from “Jurassic World Rebirth”

“These are the dinosaurs that didn’t work. There’s some mutations in there,” Marshall added. “They’re all based on real dinosaur research, but they look a little different.”

Jurassic World Rebirth Will Tap Into Primal Fear

Gareth Edwards summed-up his directorial approach to Rebirth by explaining the core themes that will create the horror and thrills of the film: “There’s something very primal that’s buried deep inside everybody. As mammals, we evolved [with] this fear of the bigger animal that’s going to come one day and maybe kill us or our family. The second we see it happening onscreen, you’re like, ‘I knew it…. We had it too good for too long.’”

While every Jurassic Park and/or World film has obviously offered the threat of wild dinos chomping on humans, it’s undeniable that the sequels never really got out from under the self-awareness of the first film’s success to really achieve any sort of pure genre enjoyment – and the box office achievements of the original Jurassic Park made sure that the studio (Universal Pictures) always made sure the films were family-friendly (enough), thereafter. Hence, no sequence in the series has ever had the terrifying impact of Spielberg’s original T. Rex attack on the tour caravan – no bigger jump scares than the raptor breaking through the wall to attack Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) or nearly mauling our Alan Grant in the kitchen. Jurassic World Rebirth is looking to change all that. As Mahershala Ali ominously teases: “There’s no draft of the film where everyone survives.”

Jurassic World Rebirth has a release date of July 2nd.

There were a lot of Jurassic fans hoping that the first trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth would keep its new, monstrous dinosaurs a secret, allowing for them to be a bigger surprise when the film arrives in theaters this summer. That didn’t exactly happen, though the trailer did keep shots of its biggest, baddest dino infrequent and vague. What the trailer did show us of this new beast is enough to confirm that it is a creature unlike the Jurassic franchise has seen to this point, and it might be the most terrifying creature the series has ever seen.

Jurassic World Rebirth is mostly set on the island where the original Jurassic Park research lab was located, and that’s where the film’s lead characters have to track down DNA samples that could help save humanity. That facility, according to the trailer, houses some dinosaur creations that didn’t come out quite the way they were supposed to. These alternate dinosaurs were ultimately deemed too dangerous for the park itself.

One of those dinosaurs looks more like an alien or a monster from some kind of fantasy universe. It’s got more in common with a Xenomorph than a T-Rex, at least from what we’ve seen so far. Take a look!

This is one of just two shots from the Jurassic World Rebirth trailer that show off this chilling new creature. The other shows it towering over a scientist in some sort of containment chamber.

This unnamed dinosaur is not only enormous, but it has features that we haven’t seen from many other dinosaurs in Jurassic World before. It stands as tall as the T-Rex, but has front arms/legs that actually reach down to the ground. It’s almost as if there are elements of a gorilla to the beast, which also make it feel just a tad more human than its Jurassic predecessors.

[RELATED: Jurassic World Rebirth Bringing Back a Classic Scene From Jurassic Park]

According to producer Frank Marshall, these new creations are all based in reality, but they have some mutations from what they were originally intended to be, which is what made them too terrifying for the original park in the first place.

“These are the dinosaurs that didn’t work. There’s some mutations in there,” Marshall told Vanity Fair. “They’re all based on real dinosaur research, but they look a little different.”

Director Gareth Edwards, who is no stranger to massive movie monsters, took influence from Xenomorphs, the Rancor from Star Wars, and previous Jurassic Park dinosaurs when working on these new beasts.

“Some Rancor went in there, some H.R. Giger went in there, a little T. rex went in there…” Edwards explained.

We probably won’t see a full, clear view of this dinosaur until Rebirth arrives, but we’re already dreading what terror it’s ready to cause.

Jurassic World Rebirth is set to hit theaters on July 2nd.

Three years after the conclusion of the previous Jurassic World trilogy, and 32 years after Steven Spielberg changed blockbusters with Jurassic Park, audiences are once again preparing for dinosaur adventures on the big screen. Jurassic World Rebirth hits theaters this July, with Godzilla and Rogue One director Gareth Edwards at the helm, hoping to bring the franchise back to its terrifying roots.

The film isn’t going to be released until July 2nd, but fans got their first look at the action on Wednesday morning. A few days ahead of the Super Bowl, where Universal is expected to air a short ad for Jurassic World Rebirth, the film’s first full trailer debuted online. You can check it out in the video at the top of the page!

Jurassic World Rebirth takes place after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, on a version of Earth that has been filled with dinosaurs. In the years between the films, most dinosaurs have retreated to some islands near the equator, where the climate is still hospitable for them. A team is sent in to take some DNA from the dinos, in order to help create a potential cure for human heart disease.

Jurassic World: Rebirth brings original Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp back to the franchise with a brand new screenplay. Marshall, who shepherded Steven Spielberg’s iconic 1993 blockbuster is also back as a producer. The film stars Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, Mahershala Ali, Rupert Friend, Ed Skrein, and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo. You can check out Universal’s synopsis for the new Jurassic World below.

Academy Award nominee Johansson plays skilled covert operations expert Zora Bennett, contracted to lead a skilled team on a top-secret mission tosecure genetic material from the world’s three most massive dinosaurs.

Jurassic World Rebirth may share its name with the recent trilogy of dinosaur films spearheaded by Colin Trevorrow, but the DNA of this new adventure appears to be firmly rooted in the Steven Spielberg blockbuster that kicked off the franchise back in 1993. Original Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp returned to pen the script for Rebirth, while director Gareth Edwards has taken every opportunity to talk about bringing the Jurassic franchise back to where it began.

The ties to the original go even deeper than you might think, though, as Jurassic World Rebirth contains a sequence from Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park novel that Koepp and Spielberg originally wanted to put in the first movie. They couldn’t find a good place for it and had to abandon it, but Koepp took this opportunity with Rebirth to finally bring it to life.

Koepp mentioned the scene in an interview with Variety last month, but he didn’t reveal which scene it was. This week, as part of Vanity Fair‘s big preview piece for Jurassic World Rebirth, producer Frank Marshall confirmed that the scene in question is one that featured Dr. Alan Grant and the kids on a raft in a lagoon, trying to get across the water without disturbing a sleeping T-rex. They eventually fail to keep the dozing dino asleep, and all hell breaks loose as they try to escape.

“The tyrannosaur was now chest-deep in the water, but it could hold its big head high above the surface,” reads an excerpt from Crichton’s Jurassic Park novel. “Then Grant realized the animal wasn’t swimming, it was walking, because moments later only the very top of the head—the eyes and nostrils—protruded above the surface. By then it looked like a crocodile, and it swam like a crocodile, swinging its big tail back and forth, so the water churned behind it.”

In addition to the lagoon scene, there are two other key pieces of connective tissue between Jurassic Park and Jurassic World Rebirth. First and foremost, the new movie sends its characters to the island where the original Jurassic Park lab was located, as they try to hunt down dinosaur DNA that could help save humanity.

There’s also the matter of Dr. Henry Loomis, the paleontologist played by Jonathan Bailey. While speaking to Vanity Fair, Bailey explained that his character has a connection to Sam Neill’s Alan Grant, though the specifics of that link are being kept secret.

“I’ve always wanted to make Dr. Alan Grant proud,” Bailey said. “You’ll have to wait and see to see what sort of link there is between them.”

We do know, at least, that Loomis isn’t some grown up version of John Hammond’s grandson, Tim, who idolized Dr. Grant when he was a child. It has been confirmed that the two Hammond grandchildren, who were key characters in Jurassic Park, will not be involved in the new movie.

Jurassic World Rebirth is set to hit theaters on July 2nd.

Jurassic World Rebirth Is Going to Get Dangerous & Scary

“I’ve always said that visual effects are great, CGI is a great tool, but it makes you lazy because you know you can do anything,” Jurassic World Rebirth producer Frank Marshall told Vanity Fair, adding that to make the seventh film in the Jurassic Park / Jurassic World franchise relevant, “It’s got to be dangerous.”

Scarlett Johansson in “Jurassic World Rebirth”

“You’re in a new place, you don’t know what’s around the corner. You’ve got a different jungle, you’ve got more water, you’ve got higher cliffs,” Marshall continued. “There’s a little bit of everything that’s scary.”

Jonathan Bailey in “Jurassic World Rebirth”

The feature article reveals that the story of Jurassic World Rebirth will put Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey at the center of the story, playing a recovery team who is sent to a secret location from the franchise’s past: the first research lab where the prototype dinosaurs were first created. However, while the squad tries to secure a genetic prize that could benefit humanity, they find that those failed dino experiments didn’t quite abandon the abandoned facility or die off: they’re very much alive, thriving, and probably hungry for a good human snack.

“These are the dinosaurs that didn’t work. There’s some mutations in there,” Marshall revealed. “They’re all based on real dinosaur research, but they look a little different.”

Mahershala Ali in “Jurassic World Rebirth”

Jurassic Park is a horror film in the witness protection program,” Gareth Edwards added. “Most people don’t think of it like that. We all went to see it as kids. Jurassic World Rebirth has a theatrical release date of July 2nd.

Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey in Jurassic World Rebirth

As fans await the premiere of the Jurassic World Rebirth trailer, they’re expressing hope that it does one thing in particular: hide the dinosaurs. It’s been confirmed that the first preview for Jurassic World Rebirth debuts on Wednesday, February 5th, giving audiences a taste of what director Gareth Edwards has cooked up. To generate hype for the trailer’s release, Universal recently unveiled some first footage, showing Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey’s characters encountering a dinosaur in tall grass. Setting an eerie tone for the scene, only the dinosaur’s tail is visible. If moviegoers have their way, the full trailer will follow suit by not putting the dinos front and center.

In a thread on the r/JurassicPark subreddit, commenters discussed their excitement for the trailer, with some sharing their hopes for what the preview shows. “I actually hope they don’t show any dino faces or anything,” one user wrote. “Just tease them. Focus on the mystery and plot and characters more so.” Others agreed with that sentiment, though were doubtful it would actually happen. “[S]tudios want to show off their goods and I fully expect almost everything to be shown,” someone said.

Scheduled to hit theaters this July, Jurassic World Rebirth stars Johansson as Zora Bennett, a covert ops specialist who teams up with paleontologist Henry Loomis (Bailey) on a mission to secure dinosaur DNA that can be used in the development of a life-saving drug. The cast also features Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali, Rupert Friend, and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo.

The Jurassic World Rebirth trailer premiere is just one part of Universal’s plans for a marketing blitz this week. It’s been reported that Rebirth will be one of the 2025 tentpoles receiving a Super Bowl spot this year. Previously, the studio’s promotional efforts had been relegated to sharing still images of the human cast in action.

Hiding the dinosaurs in the trailer would be an interesting strategy. Despite receiving mixed reviews, all three installments of the Jurassic World trilogy grossed over $1 billion worldwide. This is one of Hollywood’s most recognizable properties, and it seems like a safe bet Jurassic World Rebirth will be a sizable draw when it opens this summer. From that perspective, there isn’t a need to lean on the dinosaurs as a crutch in an effort to attract audiences. Showing a little restraint in the trailer could go a long way in building even more excitement for the film. Plus, it would mimic Steven Spielberg’s approach on the original Jurassic Park; in that film, he held off showing the dinosaurs in all their glory for as long as possible so that it was more impactful when audiences finally saw them.

Of course, since Edwards has teased Jurassic World Rebirth showcases an “embarrassment of riches” of dinosaur action, it wouldn’t be a shock if marketing tapped into that by making a key set piece or two a centerpiece of the promotional campaign. That said, there was a previous Edwards-directed blockbuster that employed a “less is more” marketing strategy. The trailers for 2014’s Godzilla only offered glimpses of the titular creature, finding other ways to demonstrate Edwards’ keen eye for visuals and scale. Regardless of how much the dinosaurs are shown, hopefully the Jurassic World Rebirth trailer makes a great first impression.

Jurassic World is returning to the big screen this summer, and fans of the dinosaur franchise are going to be seeing the trailer for the new film even sooner than we all expected. It has been widely reported that Universal would be showing a spot for Jurassic World: Rebirth during the Super Bowl on Sunday, February 9th, and many thought that would be the day the trailer actually debuted. As it turns out, Universal is releasing the trailer online a few days before the big game.

On Monday morning, the Jurassic World social media accounts posted a 10-second video that shows footage of stars Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey in the upcoming Rebirth. The short teaser also reveals that the full trailer for Jurassic World: Rebirth will be released on Wednesday. Take a look!

Rebirth marks a new era for the Jurassic franchise, as it moves away from the story that was spearheaded by Colin Trevorrow across the previous three films. While it takes place in the same world, a few years after Jurassic World: Dominion, Rebirth follows a new group of characters and tells a totally different tale.

This time around, Gareth Edwards takes over as director, following his success with franchise films like Godzilla and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
